Nothing crazy- just showing how I replaced the rear quarter window in my 2015 WRX. There weren't any tutorials or even write-ups on how to do this so I figured I'd document it for everyone else. Cheers!

The S2400 has some of the best groove and punch on the planet. It also has Choke Groups that can make sounds cut each other off, creating a gating effect between the various sounds in your songs. Combined, this makes for a SERIOUSLY awesome sounding drum machine sampler, but getting that same sound you worked hard to perfect into your DAW requires a special technique in order to preserve all the groove you created. In this video, I'll explain WHY choke grouping is a thing, WHY you want to use it, HOW it affects your songs, and HOW to properly record your tracks from the S2400 into your DAW. After searching for some of the wildest, glitchiest hardware effects boxes I could fine, I stumbled across the Boss RSD-10. This thing is vintage digital mayhem. What makes it unique is that it's terribly designed in the best way meaning it does all the things a typical delay unit... well... shouldn't. It frequently glitches out when switching modes. It saves "ghost" recordings in it's memory and replays them at random times, layered with the current original sound. It also has a "keyboard input" which allows you to plug a synthesizer into it and trigger back sampled recordings in different pitches, OR change the pitch tracking of the delayed signal playback. This of course leads to even more weirdness. That being said, the Boss RSD-10 is highly usable and said to be many producer's secret weapon. In this video I'll show you various effects builds that quite often make their way into my songs using the various delay ranges and manually automating the feedback knob. Also, I frequently feed loops into it and play with the various parameters while recording in Ableton, capturing all those beautifully odd nuggets of gold that you can slice out and use for unique percussion bits in my music. This particular unit requires a "wet mod" in order to get a 100% wet signal out of it. This was a daunting task at first because it does require you take the entire unit apart and de-solder and remove a capacitor, but fortunately I captured the entire process with photos and will be writing up a "How To" on my website which I'll link here soon. These Boss effects units are now fairly rare, and while hard to find, can usually be had for a couple hundred dollars, so modifying them to become strange delay glitch machines isn't too nerve wracking- highly recommended in fact. In this video I'm using my beloved Isla Instruments S2400 sampler to trigger sounds into the Boss RSD-10 for effects. Guitar pedals aren't just for guitars, and the Julianna Deluxe is a perfect case-in-point. This stereo chorus and vibrato pedal creates fantastic results paired with your synthesizer, sampler, or drum machine in the studio. While its controls may look pretty standard, this thing packs a whole-lot of flexibility and tone-shaping controls in a standard pedal sized enclosure. You've got two LFOs that can be assigned to each other to create lush and wide choruses, subtle or wild vibratos, and everything in between. The Julianna Deluxe also lets you use both outputs (mono & stereo) to stack your signal making your sounds huge, allowing you to control the stereo image as well. I fed a bunch of samples from my trusty S2400 through the Julianna Deluxe to test out it's various tones and see what kind of effects I could get on the way into my DAW. There's LOTS of nuance in this thing. It can be wild or subtle. I was pleasantly surprised at how it made my samples 'sit in the mix' with drums. Check the video and listen for yourself! *Now accepting clients for mixing & mastering services - see below* I had a few people request a shorter version of my "how to make stems" video, so here's a shorter, more concise tutorial on how to make stems for mixing, mastering, and remixing, and how to zip them and send them. Keep in mind, if you're going to be printing individual stems for mixing, you'll want to solo each track independently instead of grouping them together. The rest is the same process however. PLEASE MAKE SURE TO DOUBLE CHECK YOUR STEMS BEFORE SENDING. I make a strong point of this because if the stems are not correct it creates a huge headache, so lets get it right the first time! Just pop them back into your DAW before zipping them and sending them to me or your mix/mastering engineer. Takes an extra couple of minutes but saves a lot of headache in the future. Granular synthesis has for a long time been an integral technique used by sampler and synthesis fanatics everywhere. It's a powerful technique where a "grain" or small snippet of a sample is used as the base sound or waveform of a larger sounding synthesizer preset, typically made with a digital sampler or granular synthesizer. The methods vary a bit depending on which you're using, but they largely start from the same place- using a tiny bit of sound to create a larger, more complex sound. In this video I'll show you how to do granular synthesis on the Isla