George Floyd Had Nothing to Do With the 2020 Uprisings
If you'd like to support the creation of more work like this, you can subscribe to Weird Catastrophe here: https://weirdcatastrophe.substack.com/
This episode of Weird Catastrophe is an examination of the 2020 uprisings and a rebuttal, of a kind, to the documentary "The Fall of Minneapolis." The particular details of any case such as George Floyd's are largely, unfortunately, immaterial to the response such cases provoke in the society at large. A healthy society would be able to deal with single instances of injustice such as these on their own terms. We do not have a healthy society. These uprisings happen because there is a permanent underclass in our nation, the social contract has been broken, and the power our state exercises over us is illegitimate. You cannot expect an unjust system such as ours to deliver justice, neither for a killer cop nor for the person he killed. Our criminal justice system is too perverted to ever deliver anything resembling justice with any kind of consistency. When it comes to the rule of law and our faith in it, consistency is key. In America, there is no such thing. It doesn’t take a saint to cause the explosion, just an inexorable accretion of deep indignities and the right person in the wrong place at the wrong time. And that person could be you. We are, all of us, dancing on kindling. You don't fix that danger by arguing against matches. You clean up the kindling.
Thank you for watching.

The United States, through its powerful propaganda machine and its cruel, coercive economic system, churns out generation after generation of fresh canon fodder. The American Political System Is Broken
There is a deep nihilism in America today. Nihilism is not a kind of mopey depression or cynicism or edgy lifestyle. Nihilism is an ultimate separation between what our values are and the means by which we can assert and affirm those values. When no value can be truly honored or protected in either the political or the private life, and when our political and private lives converge and subsume one another so that neither can remain sacred, then everything ceases to have meaning. A person can have a pretty damn good hedonistic time in a nihilistic world. But it means nothing. Right behind the hedonist's back is an insatiable darkness that is being nourished by precisely the same thing that is drip-feeding them pleasure. That darkness can be deadly. This deep nihilism has infected America’s political system, stem to stern. This episode is an examination of that broken political system and how we may alter its course.

In Memory of Russell Banks, Great American Novelist
The novelist Russell Banks, who died recently at the age of 82, made a life out of bearing witness to the forgotten, and of recording memory for the sake of survival itself. Author of "Cloudsplitter," "The Sweet Hereafter," "Continental Drift," and many other works, Banks has left an enduring literary legacy. This is an appreciation of his work.

Pelosi Is Running Again, Challenger Shahid Buttar Has Something To Say About It - Weird Catastrophe
"We’re working to end her dynasty," says the left-wing Democratic challenger.
Buttar is running against Nancy Pelosi this year for her seat in the House of Representatives and to represent San Francisco. In the 2020 general election, his campaign received around 81,000 votes, which is more votes than any challenger of Pelosi has ever received since she’s been in office.
Buttar is making the case that Pelosi has been a corporate Democrat, she helped facilitate Trump’s and Obama’s worst actions as presidents, and that, given the existential threat of the impending climate catastrophe and the current pandemic, Pelosi must be defeated in November.

"Democratic Party Needs To Be Burned To The Ground," Shahid Buttar Challenges Speaker Nancy Pelosi
This is the full interview that I conducted with congressional candidate, civil rights activist, and constitutional lawyer Shahid Buttar.
I think the interview is interesting for anyone who wants to gain some insight into the problems with Nancy Pelosi’s policies, her leadership of the Democratic Party in the House, and why, as Shahid Buttar puts it, corporate corruption “continues to race our species off a climate cliff and into an authoritarian abyss.”

American Terrorism, Part 1: "We Must Not Look the Fool" - Weird Catastrophe with Kody Cava
Using fear tactics and terroristic strategies is old hat for the United States. But the term "terrorist" is never to be used to describe the state. "Terrorist" is reserved only to be used by the elites against those they view as their enemies. State-sponsored terror is not terror, by definition, because the state only engages in righteous acts of violence that aim, not to perpetuate and expand its government’s and upper class’ interests, but to "protect our freedoms" against those who hate us.

Something Is Rotten With Our Food Banks - Weird Catastrophe with Kody Cava
The open letter to our food banks that got me and my coworker fired.
You can read the full letter here: https://weirdcatastrophe.substack.com/p/something-is-rotten-with-our-food?r=7g0w8&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web
A main point that I make in the letter is that food bank workers, and all workers in general, have a responsibility in their capacity and position as food bank workers to speak up and be explicit about the root causes of hunger. If they don't do that, then they are playing into the systems that cause hunger in the first place. That responsibility that we have lies not in our positions as private citizens, but primarily in our positions of work where we can affect change and where we most directly serve our community. Getting people to recognize our collective responsibility to our communities and acting on that responsibility in our workplaces is essential to maintaining an effectual movement and asserting democratic control of our workplaces.
If you find something of value in the letter, please share far and wide with any anti-hunger workers who you think need to hear the message.
