“Fortune favours the brave” ~Publius Terence What is bravery these days? I just saw an incredible act of bravery. On FB. Yep you read correctly. A man in a dads group I’m in shared that yesterday he had almost committed suicide. That his wife found and stopped him at the last minute. It was that brief. He didn’t play victim. He didn’t tell a story of why. He just chose to give this small post to other men. His motivation was simple. To share himself honestly so that another man might not go that route. That a man who doesn’t have a wife and might not have that person, might feel connected and not alone. Even for a moment that man might realise that the feelings will pass. And that he is stronger and more resilient than he believes. If your feeling alone. Hopeless. Confused AF. Angry. Reach out. Ask for help. Ask questions. Your not alone.

Are you feeling anxious? Does anxiety take up residence inside you? Does it at times; own you? In my past I can say yes to all 3. Even now the FEELING of anxiety is present. Anxiety is a very real set of symptoms (agitation, restlessness, worry, doubt, fear etc etc etc) and it can be a horrible place when it just won’t leave. I know a simple way to see it. Explore it. Understand it. It is simple. But sadly for humans it requires effort and some dedication. That statement will have most scroll past. See we have entered a bizarre stage of our evolution where we choose to medicate over effort. We choose to IGNORE a proven method if it requires us to do something we don’t like. We desire and search for quick fixes and easy. Anxiety doesn’t like challenge. Anxiety despises change. It wants you on edge. It wants you thinking and doubting and worrying. That’s what the beast feeds off. You can choose to stop feeding it. Again I will say it very clearly. My perspective and advice here is proven within me. It works for me. I won’t argue or get into a victim battle with anyone on this. This method or tool REQUIRES EFFORT and for results it REQUIRES DEDICATION. If you truly and sincerely want to arrest anxiety and start unravelling it’s hold, then take a listen. This is the start point. There’s more to learn. But in this; is a step. A step to understanding the beast and dealing with it. Don’t be afraid. Don’t doubt. Don’t be embarrassed. Ask questions.

It doesn’t. You can’t look at a person and see it on their face. BUT you will see it in their behaviour. As humans we were gifted with the ability to feel. Yep men it’s a gift whether you like it or not 😂 When we hide or ignore how we feel, we behave in ways that just aren’t who we really are. To look at me in these 2 pics, would be to see pure joy and happiness. Underneath I sometimes hide sadness, grief and at times anger. When I left Zimbabwean prison and was forcibly deported, lost my 2 little humans. They’re still there. I fight daily to fix this. That fight means every day I have big feelings that must be felt. They must be allowed, or I hide them. This can make me quiet, withdrawn and more likely to be short tempered or just ugly to be around. The reality for me, is I have to wake up daily and work at releasing and feeling what I have on my plate. If I don’t. Those around me suffer. If I can overcome these feelings, then I can teach you. I can very simply show you techniques that will bring you back to calm and allow you to be a better version of yourself. I will teach you to respond to life and it’s challenges, instead of reacting. To respond is to pause. Be calm. Be calculated. Use empathy. Use kindness. Act with strategy and purpose. Use discipline with love. To react can be impulsive. Withdrawn or shut down. Be short tempered. To not think. To allow hidden emotions to fly out. To hurt. To regret. To feel guilt. To then hide even further (using anything we can find). These behaviours are not just about outbursts and anger. They can be just as bad (or worse) when you disconnect or shut down. When your so scared of the feelings and thoughts, you force them down even deeper. This is especially true of men, who’s fathers just didn’t know how to equip them with the tools to feel. Nobodies fault. We don’t focus on the problem, we deal with the symptom in coaching. But now you change this. There is no failure until we do not try. Learning to feel this stuff is easy. It helps you let go of the junk from the past. It helps heal if you need it. Most importantly it stops this crap from being passed down. As parents we owe it to them to try our best. Always. We won’t always win but like I said….. The only failure is when we don’t try. Ask me questions. It’s free. My job in this life is to share my experience and hopefully help you to be a better you. They came early for me. 0600. When I look back, I realise they had been on me for a while. Chief Intelligence Org. The police and Zimbabwe immigration. The late night empty calls and the gut feelings I had been ignoring; are in hindsight something I could have paid more attention to. I could have tried to escape what happened next. I didn’t. Just to arrest and detain me cost more than they would have had in their govt coffers. The people who had set me up would have paid for fuel. For the officers to be working that early. And for those officers to have been of such high rank. Sounds dramatic and like something out of a film. It didn’t play out like this in my head at the time I can promise you. Right now the cortisol is coursing through my body and I can taste the fear again. I can feel the initial blows and anger as they tried to break me and get me to leave the country. So why this live? Fear. Doubt. Worry. Anger. Sadness. Grief. Lies. Expectation. Resentment. Feelings we ALL carry. Every single one us. The story may sound big and unreal. This isn’t even close to sharing the feelings as it played out. But I can promise that the tools I used to thrive through this and fight until the very end are real. My experience are real. My ability to teach you how to overcome any and all of your challenges is real. My ability to motivate and inspire you comes from my life. That’s what a life coach is and does. Uses life experience to guide and support you through your limitations and challenges by proven method and action. Not with books, scripts and certificates. So what motivated this today? I just got sent videos of my daughter running her first long distance. I didn’t even know she was running it today. I’ve missed my sons first day of school. Multiple birthdays and Christmas etc. I last held them on Jan 4 2020, after I jumped the border to get back and try explain and say goodbye. The don’t know I went to jail (twice). They know I was with them one second and here the next. I thought they were following me here. I got it wrong. So when I share with you about overcoming your challenges. Using a gratitude mindset and how easy and simple it is to rewrite the mental patterns that keep you stuck. I’m not citing a book. Or a course. I’m citing my life and the tools I personally use and we’re tested in pretty harsh situations. Remember the story may feel big but the reality is the feelings are the same whether your going through a divorce or your business is failing. I’m not super human. I’m no different to you. You are not a victim. You are capable of more than you could ever realise. My story is big but the feelings we all share, are the same. If I got through and thrive then it could be easier for you, right? I can promise you it is, but you need to take action. Get up off your rear end and move. Start by asking questions. It costs nothing and that 1 answer could be the turning point for change.

