I have French Cleats in my shop. I hang everything from them, lights, toolboxes, and of course tools. But have you ever considered using them in the house as a part of the decor? Well, I did. I have a full French cleat wall in my office now, I can hang pictures, shelves, nick-knacks or whatever from it. The natural Radiata pine on the blue wall make for an outstanding contrast and looks amazing. The system is completely versatile, and nothing is permanent, so as my tastes change so can my wall and the decor! no need to repair, patch holes, or figure out how to hang things level! I recently published a video about the Ryobi Dethatcher/Scarifier from the UK. This unit is now available in the United States as the P2740 from Home Depot! Our house has had the same low quality contractor grade toilets in it since it was built seven years ago, and enough is enough. Its time for a new high efficiency oval bowl toilet, and a smart toilet seat with an integrated bidet. Will all the hype that has been associated with the pandemic, including toilet paper hoarding etc., a bidet was a smart choice for us, and it was a great excuse to upgrade the toilet as well! But first things first. I needed to remove the old round bowl toilet, install a new electrical receptacle for the bidet, and Mom It Yourself wanted to paint and accent wall behind the toilet before I installed the new one. I install a new Niagara Stealth 2-Piece 0.8 GPF Ultra-High-Efficiency Single Flush Elongated Toilet in White (homedepot.sjv.io/9WLRn0) from the Home Depot for $129.00 and the UFFU Smart Bidet Toilet Seat with Adjustable Heated Seat and Water with Air Dryer, Advanced H/C Massage, Nightlight, Remote Control (https://amzn.to/3yhnTZ4) from Amazon. Total removal and installation time was about 2 hours from the toilet and seat. There was some waiting time for paint, and I had to install a new electrical receptacle with GFCI to power the seat. The toilet is amazing, a power assisted push button flush, ergonomic height, and economy water usage! The seat is the real start here, adjustable water temperatures, a heated air dryer, heated seat with a massage function, night light, and soft close seat and lid. The remote control lets you chose a variety of setting, cleaning options, and temperatures to suit your needs. I recently received a Ryobi Dethatcher Scarifier from the UK via Amazon. This unit is now available in the United States as the P2740 from Home Depot!. This is part of the 18V ONE+ line, but uses TWO 18V batteries, for extended run time. I unboxed the unit, it was light weight and relatively easy to assemble, in fact I didn't even refer to the instruction, with only one misstep, the unit was fully assembled in just a few minutes. I installed two fully charged 3ah batteries and started the tryout phase. This is where I encountered a problem. The 3ah batteries, just do not have enough "oompf" I swapped those out with to 6ah batteries, and there were no further problems, the unit ran flawlessly. But I can see why a 40V battery would be a better power source for this unit. I was able to dethatch/scarify my entire front yard, which is a little over 1,500 square feet, and this thing worked its magic. I was able to pull out a huge pile of thatch and dead grass from my lawn. I could have gone over it again, but I just didn't have enough space to dispose of the waste, another round in the fall is usually part of my lawn routine. The unit performed very well, comparable to the corded SunJoe unit. both are 13 inches wide and weigh about the same. The SunJoe has a dethatch and scarifying blade, the Ryobi only has a scarifying blade. Price wise, without the shipping from the UK, the Ryobi is a little more expensive at $278USD plus about $175USD for shipping. The SunJoe is only $159USD, and the Greenworks is $129USD. BUT the Ryobi is is cordless. The SunJoe nor the Greeworks are cordless. Greenworks and Einhall make cordless units, but you need to buy their propriety batteries, there units with batteries are $378 and $278 respectively. I am being overrun by lawn moss this year. It’s spring in the Pacific Northwest. And for me that means preparing my yard and lawn for coming season. This video will show the common man how to maintain his lawn with items from the big box stores, and not have to go through the challenges of purchasing professional grade materials, herbicides, and seeds to have an amazing lawn that makes your neighbors jealous. I started off by mowing, trimming and edging may lawn to its regular height, for me that’s about 2 1/2" this year. This helps be see the large patches of moss and weeds that will need attention. In this video I am going to tackle the moss, which unfortunately grows unabated for most of the fall and winter, once the rain starts. I normally use Lilly Miller's MOSS OUT, but this year I am going to try MossX from Scott's. I am a huge fan or their seed and fertilizer, so why not! After I let it sit for a few day while I was out of town, the results were extremely evident. The moss had turned from a green/yellow to a brown and black. The MossX was very effective. I just followed the directions on the bag, and applied it with a Scott's Broadcast Spreader! WIN! The next step was using a Power Dethatcher with a scarifying blade on it. To say this made quick work of the moss would be an understatement, it tore it from the ground and deposed it in a pile to be raked up and disposed of. If you don;t have a power rake/dethatcher/scarifier, you can use a rake with metal tines, or a dethatching rake, the goal is to get in there and pull it all out of the lawn! The ground is now clear of moss and I can get on with the rest of my Spring lawn program! We are going to remodel a kitchen! New tile new paint and lights! This project has many aspects. The owner started the project by taking all the doors off the cabinets and pulling all the drawers, then stopped. This kitchen was a disaster and needed help. Lots of help! It was small dark and dreary! The tile setter arrived, removed all the old tile, repaired the subfloor, and laid new porcelain 6:” x 24” tile. After the first take there was already a noticeable difference in the room. The remainder of the tile and all the grout was installed