Instruments S2400. It's important to note that this machine, while it's incredible in all that it can do and how it sounds, is still in the early stages of firmware development and many people still haven't received their units, so over time the methods used in this video may change and need to be updated. I'll make sure to stay on top of this and make new videos as the machine grows and progresses. Alright- some of the people on the S2400 forum were requesting those of us who had our units make more video content for them to watch while they were waiting for their units. I've never actually made a video before actually learning a piece of gear inside and out, but in this instance I thought it would be fun to talk about why I'm excited about this thing, make some sounds on it, and let you all watch me fumble my way through working with it. Here's the thing- for me, this is a piece of gear that I've dreamed about owning for well over a decade, and the team over at Isla Instruments finally made it, so this is not a piece of gear that I'll try and sell for something else. It truly is a something that I'll most likely have for life and so I will without a doubt be making LOTS of videos on it- tutorials, performances, etc. This video is just the start and meant to be taken lightly. @3:38 to jump to Halcyon nightclub @6:26 to jump to A/B/C shootout of mixers For years... decades even, I've heard this argument about one mixer sounding better than the other. Analog being better than digital. The Model 1 being the Holy Grail of all DJ mixers. Some people are Pioneer DJ tribalists, others Allen & Heath, and a growing number are even Denon tribalists. One thing is for sure: they're all fantastic mixers and have top notch sound. BUT, I wanted to figure it out for good and listen to all of them back to back so I could know for certain. I figured I'd film it all and let you enjoy it as well, so here it is! My thoughts: Pioneer DJM-900 Nexus 2: This is a fantastic mixer and perhaps one of the most widely used and accepted DJ mixers in the entire world. Pioneer has had a strong-hold on the club scene and for good reason- their products are built to take a beating for years and to reliably produce high quality sound. There's a few things I love about this mixer- mainly it's easy to use FX and one-knob filters. Also, the internal limiter in this mixer is bar-none one of the most transparent sounding limiters I've heard in DJ gear. Most of the time I have a tough time audibly being able to tell if the mixer is redlining. Allen & Heath Xone 92: Also a fantastic mixer. This mixer is all analog which is fantastic, but don't just get caught up in the analog hype. It has it's pros and it's cons. The Xone 92 indeed sounds flawless in terms of quality and does have a ton of gain to boost your signal. It also has a nice "roundness" to the bass frequencies. I don't believe it has an internal limiter so if you're not paying attention with all that gain, you can clip your signal pretty easily. It's analog, so the clipping does sound pretty good, but it's still clipping. For contrast, the DJM-900's internal limiter seems to handle clipping peaks in a slightly more intelligent and transparent way. Playdifferently Model 1: This mixer is indeed the Rolls Royce of DJ mixers. It has practically any feature you'd want on a mixer without being overly complicated. The dual high pass and low pass filter knobs and sweepable midrange filters are fantastic and really allow you to sculpt your sound however unlike Pioneer's one knob filter, you can't as easily go from HPF to LPF as easily. Also, your average DJ isn't going to know what to do with all those filter options. The dual headphone outputs, direct record output on the mixer face, channel drive knobs, and EQ'able booth are what make me love this mixer the most. Sure, it has a built in audio interface and 6 channels, but those are things only the most experienced producers-turned-DJ will use. Also, the build quality is bar none and many of the knobs have fantastic resistance to them when turning. All of them seem to have their own filter sounds too. Not one is exactly like the other. So, I’ve decided that anything I don’t release on @deepmnmltech I’m just going to be self releasing. I hate “shopping for labels”... sending tracks out, just to wait for weeks and never hear back. Or hear back and have to wait weeks to have the track approved and released. I’m over it. It’s just a proverbial stick-in-the-spokes of my creative process. It was always something that got in my way because I’d be stoked on a song, only for the excitement to fizzle out shopping labels and then by the time I post it, I’m over it. Telling people to shop for labels IMO is actually kind of terrible advice anyways. It’s a sort of gatekeeping mentality that your music is only good enough if it’s approved by someone else. So, I’ve decided to self release. From here on out all my music will be released on @distrokid and on all major streaming platforms as soon (or shortly after) as it’s completed. If someone wants to sign a song- we can talk about working on future projects. I’m aiming