Among The Unknown | Exploring The Abandoned SCI Cresson Prison & Tuberculosis Hospital Episode 44
Before converted into a prison in the 1980s, this facility used to be a state hospital, which opened in 1916 and closed in 1964.
The land that it was built on, was donated by Andrew Carnegie.
The facility was used at first as a treatment center for tuberculosis patients as the mountain air was supposedly good for treatment.
The facility re-opened in 1987 as a State Correctional Institution and operated until 2013.
The institution was a medium-security, all male correctional facility.
Before closing in 2013, it is documented that 3 suicides occurred with 17 attempted.
One of the inmate's family, who died by hanging on June 16, 2012, filed a suit against the prison due to the violations that the SCI provided prisoners with inadequate mental health care, failed to protect them from harm, and placed them in isolation for long periods of time.
Another inmate, who was in solitary confinement, had written a letter to his father saying that five correctional officers had assaulted him, then filed false charges against him.
A prisoner in a neighboring cell recalls seeing guards kicking the inmate's cell door, calling him names and telling him to kill himself.
Another inmate, who reportedly asked repeatedly for and was denied mental health treatment, committed suicide inside the SCI.
In 2016, the SCI was bought for $600,000 by the highest bidder. He bought 328 acres of the former prison site as an investment.
In 2018, he appealed the county’s tax assessment of the property and in 2019, it was approved.
He argued in his appeal that demolishing the existing buildings on the site would come at a cost exceeding the property value.
With the approval, this puts the property’s assessed value at $300,000 and its market value at $1.39 million.
UPDATE: This facility is now turning into a hydroponic facility.

Among The Unknown | The Abandoned Trolley Graveyard Episode 43 (Season 8 Premiere)
A collection of trolley cars in the woods represent one man's attempt to preserve transportation history.
In 1992, Ed Metka, a retiree with a passion for streetcars, bought 14 retired green Line trolley (or streetcars) from the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority for $500 to $1000 apiece. The cars were trucked by flatbed from Boston to his railcar repair shop.
His collection of mostly ’30s and ’40s-era cars ran in Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Boston, Dallas, Minneapolis, Cleveland and Johnstown.
His passion for the history and tourism potential of streetcars dates to his time in Chicago.
“I was 6 years old when my mother would take me on the streetcar,” said Mr. Metka, 77 (2015).
“I stood like a co-pilot next to the motorman to watch him work the
controls.”
In the 1980s, Metka learned Philadelphia was selling surplus transit equipment. He soon owned 10 streetcars and rented an abandoned railroad spur to store them near his home, then in Thurmont, Md.
An acquaintance in Johnstown recommended he check out Windber, PA.
Metka found an empty former plant and rail yard.
“I said, ‘OK, I’m going to move to Windber and continue to acquire these’ ” in retirement, Metka said.
He then established the Vintage Electric Streetcar Co.
Founded in 1986, the Vintage Electric Streetcar Company began salvaging old trolleys with the eventual goal of restoration and reuse as tourist attractions and public transportation.
It was said that Metka wanted to have a museum for his collection of trolleys.
It is also said that Ed Metka occasionally give tours of the site, for which, as of August 2017, there's been multiple reports that people are not getting responses from this email address.
There are also some rumors that suggest that he may have passed away due to old age.
Today, there are about 46 or 47 streetcars, trolleys, and train cars on the property.

Among The Unknown | The Abandoned Shenango China Factory Episode 41
Shenango China, incorporated in 1901 initially employed 150 people.
In January 1905, Shenango China declared bankruptcy but was reorganized as Shenango Pottery in 1909.
By this time, 400 people were employed.
Shenango purchased New Castle Pottery Company in 1912. By March 1913, all equipment was moved into the facility.
A large flood in March led a delay in the opening of Shenango Pottery’s new factory until May.
After World War II, there was a high demand for dinnerware. A 150,000 square-feet expansion for decoration and 60,000 square-feet expansion for a new tunnel kiln was initiated in 1945, and completed in 1947.
Shenango Pottery was renamed to Shenango China in 1954.
Shenango acquired Wallace China, to be operated as a subsidiary, in March 1959 and Mayer China in 1964.
In 1968, The company was sold for $5.4 million to Inerpace Corporation.
Shenango announced a five-year modernization and expansion project beginning in 1973 to keep up with demand.
Sales in 1972 were the highest in company history.
Boasting that it was the largest employer in the area, Interpace announced in 1973 that it would expand Shenango in 2 phases.
One in 1974, and another in 1978.
In 1979, Interpace sold Shenango to Anchor Hocking
but in 1987, Anchor Hocking sold Shenango to Newell Company of Freeport, Illinois and then was sold to Canadian Pacific within six months.
The company then closed Shenango China and reorganized,
then was sold to the Pfaltzgraff Company of York, Pennsylvania in 1989.
Consolidation in plants and a decline in the economy led to the permanent closure of the Shenango China factory in December 1991.
In 2011, an arson fire occurred at the factory by individuals who were trying to burn plastic coatings off of wire in attempted copper theft.
Another fire occurred in 2012.

The HAUNTED Green Man's Tunnel At 3 AM (Halloween Special) (Pittsburgh, PA)
The Green Man’s tunnel in South Park Township, PA was built in 1924 as the Piney Fork Tunnel to service coal mines along the Pennsylvania Railroad’s Peters Creek Branch and has been Abandoned since 1962.
The man with apparently eerily-glowing green skin was said to wander the roads at night. He was said to be actually friendly. His name was Raymond Robinson aka The Green Man.
Ray was born in October 1910 and died in 1985.
There are many stories that have been past down from generation to generation about the story of the Green Man and the electrical incident.
One story says that he was with some friends on Morado Bridge near 4th street when they spied a bird’s nest high in the girders carrying the overhead wires.
Ray was dared to climb up to it and he did. When he reached the top, he made contact with the wire carrying 22,000 volts of electricity. The force of the jolt threw him down to the bridge with severe burns on his face and body.Doctors at Providence Hospital didn’t expect him to live, but by some miracle, he did.
A boy less than a year earlier, was killed by the wires.
Because of this innocent, Ray's left arm was amputated at the elbow and his body riddled with scar damage. He lost his nose and eyes, and his mouth was bloated and twisted.
Another story on which people actually think that the tunnel is haunted, is that some say that Ray was an electrical worker who was in an accident that melted his face and killed him. His green apparition has been said to have been seen late at night at the tunnel.
Robinson's story has been passed on so many times that his name and his real history have been overshadowed by the ghost story that grew out of them.
Ray lived with his mother and chose to take his walks in the late hours of the night along State Route 351 between Koppel and New Galilee with one foot on the pavement, the other on the gravel. It is said that he used a walking stick to help him feel his way through the darkness after the incident.
In the 1960s, local tourists would drive along his road in hopes of meeting him during his night walks, creating popularity towards him.
It is said that he would pose for pictures, often in exchange for beer or cigarettes.
By the 1980s, Ray ventured out for his walks less and less. Ray then moved into the Beaver County Geriatric Center (now called Friendship Ridge Nursing Nome) in Beaver, Pennsylvania.
It was there where Ray passed away on June 11, 1985, at the age of 74. He was buried back in Beaver Falls at Grandview Cemetery, just a short distance from the location of the bridge where the incident happened.
Robert Littell, the Beaver Falls boy who was fatally burned on the bridge nine months before Robinson, is also buried there.
