John's Vision - Worthy is the Lamb
We have come to learn through John’s writings that Jesus Christ, the Messiah, was the Word, the Creator, the Son of God, and the Son of Man. But John the Baptist revealed that Jesus was also the ‘Lamb of God.’ But how did he get this title, and why is it important to understand that the Lamb of God is Jesus Christ? The book of Revelation penned by John gives us a detailed description of the Lamb of God and his roles in the Father’s step-by-step plan to save humanity.
John's Vision - Son of God Son of Man
John records in his epistle the first meeting of Jesus and Nathaniel. Responding to Jesus, Nathaniel exclaimed, “You are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!” Jesus, confirmed this and added that he was also the Son of Man. But what do these phrases mean? And how did the disciples and the religious leaders of Jesus’ time understand them? These names are at the heart of Jesus’ mission and his relationship with the Father. Jesus told his disciples that he came to give eternal life to those who would see his glory when he returned. But Jesus also knew that many would not accept the authority that the Father had given him, as Son of God Son of Man. Do you?

John's Vision - The Word of God - I AM
The apostle John wrote in the 90’s AD. This was long after all the other witnesses of Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection had died. He was dealing with a lot of confusion about the nature of God. So, he wrote about the Word of God to clarify things that had become obscured. John in rehearsing the words of Jesus made dogmatic statements that the Lord God of Israel, who was both seen and heard, could not have been God the Father. But, John was also emphatic in stating that the Word of God, who in the beginning was with God and was God, was the being who became flesh — Jesus Christ, the Messiah. Is this what you have been taught to believe?

John's Vision - Face to Face with God
How can we reconcile the accounts of John with those of Moses?
John tells us that Jesus told his disciples that he had come to reveal the Father, the being the world had not known until that point when Jesus Christ came into the world as a human being. So does John also clarify for the believer, the question of who was the Lord God of Israel? Can we know who covenanted with Israel to be their God through Moses as mediator? John gives us many clues to consider.

Reformation - Passionate About Biblical Values
The Protestant Reformation is 500 years old now, but what has been the effect on Christian “morality?” Has the “faith once delivered” been restored, and have the ancient paths been re-established? God tells us that he acts on behalf of those who trust him and do good. But the reality of our Christian religious world does not seem to reflect the ideals of sola scriptura…living by every word of God. And many of our religious leaders, like those in the time of Jeremiah, or John, are merely interested in offering soothing platitudes. They deceitfully proclaim, “peace,” when there is no peace. So how can we expect God’s blessing?

Reformation - Dealing with Oppressive Government
The oppressive government of Luther's time with its religious partner learned that trying to kill the messenger did not solve their problem. In fact, the “danger, disaster, and desolations” that Luther had predicted were some of the unintended consequences of the failed attempt at censorship by the state. Luther understood that the real power was in God’s hands, and even the greatest of kings, pharaohs, or potentates could be removed by God at any time. He had seen the inconsistencies in the Papacy and religious and civil councils and therefore, he could no longer submit to their rule over his life. So he gave a powerful witness to all the people present at his trial, and his legacy remains alive today. Luther’s insistence on the principle of sola scriptura continues to be instructive. For as Luther concluded it is only evidence from scripture that can change our stance on an issue of Christian duty. It is neither safe nor honest for Christians to speak against their conscience, for ‘if it is not of faith it is sin.’

Reformation and the Salvation Equation - Was Luther Right?
Five Hundred Years Ago
In 1517 Martin Luther posted his 95 theses in Wittenberg, decrying some of the abuses within the Catholic church. But it took a few years for him to get to the point of calling the Pope, the “Anti-Christ,” and throwing away the need for the Catholic sacraments. During this time Luther was developing his idea about “justification through faith alone.” He said he based his new understanding on scripture alone, “sola scriptura.” But did he? Luther had concluded that because we were freely justified (made right with God) through grace, that all we needed was faith. This fit neatly with his background as an Augustinian friar, as it built on Augustine’s idea of predestination. So Luther’s salvation equation was Faith + 0 = Salvation. No “works” were needed. But was Luther right?

Reformation - Luther, Faith and Good Works
Luther’s Legacy
There has long been contention in the Christian world concerning the relationship between faith and good works. Over 500 years ago in late October, Martin Luther, opened up this “can of worms” in the fall of 1517. He had posted his 95 Thesis on the Wittenberg church door in the hopes of stimulating intellectual debate. But 4 years later at the “Diet of Worms” he found himself fighting for his life over the questions he had raised.

Reformation - Luther and Jehu, a Legacy of Unfinished Reformations
Martin Luther’s debate with the Catholic Church was initially an attempt to make reforms within that Church. But over several years of accusation and counter-accusation, Luther refined his theology, ultimately, rejecting Papal authority. Facing a death penalty at the “Diet of Worms” trial in 1521, Luther remained staunchly committed to his own understanding of “sola scriptura.” Luther’s reformation began to sow the seeds that produced the Protestant Reformation. But there have been other reformers in the history of the people of God. Consider Jehu as an earlier example.

Reformation - 500th Anniversary - What Have We Learned?
Some would say 1517 was the beginning of the Reformation, the time when Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the door in Wittenberg. Others would look to 1521 when Luther stood on trial for his life and gave his defence at the Diet of Worms. But the important reality is that those events 500 years ago are still having an impact today.
Martin Luther in his conflict with the Catholic hierarchy, began a reformation that popularized the phrase, “Sola scriptura,” by scripture alone. And yet his life and example did not fully reflect his words. His intent may have been to “renovate” the Catholic church by removing superstition and ignorance, and aligning their practices more closely with scripture. But, history reveals the cracks in the church facade were more than cosmetic. And the results of Luther’s 95 Theses on the Wittenberg Church door was neither freedom nor unity for Christians.

