An NHS-branded bus is travelling the country to help raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of cancer and to encourage people to contact their GP practice if they notice something in their body that doesn’t feel right, because finding cancer early makes it more treatable and can save lives.
Kicking off its tour, the bus will head to its first stop in Grimsby on Monday 27th November, before moving on to Coventry, Nottingham, and Basildon and will complete its route in Portsmouth on Friday 1st December.
On Monday 27th November 2023, the bus will be at ASDA East March, Grimsby where local NHS staff, charity workers and cancer survivors will be talking to people about common cancer symptoms and encouraging them to act on changes in their body that are unusual for them.
Also in attendance will Cancer Research UK GP, Dr Dan Cottingham, and local cancer survivor Liz, who has had a personal experience with cancer and will be supporting the engagement team to raise awareness. The tour is part of NHS England’s ‘Help Us, Help You’ campaign to help drive earlier cancer diagnosis, tackle health inequalities and save lives.
The bus tour is in collaboration with Stagecoach and will be visiting five towns and cities across the country that have some of the lowest early cancer diagnosis rates from Monday 27th November to Friday 1st December.

Her second novel The Taking of Annie Thorne was also a Sunday Times bestseller as was her third novel, The Other People. A SPOOKY SEVEN IN TEN BRITS ARE CONVINCED GHOSTS ARE REAL
Research commissioned by Paramount+ to celebrate the launch of new supernatural thriller, The Burning Girls
Does this sound like you – too scared to turn off the light before going to bed, uneasy in your car and even feeling a bit spooked at work? Then you’re one of the seven out of ten Brits who are convinced ghosts, spirits and apparitions are not just figments of our imagination.
Research out today reveals one in five Brits are convinced their own house is haunted and those polled admit they’ve walked a different route home at night to avoid walking past a spooky place or building (12%)
Overall, as many as 30% believe the town they live in to be haunted, while 17% of those polled have been spooked by local ghost tales about their local area.
The study, which looked into all things paranormal, found 15% in the UK have woken in the middle of the night to see a ghostly figure sitting on the end of their bed, while 9% have felt a sudden or unexpected chill.
A further 1 in 20 (5%) insist they have been comforted by a presence or spirit.
The research was commissioned by Paramount+ in conjunction with the launch of new supernatural thriller The Burning Girls, starring Samantha Morton and Ruby Stokes, which is available to watch now. The research found that half of respondents felt a ghostly presence was friendly, but 38% are convinced they’ve seen something ghostly that unnerved them.
The data also revealed 8% of Brits have been terrified to go to the loo on their own in someone else’s creepy house, whilst shockingly 1 in 10 have even dumped a partner because they thought where they lived was spooky.
C. J. Tudor's love of writing, especially the dark and macabre, started young. When her peers were reading Judy Blume, she was devouring Stephen King and James Herbert.
Over the years she has had a variety of jobs, including trainee reporter, radio scriptwriter, dog walker, voiceover artist, television presenter, copywriter and later, author.
C. J. Tudor's first novel The Chalk Man was a Sunday Times bestseller and sold in over forty countries. Her second novel The Taking of Annie Thorne was also a Sunday Times bestseller as was her third novel, The Other People. THE BURNING GIRLS, her fourth novel, was a Richard and Judy Book Club selection. The Drift is her fifth book, and she is also the author of A Sliver of Darkness, a collection of short stories.
Further spine-chilling research findings:
More than half of those polled (58%) believe ghosts will visit someone who wronged them when they were alive, with 56% believe people can be possessed by evil spirits.
More than 1 in 20 (6%), believe a friend or neighbours house harbours a paranormal presence while the same number are adamant their office is haunted, and 4 even believe their car might be possessed.
THE BURNING GIRLS centres around Reverend Jack Brooks (Samantha Morton) and her daughter Flo (Ruby Stokes) who move to the sleepy village of Chapel Croft, unaware of its dark secrets. After strong advice not to delve into the village’s past, Jack begins to question the disappearance of two teenage girls, Merry Joanne Lane and Joy Harris, who vanished from Chapel Croft thirty-years ago.
Jack is encouraged to play detective by a retired local journalist who also warns her about the ghosts of ‘The Burning Girls’ that haunt the chapel; two spirits of twin eight-year-old sisters burned at the stake in 1556 during Queen Mary’s purge of Protestants.
Flo quickly befriends awkward local teenager Lucas Wrigley (Conrad Khan). They share the same interests, but their friendship takes an unexpected turn when Wrigley takes Flo to an abandoned house in the woods - the former home of Merry Joanne Lane.
A malevolent force is determined to track Jack down, and it soon becomes clear Jack may be running away from secrets of her own. Her refusal to stop investigating the past means that events reach an explosive conclusion…
THE BURNING GIRLS (6 x 60-minute episodes) is an original UK drama series for Paramount+ based on the novel by C.J. Tudor and adapted by Hans Rosenfeldt (Marcella, The Bridge). The series covers themes such as exorcism, abuse, murder, martyrdom, faith and religion.
The series is produced by Buccaneer in association with Paramount Television International Studios – the international studio division of Paramount.