This is a sobering reality for me. I’m reminded daily that it won’t matter what I show on the outside, these little humans can clearly see (AND WILL FOLLOW) what’s also happening on the inside too. I know it isn't easy to accept that what we hide and numb is being absorbed by them. When I first understood this, it was the most gut wrenching realisation of my life. BUT then I did what had to be done. This created freedom from all that hidden junk, which in turn stopped the cycle being passed on. Our amazing little people have a BS meter that is second to none. They live in a world of feelings, and trust me they feel ALL of what's playing out inside you. See, if we don’t deal with our junk, we pass it on. This is a cycle that is easily stopped if you just own YOUR truth and ask for help. Our children will follow our instructions whilst young, but once their minds develop they will start to call us out. Trigger us more and more and more. That’s them calling out the hypocrite in us. I know this isn’t comfortable to read. For me it hits hard, but it motivates me as well. It’s a driving factor in my daily life that I do my best to explore and understand who I truly am. Not the outer version the world sees, but the inner version. My thoughts and feelings that I was taught not to show as a child. I refuse to repeat the cycle. I refuse to give in when it gets challenging or I’m in unchartered territory. That’s when I ask more, listen more and find my humility. Why humility? It allows me to be honest with myself and bare the truth so I can change it. If you deny it, hide it or pretend it doesn’t exist, They still see it, they still feel it; and they will still follow it. Don’t ever let fear of embarrassment or pride get in the way of asking questions. It costs nothing and a simple answer could change everything.

Some simple tools to help you be a better dad. I see a ton of info bouncing around on being a better parent. Much of it has a sh!t load of detail and info. It’s complicated and out of reach or understanding to the every day man and woman. I’ve got a few tips that are simple, easy and take little effort to use daily. Doing them daily will reignite, or reinforce this simple yet very important connection with our children. We aren’t just here to feed, clothe and school them. We are their guides to handling thoughts, feelings and the world around them. How we navigate that, is likely how they will to. I don’t want clones of me out there. I want to bring my children up to strive and thrive way beyond anything I could have ever achieved. I do that by clearing up my own junk but in lieu of that mission; these tools help them to know my presence in a way that encourages confidence and growth. Simply.