on the second day. After the tile setter left, the real work started. Two coats of eggshell paint on the ceiling, a nice white high gloss on the cabinets, and a satin beige on the walls. All of the paint is Behr. Material costs were right around $200.00 for paint. Three days total. After the majority of the painting was done, new light fixtures, baseboards, shelf paper, and all of the appliances were installed. We are going to rebuild an exterior wall, install a new door, replace patch and paint the sheet rock, and reside the exterior. This project has many aspects. Recently the exterior door to the garage was damaged, and needs to be replaced, previously the dryer exhaust hose had come off and for some time it was blowing hot moist air into the corner, this in turn damaged the sheetrock and the structure. Wet warm wood is not a good thing to have, and the bugs love it. And after a period, the structure has begun to fail. After removing the exiting door and removing the temporary repairs, we were able to see the extent of the damage, the entire corner of the house and the entire wall between the corner and the door needed to be removed and replaced, it was beyond salvageable. After demo, the wall was restructured, insulated, and sheeting. A vapor barrier was installed and then new 10” cedar clapboard siding was installed. Sheet rock and joint compound was added, everything was sanded and then primed and painted. One of the biggest challenges was replicating a trim piece that is no longer commercially available. All of the paint is Behr Marquee in either Satin or Flat sheen. Material costs were right around $1,000.00. We are going to flip a bathroom. This bathroom was mostly renovated by the homeowner, but needs to be brought to the finish line. This is the only bathroom in this three bedroom 1949 bungalow. The toilet had been replaced, wainscotting put up, and the tub and shower surround had been started, but was only to the point where the masonry board has been installed. We needed to update the vanity, tile the shower surround, and paint everything! The project was spread of a few days, first the tile setter came in taped and mortared all the joints, then after that had dried over night he sealed everything with Red Guard to make an impervious waterproof barrier. Then he installed the 12"x24" porcelain tiles with a simulated marble finish. This is where he really shined! Matching all of the veining really made this shower pop. The next day he finished the tile with a sanded grout. After he was done, I replaced the vanity top with a simulated marble, reattached the plumbing and started in on the painting. All of the white was a hi-gloss Behr, and the walls are a Satin Behr Marquee in a soft beige color. Material costs were right around $300.00, the tile was an addition $1,000 installed. #Shorts Every once in a while my Ryobi 18V battery won't charge and throw the charger into a fault cycle. This is troublesome, and many will suspect a faulty batter or charger. Do not despair, the solution is simple. My batteries spent a lot of time in my work truck and on the job site, they get dirty, wet, and get used frequently. The battery connection, especially with the older batteries with the waffle/crosshatch pattern on the contacts, collect dirt and grime easily. A little WD-40, or other cleaning agent, cleans these contacts and after placing the batter back on the charger, it begins to charge immediately! Simple fix! Check it out! We are going to build a bedroom closet. A bedroom is not a bedroom unless it has a closet. This is a fact. You cannot list a home with a certain number of bedrooms, unless they all have closets. And as many people know, the number of bedrooms directly influences the selling price of a home. Have a den or a bonus room is a nice feature, but a three-bedroom house sounds better than a to bedroom house with a den. You can use a bedroom as a den, but not the other way around. In this situation, the closet was removed to make the adjacent bathroom, while an awesome feature, a bigger bathroom does not justify a bedroom without a closet. So, I built a full six-foot closet with a shelf and bi-fold doors. Fortunately, the room was big enough, and the window placement was ideal, as not to make it feel like its encroaching on the space. Frankly, if you did not know there was not a closet there before, you would not know. The project was spread of a few days, first the area was measured (a closet must be a minimum of 24" deep for the finished surfaces, and this one was a full six feet wide). And from floor to ceiling. It was framed with 2x4 lumber. In a cost or space saving method, you could use 2x3 lumber, but I would not go any smaller than that. The walls would be flimsy for sure. Then it was drywalled on the inside and out, joint compound and tape were applied as required, and left to dry. Once dry it was sanded, a second smoother feathering coat was added, and that was sanded when dry. The walls were painted with Behr Marquee interior latex paint that was color matched at the local Home Depot, the casings, and the base boards were installed, caulked, and painted with a Behr semi-gloss white, then the doors were hung. Material costs were right around $600.00, The doors making up most of that at a little over $100.00 each. I have recently been hired to perform some repairs as part of a home renovation that is going to be going on the market. The house overall is in pretty good condition, and the current homeowners have done some great work, they have just run out of steam and want to move on. The kitchen needs a complete makeover. There isn't time or money for new cabinets or countertops. But the cabinets will get repaired and repainted and all the doors rehung with new hardware. New floors, paint and light fixtures will round out this portion of the project. I will be framing and installing a closet with bi-fold doors and a simple shelf. The bedrooms had the closet removed to make the adjacent bathroom bigger. Speaking of bathroom, its been mostly completed, but the shower will get new 12 x 24" tile on the shower surround to finish it. There was significant damage to the back wall of the garage from a poorly installed dryer vent. So, the