Truth and Consequences - What are We Sowing?
Truth and consequences is a fundamental biblical concept. Jeff takes us on a journey with Paul, Ruth, and David to understand how living according to the truth will have consequences. It is important to know that we can’t cheat God, as God gives to everyone the consequences of their actions. As we celebrate Canada Day and July Fourth it is important to remember the truths that will have the consequence of blessing our nations.

Temptation — Don't Give Way to What is Wrong
The apostle Paul wrote that temptation was something common to all human experience. But that it could be resisted by those who put their trust in God. He would faithfully provide the help needed to endure without yielding to temptation.
Interestingly, Paul tied resisting temptation into the concept of fleeing from idolatry. This can be understood in its broadest sense when we realize that anything that is more important to us than God and his way is an 'idol.'

Restoring the Paths — Ezra and Nehemiah Rebuilding the Walls
Ezra and Nehemiah
Ezra the scribe had returned to Jerusalem with a valuable cargo of precious vessels to restore the temple worship. But he was greatly dismayed by the moral and spiritual state of the people. It would seem that they had fallen back into many of the harmful practices that had led to their captivity in the first place. Eventually, as a result of dealing with dangers without, and betrayal within the community, Ezra knew he would need help. He understood the importance of rebuilding the walls, both literally and metaphorically. They were needed to protect a pure relationship with God and defend against corrupting outside influences.
Paul, in his writings, alluded to this episode in biblical history. He likened believers to vessels in God's temple and highlighted the importance of being pure and prepared to do God's service.

Restoring the Paths — Rebuilding the Temple
Challenges to Overcome
The biblical story of Zerubbabel, Jeshua, and their brothers has many important lessons for those who see the need to restore the paths of God today. They faced many obstacles in fulfilling God's purpose by rebuilding the temple of God at Jerusalem. Though they had received the permission and blessing of King Cyrus of Persia to do the work, the building project was hindered on many fronts. The political powers of the local area felt threatened and were constantly harassing the workers. Some of the workers became weary and turned to their own business interests. Others, seeing the enormity of the task before them and feeling discouraged by very real impediments, just wanted to give up. Others lamented that they were not able to replicate the majesty and beauty of the previous temple. Some wondered if the temple would ever be restored.

Restoring the Paths — Reviving the Household of God
The church of God is in a state of disrepair as a result of decades of attacks from without and within. This has divided the people of God and limited their effectiveness in performing God's will. And what is God's will? Often referred to as the 'Great Commission,' the will of God is that his people should 'teach all nations (ethnic groups) to observe all the things that were commanded in the scriptures.' And in so doing, they would make more disciples to carry on this work. Christ would be working through his people, generation after generation, and this work would continue to be done until the time of Christ's return. So are we working to restore the paths as Christ would desire us to do?

Restoring the Paths — Repairing the Breaches
The prophet Isaiah wrote to encourage the people of God with a message of hope in restoring the paths and rebuilding the ruins. This was all predicated on the people returning to God and re-establishing justice based on the truth of scripture. History offers us the examples of those who put the pursuit of the truth and doing what was right, ahead of personal ambition or ideology. General Robert E. Lee was such a person, one who was willing to suffer, if need be, to do what was right and honourable. He was willing to act without pride, and to do what was best for his people in suing for peace, instead of pursuing a protracted guerrilla war. What about us? Are we restoring the path and repairing the breaches?

Divine Encouragement
Divine encouragement is not the modern concept of “Go on; you can do it!” Rather, it is a reminder that good outcomes are more than the result of mere human ability, strength, or perseverance. It is a reminder that God is our strength and refuge in times of trouble. Though the earth is in turmoil, and nations are in chaos, the Lord God promises that he will preserve his people and give them a future. Where will we find this divine encouragement?

In the Lord's Service — Freedom and Duty?
Are we willingly engaged in the Lord's service? We are free to choose who we will serve, but we will serve someone or something. We have many examples of compelled service in scripture, as often the people of God lived under oppressive governments with laws that included forced labour. God on the other hand, gives us freedom to choose. He asks those who serve him to do so willingly, even joyfully. He wants his people to be conscientious and motivated by love to serve voluntarily and not out of compulsion.Learn more from the scriptures about a life of service to God.

