Within the first 10 seconds of this video you will see a cat put a paw into the entrance hole of the nest. This week we've had magpies, woodpeckers, starlings and now cats try and get into the nest. When will it end?.
Fortunately the cat failed and with assistance from it's owner we've put up a chicken wire 'umbrella' below the nest to stop any more feline adventures. What's next? Locusts?
Our fears from yesterday were confirmed at 4.59am when our female removed another expired chick from the nest. This leaves us with three surviving chicks. If we didn't have bad luck we wouldn't have any luck at all. Did the fact that the chicks hatching was spread out over almost 4 days have something to do with the relatively low survival rate or has it been the last week's atrocious weather? People smarter than I might have answers to that.
The remaining chicks seems strong, alert and full of energy. The parents have been feeding all three throughout the day and into the evening at an impressive rate. Let's hope that all of them make it through their last week in the nest and here's no further unwanted drama.

There's more than a bit of hesitation in saying the today was a good day because there is still a reminder of yesterday's mis-adventure in the nest. That doesn't seem to be bothering the occupants though.
It was a huge relief to see the parents return to the nest shortly after 5am this morning. Our hardworking male was first in, followed slightly later by the caterpillar catching female. The fact that they chose last night to be their first night away from the box only added to the worry from yesterday's drama. Thank you to those who commented to let us know that this shift in evening behaviour is entirely normal as the chicks approach the time to fledge. Admittedly the birds timing could have been better for those of a nervous disposition!
After another brief Starling appearance at 1:14 there was a collective sharp intake of breath on the livestream today when one of the chicks decided to follow in the footsteps of it's unfortunate sibling from yesterday and leave the safety of the nest cup for a bit of a walkabout. (1:35) This chick was much more steady on it's feet than yesterday's and dropped back into the cup without much of a problem.
After we had all recovered from that little fright there was a repeat performance later in the day just to make us all jittery again.(5:45)
Thanks to those who got in touch to share their similar nest box dramas. It's good to know that we're not alone in our trials and disappointments. It seems to be a less than stellar year for the Blue Tits in general.
Not long now until these two remaining chicks fledge. Let's see what the morning brings and thanks for sticking with us. Almost there.

29th May 2021 - Fledging Day, the short version - Blue tit nest box live camera

Our two chicks left the nest today. They started showing some interest in the entrance hole and took several little test flights within the box early in the morning and had us all excited about them fledging.
Things then calmed down for a few hours but after being fed one final in-box caterpillar each the chicks took their first journey into the outside world. As you'll see, there was the smallest of gaps between the first chick leaving and the second chick taking the plunge.
The chicks went directly into the cover of a nearby tree and the parents are continuing to feed them. They will do so for several weeks yet. The fledglings could still be heard but not seen. The parents continue to visit the bird feeder in the garden as well as catching live food for the chicks.
There will be an extended highlights version of this video available shortly. Huge thanks to all of you for following the journey of our blue tit family. By no means has it been plain sailing but hopefully you've found it to be worthwhile.

Livestream viewers might already know that today was an all-round bad experience. After what was a pretty good day one of the chicks escaped the from the cup of the nest and eventually got themselves stuck in the corner of the box. The parents won't feed a chick that isn't in the cup so by the time you read this it's highly unlikely that the chick has made it through the night.
On top of that the female chose tonight to be the first night away from the nest. To say that stress levels are high is an understatement.
The comments section of the livestream has been particularly hard to read tonight. People seem to forget that we edit between 15 and 16 hours of footage per day so we are much more attached to these birds and know them better than most viewers. To be accused of animal cruelty is a little hard to take after the amount of effort that has been spent feeding the birds, providing them with natural nesting materials, chasing away Magpies, Woodpeckers, Starlings and trying our hardest to Cat-proof the nest box! We are not watching the stream 24/7 as some think we should be. And no, the channel hasn't received a penny from YouTube.
Should the worst happen tomorrow, please have a little compassion to those that have been giving the birds the absolute best chance of success for the last 10 weeks.

This is a re-edited version of a previously posted video from last week.
There have been thousands of comments on the previous version asking what happens to the chicks which have died in the nest. They are not fed to the remaining chicks and no chicks were harmed by predators.
If you are considering showing this to young children please watch it by yourself first. Nature can be harsh.
If you haven't seen the Empty Nest to First Egg video you can find it here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7EPJE...
As you'll see, several of the chicks didn't survive to fledging. There was a cold snap in the UK during the nesting period which could have had a bearing on the matter and massively reduced the amount of caterpillars available as food. Rest assured that the bird feeders were (and still are) well stocked. Like minded people with bluetit nest boxes in the UK left comments saying many of their chicks also hadn't survived through to fledging this year either.
The chicks hatched over a four day period, usually this would only be a two day affair. The final chick to hatch on day 4 didn't stand much of a chance compared to its siblings which were already much larger after 2 or 3 days of being fed.
The sharper eyed amongst you might have noticed that there isn't a day 15 or 19 in the video. This was due to a recording failure and a computer meltdown. The camera and computer had been streaming 24/7 for two and a half months and started to fight back!
The parents continue to feed the chicks in and around the garden and the chicks have not returned to the nest box. This is absolutely normal.
The white fluff in the nest is Sheep's wool.