wall and door will have to be repaired/reframed, and the exterior sided, and the inside with new drywall and paint. Finally a new fence will be installed in the back yard, the fence blew down in one of our frequent windstorms, the yard will get a makeover as well, mowed, trimmed, etc. Check it out. I was commissioned to build a display case for a U.S. military veteran who has passed away. It was an honor to provide this case for a fellow Brother-in-Arms. I built it out of S4S Red Oak using standard mitered corners. The top was a typical 45 degree miter, but the lower corners were a sharp 45 degree that required a tenoning jig to cut the board on the vertical. The flag is large, almost six feet wide and over nine feet long. When folded it is a triangle that is 24 inches wide, 12 inches tall, and about 5 inches thick. This project can be built in a weekend with standard wood shop tools. I was recently hired to replace the gutters and down spouts on a house that I had done some previously installed vinyl gutters in a different location. The existing gutters on the second story had been ripped off in a wind storm by a falling tree limb, while no gutter system can usually survive this, the gutters that were there were in need of replacement anyways. I will let you in on a little secret, I have only installed gutters a couple of times before, metal or vinyl. Amerimax, the manufacturer, has a great website with instructional videos, and downloadable forms for itemized parts listing and installation. It was a breeze! Because the tree had done all the work, there was no removal necessary. This run is over 40 feet long, in fact its 45 feet. So that requires two downspouts, the previous installation had two, so I stuck with the plan! I located the down spout “trap” at the lowest point on the eaves, so that I could slope to that point. Then installed the new down spout. The gutters come in 10’ sections with easy snap together “joiners”. There were three full 10 foot sections, and then a seven foot section on each end from the gutter to the downspout trap. A small section from the roof end to the downspout was put in place with an easy to install end cap. Everything snapped together, and mounted to the fascia with stainless steel screws through slip on mounting hangers. These hangers are installed 12” from the ends and on 24” centers normally. My configuration has them installed 10” from the ends and on 20” centers. This will help with the snow load that we sometimes received. The manufacturer recommends 18” centers in heavier snow climates. After everything was installed on the fascia, I installed the down spouts, they emptied out onto the lower roof, one had to be turned 90 degrees and not to shoot water across and under the shingles. the other was a normal installation. Finally it was onto the gutter guard. These were relatively easy to install it just a matter of slipping one edge under the shingles, and clipping the front edge to the gutter brackets. In between each segment of screen, you cut a small notch in the front of the guard, so they will overlap and support the ends. A few of the brackets needed to be moved to provide even support of the guards, in a future installation I will probably add more brackets for support, they are relatively inexpensive and will provide for a more rigid system. I'm still on the fence about these. #Shorts No one likes a dead battery. I have three 40V batteries and only one charger. In a perfect work, I would keep one on the charger, and the other two fully charged, but it never happens. And if you know anything about the Ryobi 40V tools, you know they like to use batteries, especially because two of mine are only 2.0aH, and the other is a 6.0aH. I have been a woodworker since middle school, over 35 years, and I have never made a cutting board. Well, this project is my first attempt at a cutting board. It was amazingly easy, and hesitation I had about building one is now gone. I will be making many more in the months and years to come! I made this board with walnut scraps from my wood bin, a left-over piece of birch butcher block, and a slab of cherry that was given to me years ago. #Shorts Using the tried and true French Cleat wall mount system and incorporating a 3D printed tool holder. While this one is black, I have since been able to match the Ryobi Green! I originally printed this on a Colido DIY 3D Printer, I have since replaced it with a Longer LK4. The technology has come light years in such a short time. After the the holder is printed, I assemble the tool holder, attache the cleat, then hang it. This is my 100th Video! No one likes a tennis ball hanging in the middle of their garage to help with parking. We needed a retractable tennis ball solution. We have tried a few different things, a cardboard box was the most successful, and recently we purchased a proximity sensor that has a Stop Sign that turns from Green to Yellow, to Red as you approach. This this was garbage. I tried everything to get it set correctly, it never allowed the car to get close enough before turning red, thereby leaving the back pumper of the car in the path of the closing garage door! My wife likes parking in the garage in the winter. It’s cold out there, it rains a lot, so I have accommodated her. That said, it is a tight fit to get her 2011 Mustang in the garage, we only have a few feet of clearance from the front to the furnace, and the back to the door. So So, after watching a couple of videos on YouTube, I got the basics, of how I could make a retractable tennis ball parking target in my garage. With some string, a tape measure, a ladder, and of course a tennis ball I set out to solve our parking problem! Mom It Yourself says the dryer is not drying the clothes. The kids keep leaving the lint on the screen, and something is stopping the screen from going all the way down into its slot. I also noticed that there is a bunch of lint behind the dryer, and there is way too much vent hose! SO, lets, pull that lint filter out and see what is clogging it up. Gross. Let’s jump behind the dryer, clean it up, and shorten that vent hose. Gross. It only took me a few minutes to take care of a few simple tasks, and now the dryer works like a champ!!