God's Nature — God of Mercy — Remember All His Benefits
While Canada and the US celebrate their national holidays, it would seem many have forgotten the source of their blessings. They are the "nones," atheists, agnostics, and those with "no particular religion" who see no role for a God of mercy in their lives. On the other hand, David, the psalmist, reminds us, "Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not his benefits." So what are those benefits, and how does God extend his mercy to all those who worship and serve Him?

God's Nature — God is Just — Right Side of the Future
Right Side of the Future
The US Supreme court decision to support "gay" marriage divided the nation. Those who supported the ruling were saying that they were "On the right side of history" But is that where a Christian wants to be? Or should we rather be concerned about being, "on the right side of the future?" Jeff reminds us of the scriptures that teach us about God's wisdom, truth, justice, mercy, and loyalty and His plans for the future. Will we be on God's side, the right side of the future?

Enemies — Dealing with the Adversaries
Jesus had enemies, those who hated his message and denied his authority to speak for God. And those who follow in Jesus' footsteps as his disciples will also need to deal with enemies. Yet, ultimately, Jesus, the Lord of Lords, will return and when he does his adversaries will attempt to fight against him. But the Lord of Hosts will defeat those who hate him and remain hostile to his way of life. The Lord will destroy all of his enemies, but this is only the final chapter in a long history.
So what about now? And what about us? What should our attitude and approach be when it comes to our adversaries?
The scriptures provide ample guidance.

Christ — Who is Your Rock
Who is Your Rock? When it comes to security and safety, the bible uses the metaphor of building on the Rock, instead of sand or gravel. Over the past decade people in a variety of places around the world have experienced disastrous consequences for having built on sand. At these locations in times of earthquake, buildings, roads and bridges have been destroyed due to liquefaction of the underlying sand or silt. This has had huge costs in terms of lives lost and infrastructure damaged. Spiritually speaking, if we build on sand – worthless and shifting ideologies — when tectonic social or political shifts occur, the result is personal disaster. So are we building on the Rock or on sand?

God's Nature — God is Good
Why do we worship God? Why do we want to have a personal relationship with the God of the bible? Learning lessons from Solomon and Paul, we can appreciate God’s nature in dealing with his people, and even those who do not acknowledge Him. God is good, always and for all time, and for this reason we can walk with Him in confidence and with gratitude. So how is God good?

God's Nature – God Loves Justice
The Rule of Law
The rule of law has become a politically hot issue. But is the rule of law an issue that is important to God? Is it true that God loves justice? When it comes to our judicial proceedings there are accusations and counter-accusations of bribery and fraud, of political interference, and corrupt judges. It would seem at times that Isaiah understood the nature of our times when he wrote. “Justice is turned back, And righteousness stands afar off; for truth is fallen in the street, and equity cannot enter.” Yet, we have hope in a Messiah who will bring equity and righteousness. His government will bring peace. How? With justice based on the rule of law.

God's Nature - What God Hates
Most Christians know that ‘God is love.” God’s character is one of loving loyalty.
But do we know what God hates?
Jesus in explaining the coming Kingdom of God spoke of a future time when the wheat was to be gathered into the barn. But he also made it clear that the tares, the weeds, would be burned. This analogy of harvest season represented the coming reality. The saints, the sons of the Kingdom would receive a reward for their faithful service to God. But there was also a “reward” for the lawless, those who used deceit and entrapment to lure others away from the perfect law of liberty. Jesus confirmed that there was coming a day of judgment. And the standard of judgment was based on what God loves, and what God hates.

God's Nature — What God Loves
What God Loves
The truth often comes in simple words. Our love grows as we walk with God. Why? Because that is his nature. “God is love” was John’s emphatic statement after having experienced a close personal relationship with the Creator. But can we discern what God loves?
As the Father of the family of believers, God loves his children. He has a plan for his family and they belong to Him. His fondest hope is that all those drawn by him into his family will choose to abide, or live with him. Why? So he can show them his love!
