Is Mastering One Song Necessary? #mastering #spotify
Mastering One Single Song: Is It Necessary? One question I am always asked is if mastering a single is still necessary these days. And my answer to this question is the same no matter what year we are.
I believe that even with the proliferation of artificial intelligence tools, one thing remains constant, you still have to make critical listening decisions and still are at the mercy of your listening environment which has to be very neutral.
Mastering engineers can also provide sound advice, which makes it worthwhile to invest in a professional, especially given the particular advantages of doing so.
Mastering is the final step in the music production process, and it involves polishing and refining a mix to ensure that it sounds its best on a variety of playback systems. It is a complex and nuanced process that requires a high level of skill and experience.
Let me be clear, even with only one song, it is important that it is frequency balanced so that it can translate on many playback devices.
The Benefits of Mastering a Single Song
There are several benefits to mastering a single song, even if you are not releasing a full album.
Improved sound quality: Mastering can improve the overall sound quality of a song by making it louder, clearer, and more balanced. This can help your song stand out from the competition and make it more enjoyable for listeners.
Consistency: Mastering can help to ensure that your song sounds consistent with other commercial releases. This is especially important if you are planning to submit your song to streaming platforms or radio stations.
Professionalism: A well-mastered song will sound more professional and polished. This can help you to make a good impression on potential fans and industry professionals.
When Is Mastering a Single Song Not Necessary?
There are a few situations where mastering a single song may not be necessary.
If you are not happy with the mix: If you are not satisfied with the way your song sounds after mixing, then mastering is unlikely to make a significant difference. It is important to get a good mix before you start mastering.
If you are on a tight budget: Mastering can be expensive, especially if you hire a professional mastering engineer. If you are on a tight budget, you may want to consider mastering your song yourself using online tools or software.
If you are not releasing your song commercially: If you are not planning to release your song commercially, then you may not need to have it mastered. However, mastering can still improve the sound quality of your song, even if you are only sharing it with friends and family.
Overall, mastering a single song is not strictly necessary, but it can offer a number of benefits, including improved sound quality, consistency, and professionalism. If you are serious about your music, then I recommend mastering your single song, especially if you are planning to release it commercially.
Here are some specific examples of how mastering can improve a single song:
A mastering engineer can help to balance the levels of the different instruments and vocals in a song, so that everything sounds clear and distinct.
They can also use equalization to correct any frequency imbalances in the mix.
Mastering engineers can also use compression and limiting to make the song louder and more punchy, without sacrificing sound quality.
Finally, they can use stereo imaging techniques to make the song sound wider and more immersive.
If you are unsure whether or not you should master your single song, I recommend getting a second opinion from a professional mastering engineer. They can assess your mix and give you their recommendations.

The Power of Spectrum Analyzers | An Introduction Video
In the audio engineer's toolkit, there is no more powerful tool than the spectrum analyzer.
Whether one is using spectrum analysis to measure one's room, frequency response of an audio signal, or an entire music production, a real time spectrum analyzer {"RTA"} is an invaluable tool which helps one put in perspective what one is listening to.
This is only an introduction video explained in layman's term and with least technical jargon so even amateur engineers can understand.
It also comes with some cool graphic displays and audio metaphors which should not be taken literally.

The Future of Audio Engineering Revealed in 2023 | #mastering #audio
The time has come to redefine our understanding of audio engineering, music mastering, and mixing for that matter, incorporating the new A.I tools that are revolutionizing the world of audio. Think Beatles 'Now & Then' as another example for the future of audio engineering.
Have you ever wondered what mixtering is and why it's revolutionizing the audio industry?" Mixtering is an audio engineering term created by mixing and mastering engineer, Edward Vinatea in the late 1980's. Today, we're going to dive into this fascinating concept that's reshaping the way we think about sound engineering.
Mixtering, at its core, is a blend of traditional mixing and mastering. It's a departure from the age-old notion of music "mastering" as a separate, stand-alone process. This isn't a brand new idea, but it's garnering more attention in the industry as professionals seek to optimize sound quality. Now, you might be wondering, what's the difference between mixtering and an engineer doing both mixing and mastering? Well, it's all about the environment.
Many mixing engineers try to master their own work, but they often lack the necessary experience or skills to do so effectively. Moreover, they usually conduct the mastering in the same room they used for mixing. This room isn't designed for mastering, it's cluttered with equipment, furniture, and other elements that can interfere with sound quality.
This is where mixtering sets itself apart. It's not just about combining the processes of mixing and mastering; it's about creating the ideal environment to do so. I'm talking about a neutral listening environment, a space that's carefully designed and fine-tuned to eliminate sound reflection problems and optimize sound quality. In this space, the mixtering process can be carried out with precision. Without a large console or mixer, the workspace is reduced in size, minimizing potential reflective surfaces.
The mixing process usually begins with stems, allowing for processing beyond the specifications and limitations of the system. A mix is divided into main stereo groups, or stems, which then produce the stereo 'production mix'. This mix is then fine-tuned and "mastered" to the desired target format.
This isn't a process for the faint-hearted; it requires focus, extensive music engineering experience, and a deep understanding of sound. But when done right, the results can be exceptional, giving life to mixes that were previously thought to be beyond repair. "This is what sets apart professionals in the field, who have created the ideal environment and workstation for mixing and mastering, or as we now call it, mixtering.

A simple vetting trick to identify professional engineers known for many years to the music industry
Who cuts the mustard to be considered a professional, "real" mastering engineer? Simple tip to identify a mastering engineer and prevent being taken for a ride.
This is really more relevant to English speaking people in native English speaking countries. The intention is to help clueless artists and producers make a more informed decision as to who to hire.
Most effective results in official English speaking countries (read disclaimer below).
This simple check is just a quick vetting process to determine whether a person has at one point in his life mastered a commercial music record.
If you're willing to pay upwards of $70 per song, you need to make sure you are getting value for your money, and NOT paying to finance someone's delusional convictions.

This vetting tip may not work on audio engineers belonging to non-native English speaking countries.
You are responsible for your own career decisions and the same principle applies if you are an aspiring audio engineer, a hobbyist or music enthusiast.
In most cases, an "amateur" mastering engineer often renders better mastering results than any artificial intelligence mastering algorithm.
As always, experiment with these options and do due diligence.

How To Submit A Spotify Song To AllMusic.com in 2023
AllMusic.com is perhaps the most reliable music industry platform used by institutions such as The Recording Academy (Grammy) to verify, not only artist credits, but the credential of all professional session musicians, tracking, mixing, mastering engineers, and much more.

Submitting a song to this third party without mistakes can be a daunting task which usually ends up in submission rejection.
While this video provides step by step instructions from a mastering engineer's perspective, the information within could be applied to anyone (i.e. singers, music composers, producers, managers, audio engineers, etc).