Hello folks! Here's the extended highlights of fledging day. You'll see all of the indoor test flights by the chicks and all the times they almost left the nest but decided that they weren't quite ready yet. From the first hop onto the entrance hole to actually leaving took around six hours. That's six hours that they kept everyone watching on the livestream waiting!
The chicks went for the safety of cover and flew to a nearby tree. They could still be heard but not seen. This seems to have caught out the male bird who had been away catching a caterpillar and returned to find an empty nest. He had to check the nest a lot of times before he put two and two together. For the rest of the afternoon the parents were on and off the bird feeder taking food to the chicks who remained hidden from view in a tree. They'll keep feeding the chicks for the next few weeks.
If you're actually reading this, chances are you've been along for a significant part of the journey. You'll know that there have been some big bumps along the way. As much as it may have fazed us it doesn't seemed to have affected any of the birds at all. As you would expect, it's apparent that they're much better equipped to deal with their adversity than we are.
Once the video editing elf has had a little break from going through 16 hours of footage each day we'll strap him down to a chair and get him to put together a little montage video which starts with an empty box and ends with today's different kind of empty box.
All that remains to be said is to thank you for watching and thank you for your supportive comments when things got a bit tricky at times. Hopefully you enjoyed your time with our Blue Tit family.

21st May 2021 - We lost a chick / another uninvited guest - Blue tit nest box live camera

What a bad day. No-one is entirely sure how many chicks are still in the box. There was five at the end of play on the 20th and now there's three or possibly four. The maximum number of chicks seen on camera at any one time today was four but that doesn't mean that there wasn't five in their. One chick was removed from the box at 7.58pm. We'll have to wait until the morning and see what's what. Hopefully it'll have stopped raining by then.
A third uninvited intruder gave us all a shock today (00:49). Especially our female. If anyone knows what type of bird this is please drop a comment and let us know. Our female was just about to give one of the chicks a big caterpillar when the interloper announced itself. It looks like she stress ate it afterwards!
In other news one of the chicks was having a good wing flap and they seem to enjoy an afternoon snooze so much the parents are having to pester them to eat.

15th May 2021 - Magpie attack thwarted! - Blue tit nest box live camera

We started the day with five chicks and at the time of writing we ended the day with five chicks so that's somewhat of a relief. The day was not without drama though. Unfortunately, a magpie has taken an interest in the nest box and was probably looking to snack on our chicks. As you'll see in the video (6:37) it gave them a hell of a fright. The hole is too small for a large bird such as a magpie and some of you may remember that it has a piece of metal protecting the hole so that bigger birds cannot peck their way in.
There's been a selection of insects brought in today and the parents seem to think that the chicks are ready for bigger food if their choices are anything to go by. Some of these are a bit on the too large side though.
More tomorrow...

From empty nest to first egg in less than 8 minutes! - BlueTit nest box live camera highlights 2021

Here's a little montage which takes us from an empty nest box to first egg. The British Trust for Ornithology has a BlueTit Diary page which sets out their nesting and breeding habits - https://www.bto.org/understanding-bir... - and states that usually blue tits spend between one and two weeks building their nest. Some even build their nest in only a few days. Our female took between 6 and 7 weeks! Such a perfectionist. It might go some way to explain why this nest was so deep!
BTW As of the 7th June the parents have been spotted still feeding the fledged chicks in the garden.

LOVING YOUR CAT
Are you a new cat owner? If so, there will come a point in time when your cat becomes “just like one of the kids.” However, until that time arrives, it is up to you to understand your cat and the small signals that he or she may be sharing with you.
As important as it is to hear that it will be your responsibility to understand your cat and decipher the signals that he or she may be sending you, you may be wondering why. Many pet owners often respond with something like “what the heck?” If you are a new pet owner or a first-time pet owner, you may not understand just how much your cat relies and depends on you.
As for why it is important to understand your cat, doing so can be important to his or her health. We humans are able to speak and seek medical attention when we develop a cold or suffer a debilitating injury. Pets, on the other hand, cannot do so. Just because your cat doesn’t outright tell you that she needs to go the vet, it doesn’t mean that a visit isn’t in order.
If you suspect that your cat is suffering from a medical problem, whether it be an injury or an illness, you will want to seek professional help right away. Schedule a visit with your veterinarian. The sooner you do so, the quicker you can understand what is bothering your cat. If you must make your cat’s appointment an emergency appointment, especially if he or she seems to be suffering.
Speaking of suffering, many new cat owners wonder how they can tell when their pet is feeling ill or has suffered an injury that may not be noticeable to the human eye. Whether you have only had your cat a week or five years, you should already start to notice habits that he or she has. These habits may include greeting you when you walk into a room or sleeping in the same spot. If these habits change, it may be due to an injury that is difficult to see or a medical illness.
In addition to knowing when your cat may be ill, understanding when your cat is hungry is also important. Some pet owners will always leave food out for their pets. This is doable; however, there may be some negative consequences. For instance, your cat may eat too much and develop an obesity problem. Bug and other rodents can be attracted to your pet’s food, especially wet canned food, regardless of how clean your home is.
For that reason, look for signs that your cat may be hungry. Many cats will approach their empty food dish and start to cry out. Others, may take steps to get human food or the food of other pets in the home. Of course, you also don’t have to let it get that far. Creating a set feeding schedule for your cat has a number of benefits.
Despite the fact that deciphering your cats every move may seem like an impossible task, it really isn’t. Although your cat will have his or her own distinctive attitudes, you may be surprised just how similar cats occasionally react like humans. When upset or frustrated, your cat may retreat to their own special spot. When hungry, your cat may call out for food. When your cat is excited, you should be able to tell right away, as he or she will likely be more active than usual.
The above mentioned reasons are just a few of the many why it is important for you to learn how to understand your cat. If you are looking for helpful tips, consider speaking to your veterinarian. There are also multiple book and online websites that are designed to help new pet owners develop a close and healthy relationship with their cats. Having an attentive and close relationship with your cat is the first step in understanding their wants and needs.
There is little doubt that the cat is one of the favorite domestic companions and one of only a handful of animals that typically are found within houses and living areas. The mystery that surrounds the cat has as much to do with myths and superstitions about the feline as it does with the independent and sometimes difficult to understand personality of the cat.