Worship in Truth
When we worship God does it matter how and when we do it? Can we create our own traditions and worship God according to the dictates of our heart? Or is there more to worshipping in spirit and in truth than may be easily apparent in our world of competing worship traditions. How do we worship in truth? Let the scriptures teach you what God has in mind.

Spiritual Warfare - Shield of Faith to Quench the Darts of Doubt
Spiritual Battle, Deception, and Ethnic Strife
Are you prepared to quench the fiery darts that the Adversary sends your way? When Christ’s disciples asked him about his return and the signs of his coming, he gave a warning. He told them to be careful, so they would not be deceived. They had to walk a straight path in a crooked world. The society would attempt to mislead them, entice them into error, and cause them to deviate from God’s path.

Spiritual Warfare - Breastplate of Righteousness
In our spiritual battle, knowing and doing what is right gives us confidence to stand and face our accuser. We can face our adversary knowing that our actions and motives are pure. Doing what is right will protect our heart from the emotional arrows and barbs hurled at us. Because we know we are in a right relationship with our Father and have trust that he will protect our back. What is right from God's perspective?

Spiritual Warfare - Helmet of Salvation
Fighting the Mind Worms
Everyone who believes Christ’s message is engaged in spiritual warfare. Yet, too many Christians are losing the battle by playing old worn-out scripts in their heads. They have developed a negative mindset, and constantly their thoughts replay familiar refrains. And these messages, the “I will nevers” prove to be a stumbling block to spiritual engagement. When the mind worms of “I will never succeed” or “I will never change”, or “I will never measure up” or “I can never leave the past behind” start gnawing at us, do we have a strategy to combat them? Are we able to put on the helmet of salvation and overcome our cultural scripts, negative mindsets, and destructive thoughts? Paul gave us some advice in fighting these spiritual battles. He knew the source of the power to beat back the ugly, discouraging thoughts that sometimes seem to overwhelm us.

Spiritual Warfare - Sword of the Spirit
Are we prepared to meet the challenges of our generation with the sword of the spirit? The apostle Paul knew from personal experience the need to resist and stand your ground in the evil day. Whether dealing with rioters or facing incarceration based on false charges, Paul was prepared for spiritual battle. He advised the brethren to put on the armour that God provided. God’s armour would help them meet their daily challenges.
It was daunting at times to live as followers of Christ in a pagan society. They were constantly in conflict with the cultural norms of their time. They understood that there is a spiritual battle to be fought daily. So besides the defensive armour of breastplate, helmet, and shield, God provides our one offensive weapon. Are we making a daily effort to take the sword of the spirit that God is offering us?

Spiritual Warfare - Disciples with a Mission
As followers of Jesus Christ, disciples know the master’s voice. They have an intimate relationship with the master, having known that he was willing to offer his life for them. They know that he hears and listens to their concerns. And, as a result, they are willing to walk the path he has set out for them. Disciples have trust in their master, not only for direction in the spiritual warfare in this life, but in his promise of eternal life. Like master, like disciple, those who embraced their mission have the hope of being resurrected in the same likeness as their master. Are we following in our masters 'sandals?'

Spiritual Warfare - Gird with Truth
Are We Prepared for Battle?
Our spiritual enemy is powerful and relentless, so scripture tells us that we need to gird our loins with truth. Jesus having done battle with the Adversary, knew we needed to stay alert and be prepared. In his final prayer before his crucifixion, Jesus asked the Father to protect the disciples from the evil one. They had to live in a world under the sway of this enemy, but they would not belong to his world. They were a part of the Father’s Kingdom and could rely on his help to do spiritual battle. Jesus in his example prayer reminded us to pray that the Father would rescue us from the evil one, the Father would not fail to do his part. So are we preparing and doing our part?

Spiritual Warfare - Being Forewarned is Forearmed
Forewarned is Forearmed
It has been challenging to be a Christian in every age ! Do we have the armour of God to help us? We live in a world that, as Paul said, has been enslaved to a dark lord for millennia. John’s writings in the book of Revelation envisioned a future age, our age. There will come a time in which a great evil power will control the whole world and deceive its inhabitants. And yet, there was hope, because Christ will return and his kingdom will finally be established. And how will the evil empire be defeated? By the blood of the Lamb, Jesus the Messiah, and the sacrifice of those who had sworn allegiance to him. God will have his Christian soldiers, but their warfare is not on the battlefield. Are you God's warrior?

Spiritual Warfare - A Christian's Rules for Warfare
Representatives of a New Cosmos
As Christians, our King, tells us that we are his Ambassadors, and therefore resident aliens in the societies in which we live. We are to be prepared, fully aware of the rules for spiritual warfare. It is our responsibility to live in this world and yet not be ‘of it,’ in our role of ambassadors to the world. Our mission is to stand for the truth of God as faithful representatives of God’s kingdom, that heavenly city that Abraham envisioned. We have been sent into this world order (cosmos), to prepare for another world order, that will be established when Christ, our King, returns. So what are Christ’s rules of spiritual warfare, that we should keep in mind at all times?