Discussing goal setting
Drinking more water, start saving for a holiday and go on a diet… tomorrow are just some of the goals Brits are setting themselves.
Research out today found a quarter of adults set themselves what they consider unachievable targets. While in contrast, 37 per cent set the bar too low so they can easily achieve them, with 79 per cent of these finding smashing easy goals more motivating to tackle others.
The study by HSBC UK found so far in 2023, Brits have set themselves three long and short-term goals apiece – and 34 per cent have a financial plan in place. The most common goal which Brits are achieving is to be more positive – as 70 per cent who tasked themselves with this have overcome the challenge. Being available to see friends and walking instead of driving also ranked highly.
However, 70 per cent who have tried to drink less coffee have ultimately failed.
Financial goals are also prominent in the list, such as saving more for retirement, kickstarting their investing journey and going a day without spending a penny. The research found its money-related goals which are most likely to fall by the wayside, as 43 per cent claim unexpected expenses get in the way.
And for one in four of these, more pressing goals have cropped up meaning their fiscal aspirations had to be shelved.
These financial goals, on average, have been spread out over a five-year period, and 85 per cent of them are confident they will reach these goals.
Nearly half (45 per cent) are checking in on their financial plans every month or more, while 29 per cent are reviewing their progress biannually.
The study found 72 per cent have been working hard to build an emergency fund, with these, on average, saving enough to cover their expenses for at least 15 months.

CHALLENGES OF WEIGHT LOSS DURING THE MENOPAUSE
MENOPAUSE AWARENESS DAY 2023
According to a survey, 85% of women say weight loss is more challenging during the perimenopause/after the menopause.
In fact, 79% reported that they felt their body shape had changed during this time. 90% said they’d gained weight around the waist and 37% reported a loss of muscle mass.
Now, to mark Menopause Awareness Day on Wednesday 18th October 2023, Slimming World, who conducted the research with their members*, are highlighting that you can successfully lose weight by making healthy lifestyle changes despite the new challenges the menopause can bring.
Over three quarters (79%) of the members questioned who were going through the perimenopause or had experienced the menopause said they had successfully lost weight by following Slimming World’s programme.
Meanwhile, a recent separate study published in Clinical Nutrition Open Science** revealed eight in 10 (83%) current Slimming World members reported that their health had improved up to three years after joining.
93% of members polled in the Slimming World survey attributed the improvement to their weight management and the lifestyle changes they’d made.
Of course, every woman’s experience of the menopause is unique. When it comes to symptoms of the perimenopause, over half (51%) of those questioned said they felt tired or lacked energy, some had difficulty concentrating (38%), and others found difficultly sleeping (37%).
Meanwhile, 30% reported memory problems and 29% said they had a loss of interest in sex.
Reassuringly though, the support and guidance offered around eating a healthy, balanced diet and developing and maintaining an active lifestyle can help manage symptoms and support weight loss for women during this time in their lives.