to really ramp up my releases and put things out regularly. I’ve got album art templates I like a lot and am even doing my own mastering. It’s a metric butt load of work being a completely self sufficient artist. It’s taken me 20 years to get to where I am now, and to be happy with my final product. With all that off my chest- here’s my latest one. Lots of heart went into this one. I always thought it was some piece of gear I didn't have or some processor that made them pop. Turns out it's all about technique. In this video I'm gonna show you some various different methods you can use to get your drums not just triggering, but moving and talking with each other. First we'll make a quick drum pattern on the Roland TR-8S and then use the Motion Record feature to get the drums sounding a bit more active. Then we'll use Reason 11's Drum Sequencer and UMPF Drum Machine and Max 4 Live LFO's to modulate various parameters of the drum samples. Finally, we'll use AudioThing's Hats plugin and create some additional movement with filter modulation and sidechain compression. Now, you don't have to use all of these techniques at the same time- but if you employ even a few of them in your songs I think you'll find that your drums have a whole new layer of groove and movement once they're talking to each other and having a conversation. Togu Audio Line (TAL) has released the J-8 plugin- an incredible rendition of the famous and insanely expensive and rare Roland Jupiter-8 synthesizer that was produced between 1981 and 1985. The original price was $5,295 whereas they currently sell for around $23,000 used (and often in pretty bad shape physically). TAL took the time to do a physical model of their very own Jupiter-8 synthesizer by painstakingly recreating each oscillator, envelope, and filter. They even included the Juno 60 choruses, as well as "service control" and "calibration" panels that let you dial in some additional vintage wear-and-tear on your plugin. Considering the rarity and going price for these things, having a plugin that accurately recreates the sound as well as let you stack instances and write automation... I think we can all agree it's a great time to be a musician (the original didn't include MIDI implementation). In this video I don't go through every preset or feature of the plugin, but rather point out some of my favorite aspects of it, as well as do a brief comparison of TAL's Jupiter 8 rendition to Arturia's (must watch if you're deciding between one or the other). To wrap things up, I'll demo some sounds for you in context of how I make my own music and use a synth like the J-8 in my music- Tech House mainly. Have you tried the TAL J-8 yet? I've had the Poly Evolver since 2014 and honestly have always been unhappy with the lack of tutorials on it. It's a fantastic synthesizer and super unique in many ways. It can be used as a 4 oscillator hybrid synth, having two analog and two digital oscillators. Or it can be used as a 4 mono synths, each with it's own sequencer. It's sort of like a modular synth in one keyboard. Almost anything can be routed anywhere. It's got 4 modulation slots, 4 LFOs, oscillator slop (to keep things sounding organic), and stereo analog filters with Curtis chips. It's become an essential part of my sound, my studio, and my work flow. This tutorial is on how to build a clap which is fairly universal for all synthesizers, but I wanted to see what that sounded like on the Poly Evolver. Also, it's just good exercise. You should be able to use this as a template and tweak the sound to be what you need it to be. I've recorded it dry so you can hear exactly what's going on when I work my way through making each change to the sound. Full disclosure: I'm still learning this thing. It's not your average synthesizer. It's super deep, well laid out but complex, and to be honest there's not a ton of user guides or videos on it. Fortunately the Poly Evolver is great for learning and exploring considering it's almost one-knob-per-function. The Carbon 111 guide is probably the best, but even that falls short of going in-depth and creating sounds. I'm hoping to dive deep into this thing, with you all. Many people are upset that Behringer has copied the Arturia Keystep with their new product Swing. It looks to most like an almost exact replica. What's more strange to me is how everybody is criticizing Behringer when in fact they're not unique by copying the product of another company. It happens all the time. Cars, cameras, clothes, furniture, cosmetics... you name it. This is free-market capitalism 101 and in the end, we as musicians stand to benefit from companies duplicating, improving, and lowering the prices of things they produce. Behringer has come a long way with their quality and in the last few years has been relentlessly releasing new products- many new and unique to them, as well as a slew of synthesizers that were longed for by many and owned by few. Now people are able to get their hands on the gear they've always wanted and with modern technology, these products will likely last twice or thrice as long as their vintage brethren. Synthesizers