Paul understood that he could not do the work of the ministry alone. In Colossians 4, he mentions the names of several fellow laborers who helped him to shoulder the load. We pray to the Father by the mechanism of the Holy Spirit, who helps us stay focused, brings order, guides us in all truth, and gives us the burden of what to pray for. It is not natural for us to pray; the Spirit makes intercession for us because we don’t know what to pray for or how to pray. We pray to the Father through Christ, who opens the door to God for us as our High Priest. In the Old Testament, God appointed priests for men, but now the institution of the priesthood is done away with. We do not need a human to be our mediator because we have Christ. We have direct access to God through grace. God wants us to take our prayers boldly to His throne and come to Him with prayers from the heart. Christ taught us to address God as our Father when we pray. Through Christ, we have a new relationship with God; we have the kind of access that comes from being His children, partakers in the Sonship of Christ. We are instructed to ask, to seek, and to knock until He gives us what is in His will for us. Our prayers should be direct, sincere, and simple.