THE LONG AND STORIED HISTORY OF BROADCASTING AND COMPUTER CODING CELEBRATED FOR CODE WEEK
Europe Code Week (7th to 22nd Oct) is a grassroots initiative that aims to bring coding and digital literacy to everybody in a fun and engaging way. It’s incredibly popular, with 3.4 million people from 80 countries worldwide taking part last year.
Broadcast media and computing have a long and storied history of influence in the UK, with those behind the BBC’s Computer Literacy Project deserving great credit for their foresight and achievements. Planning for the project began in 1979, and ran from 1982 until 1989, with those who initiated it recognising the significance of the microprocessor and the economic and societal importance of understanding the language of computers.
In the early 1980s, the BBC even commissioned a home computer (more than one million BBC Micros were delivered to schools and homes) and broadcast series such as The Computer Programme (first aired on BBC2 in 1982) helped inspire a generation of coders. Many of the girls and boys who watched The Computer Programme (1982), Making the Most of the Micro (1983), and With a Little Help from the Chip (1985), may maintain a lifelong interest in coding which is yet to be fulfilled.

As the days get darker, rain brings down the mood and leaves begin to change colour, perhaps it’s time to brighten up our lives from the inside of our homes.
However, we’re a nation that’s more beige than bright with 44% describing their home colour scheme as neutral, with only 7% saying it’s colourful and 5% describing it as exciting – in fact, 12% would describe their own home as bland and boring.
Over two thirds (67%) of us would like to experiment with colours other than neutral shades, but we don’t know what shades will work (32%) and are afraid we’ll do it wrong (27%), according to new research from Homebase.
The colours we admit that we want to paint our homes, but are too nervous to do so are…
Blue, Green, Purple, Black, Yellow, Red, Metallic, Pink, Orange
[A yellow door in a room Description automatically generated]Colour consultant, Jessica Sowerby, lives inside a bright rainbow and helps others to embrace the perfect colours for their own home.

As more than a third (41%) of us admit to feeling anxious about selecting colours for our walls and 36% feel anxious about inviting people over after decorating, Jessica is on hand to give people colour confidence.
The two most important factors to us when repainting our homes, are the cost (53%) and finding the right colour for the room (51%), so being confident is key.
And as over half (53%) of us have had a painting disaster before but admit a bit more colour would brighten their mood (34%), Jessica is available to offer her top tips on the ways we can all bring a bit of brightness into our home this autumn.

94.4 fm Salford City Radio Jimmy Petruzzi interviews
Peter James is a UK No. 1 bestselling author, best known for writing crime and thriller novels, and the creator of the much-loved Detective Superintendent Roy Grace. With a total of 19 Sunday Times No. 1s under his belt, he has achieved global book sales of over 21 million copies to date, and has been translated into 38 languages.
STOP THEM DEAD
Coming this September, the latest thrilling instalment of the Roy Grace series Stop Them Dead.
When a young farmer confronts intruders in the middle of the night, he has no idea that just minutes later he will be left dying in a pool of blood. What’s more chilling is what the perpetrators were willing to kill for.
At the scene of the crime, Detective Superintendent Roy Grace soon realises this is no isolated robbery gone wrong but the tip of the iceberg of a nationwide crime wave, in which ruthless organised gangs are making more money from the illegal trade in dogs than drugs. A trade which pits him against some ruthless people who will kill anyone who gets in their way, because where there is greed, there is murder.
In this fast-paced thriller, publishing phenomenon and 19-times Sunday Times No.1 bestselling author Peter James both tells a gripping story and also exposes a deeply sinister side of the dog trade.
ITV’s ongoing smash-hit adaptation of Peter James’ Roy Grace novels continues to introduce television audiences to the world of Roy Grace. Filmed in Brighton, it stars John Simm as Roy Grace and Richie Campbell as DS Glenn Branson. The series has recently been renewed for a fourth season, which will air in 2024. The first three series are available now on ITVX and Britbox.