made in the 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's, and even 90's, used older technology that didn't last as long as modern components do. Considering these new music products are made to replicate the sound of older gear but with newer technology, the end user will likely get a lifetime of usage with minimal part replacements needed. For the price of ONE vintage synth, you could have 5 or 10 Behringer synths. You could have an entire symphony of analog gear, so what's to hate? How do you feel about Behringer copying music gear? Alright so after months of searching for a rackmount mixer for my studio desk, months of scouring the internet for details and recommendations, I finally pulled the trigger on the Roland M-480. This thing is an absolute behemoth. Definitely NOT the right choice for someone who's shy on space... or is it?! For 6U of rack space this thing is actually pretty damn efficient. It's got 48 independent 1/4" mono inputs which is as far as I know, the most amount of inputs ever put into a rack mixer. It's got an [A] and a [B] mix- you can use either one by itself to create a subgroup of channels to send to one of your two stereo master outputs (Master or Sub) OR select both [A] & [B] for a stereo input for that particular track. 24 stereo inputs is crazy- I don't even have the room to fit all that gear although I'm sure I will one day. Room to grow! At $350, this thing was a steal. I'm able to send all of my drum machines, samplers, sound modules, and synthesizers through it to capture the 'mixer sound' as well as having the convenience of not having to plug things in every time. I do have a patch bay too but I must admit, even patching things got a bit tiresome after a while. It's got four FX sends, two AUX sends, returns, two master outs, and even a stereo input on the front of the unit. It's also got a CUE which is wild for a mixer. It really does seem like this thing was made with performance in mind, for electronic musicians. It's an older mixer from the 90's I believe and was Roland's flagship rack mixer that sold originally for ~$3,000. I love the vintage atheistic. The colors and layout just scream 90's. I believe these things are pretty rare these days, however I do see them pop up on Reverb and eBay every now and then. And as always, there's usually one or two sitting available for way more than they should be selling for (looking at you //ARMENS lol). Do you use a line mixer in your studio? How do you use it? This sound is a more modern Flume style future bass or deep house sound that work great with chords. It's also got some aftertouch controlling the filter amount so there's some movement as you play. As you know with music production and synthesis, any bit of movement you can create drastically improves the overall interest of your finished piece of music. Using aftertouch in my sounds has become the default. Again, I'm aiming to make some more modern sounds on the Poly Evolver since so much content online features more classic sounding synth patches. Some will be experimental, some more normal, but all sounds that I would use in my own music. These tutorials should be repeatable on most synthesizers, so try to follow along with whatever synth you've got. If you don't have similar functions on the synth- try figuring out another way to achieve the same effects. It's a great way to learn synthesis. Full disclosure: I'm still learning this thing. It's not your average synthesizer. It's super deep, well designed but complex, and to be honest there's not a ton of user guides or videos on it. Fortunately the Poly Evolver is great for learning and exploring considering it's almost one-knob-per-function. The Carbon 111 guide is probably the best, but even that falls short of going in-depth and creating sounds. I'm hoping to dive deep into this thing, with you all. This one's a simple bell sound with a bit of noise and delay. In the video I used two thin pulse waves and a formant waveform. There are specific bell wave shapes available for oscillators 3 and 4 but I chose not to use them for this bell sound. Just goes to show you a generic pulse wave can do wonders. Check the Wave Shapes Chart below to find the exact numbers for the bell wave shapes if you'd like to experiment with those. I've had the Poly Evolver since 2014 and honestly have always been unhappy with the lack of tutorials on it. It's a fantastic synthesizer and super unique in many ways. It can be used as a 4 oscillator hybrid synth, having two analog and two digital oscillators. Or it can be used as a 4 mono synths, each with it's own sequencer. It's sort of like a modular synth in one keyboard. Almost anything can be routed anywhere. It's got 4 modulation slots, 4 LFOs, oscillator slop (to keep things sounding organic), and stereo analog filters with Curtis chips. It's become an essential part of my sound, my studio, and my work flow. This preset is a recent favorite of mine. It's a simple bass sound for tech house type of songs. I've recorded it dry so you can hear exactly what's going on when I work my way through making each change to the sound.
