Kip Attaway Interview on The Paul Leslie Hour
Are you here? Howdy! Welcome to The Paul Leslie Hour.
It’s our extreme pleasure to present this interview from the archives with Kip Attaway. This interview went out on the radio back in 2007 and since that it’s been sitting on a disc. It’s our pleasure to bring it out to you all on YouTube, Spotify, Apple, iHeartRadio, and everywhere else.
Kip Attaway is one of the artists who is not so easy to categorize. Some folks know him as an artist with a comedic side. His songs can be quite hysterical, and some songs could be considered offensive to some. He’s known for and has a cult following for his comedy, but many may overlook his tremendous songwriting.
Kip Attaway writes everything from ballads to up-tempo stuff in calypso, country-western, and even Hawaiian music. Some of his songs have been recorded by other artists and many have charted. Micky and the Motorcars recorded his song “Rock Springs to Cheyenne,” and what a fantastic tune that is.
You will not regret the chance to listen to all of Kip Attaway’s music, from the wild and crazy to the serious and pensive. He is not an artist you will forget. A good way to start is to join us for this look at his music and the man himself. This interview was taped at the legendary Spondivits II restaurant in Cumming, Georgia. The Cumming location has closed, but the original Spondivits in East Point is still thriving.

Roger Bartlett Interview on The Paul Leslie Hour
Are you here?
If I had a dollar to wager, I’d say that you’re here, *Pause* tuned into The Paul Leslie Hour!
We’ve got an interview with Roger Bartlett that originally went out on the radio. It’s been tucked since 2007, but now it’s a pleasure to bring this to you.
You’re about to hear your host Paul’s interview with songwriter and guitarist Roger Bartlett. Roger Bartlett is a solo artist and was also the front man for the band Hell’s Kitchen.
Oh, Roger was also the very first ever member of Jimmy Buffett’s Coral Reefer Band. Interesting, isn’t it?
Let’s have a little history lesson. Back in the beginning, Jimmy Buffett typically performed solo, then would sometimes have harmonicist Greg “Fingers” Taylor informally sit in.
Then in 1974, Buffett started his first official Coral Reefer Band…with just one other musician. Accompanying Buffett was Roger Bartlett on guitar. The next year, Buffett added Harry Dailey on bass, Philip Fajardo on drums, and Fingers Taylor on harmonica and keyboards. Since he was the first band member, Roger Bartlett is known as the original guitarist of Jimmy Buffett’s Coral Reefer Band.
We hope you enjoy this in-depth interview with Roger Bartlett. In addition to talking about the old days of Jimmy Buffett's Coral Reefer Band, he talked about his life in Manhattan. Roger talked about his songs, which have appeared in some unusual places, including the movie “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.”
Roger Barlett will tell you about his childhood in Louisiana, as the son of Ray Bartlett, famed radio host of the show “Groovey Boy, The Boogie Master.”
Before we begin the interview, we would like to invite you to please subscribe to Paul Leslie’s YouTube channel. It’s free and we've got dozens more interviews and reviews that will be added by the end of 2023. We thank you for subscribing! It helps us both.
And with that, there’s really only one thing left to do. Let’s begin the interview with Roger Bartlett.

The Enrico Macias Interview is featured on The Paul Leslie Hour.
Are you here?
Thank you for being here, wherever you are, we consider you to be here, because you’re listening to The Paul Leslie Hour.
All right, so we have an interview from our radio archives with an international legend. There was a bit of a thing here, a catch kind of. Enrico Macias is a French musical legend of Algerian Jewish descent. A singer, songwriter and recording artist, your Paul Edward Leslie first heard his music on an international flight. He knew that he wanted to try and interview this great international star.
So he goes through the appropriate contacts and soon enough Enrico Macias is calling in. Mr. Macias says to Paul, let’s do the interview in French. The catch we were talking about? Paul doesn’t speak French. Paul and Enrico eventually agreed, let’s try and do the interview you are about to hear in English.
There is a strong language barrier. However, we think it’s still worth listening.
You know we’ve got lots of content like this on YouTube. An Unbelievable variety of interviews is available on Paul Leslie’s YouTube channel. Won’t you subscribe? It’s fast and free to do so.

The Sam Arlen Interview on The Paul Leslie Hour
The Sam Arlen Interview is featured on The Paul Leslie Hour.
Are you here? Everyone who is here, continue to be…. here. Listening to The Paul Leslie Hour. Stay right here!
If you’re wondering what I’ve got for you, have no fear my friends. I’m going to tell you. This interview with Sam Arlen was recorded for the radio back in 2005. Sam Arlen is a saxophonist and the son of the late American composer Harold Arlen. Our featured guest Sam Arlen joined Paul to talk about the legacy of his father’s songs like “Over the Rainbow” “Stormy Weather” and “Paper Moon.” My goodness Harold Arlen composed some of the greatest songs ever.
Side note: This was a somewhat short phoner, also known as a telephone interview, and one of Paul’s early interviews. You may notice he seemed a bit green and it’s got that telephone sound.
It’s still a fascinating look at Harold Arlen. 2005 was the centennial…100 years since the great composer’s birth. Harold Arlen passed away in 1986, but tunes like “One for My Baby, and One More for the Road,” and “Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate the Positive” will be around forever.
If you can help us keep The Paul Leslie Hour going, you can continue listening to this show. It helps a lot, but we also rely on regular donations. Simply go here: http://www.thepaulleslie.com/support and we thank you.

Kodac Harrison Interview on The Paul Leslie Hour
Are you here? Eeeewwww, there’s a lot of you that are here. And what are you doing? You’re listening to The Paul Leslie Hour, of course.
We have something extra special for you today. This is undoubtedly the most in-depth interview Paul has ever done. He welcomed singer-songwriter - poet, spoken word artist and recording artist Kodac Harrison to come and give his entire story. The whole story… and to play music.
Kodac Harrison was described by Creative Loafing newspaper of Savannah, Georgia in this way: “Imagine a Southern Tom Waits or a rural Leonard Cohen. That's as close as we can come to a nut-shell description of the music of Kodac Harrison, a genuinely gifted artist and one of the southeast's musical treasures.” And to that we say, well stated!
Kodac Harrison was interviewed in great detail and also performed songs and spoken word poetry. This was recorded at Jordan (pronounced JER-Din) Digital Studios and then broadcast over the radio in a 4-part special.
Today, ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, we present the entirety of what went down that evening all in one place. By the way, you can be a supporter of spoken word and patron of independent media by going to thepaulleslie.com/support We thank all of you who help keep this show going. Julie Harkness Interview on The Paul Leslie Hour
Are you here? Oh c’mon, I’ll be 100 percent real with you. I already know you’re here. You’re here. And we love you for it. Thanks for tuning into another episode of The Paul Leslie Hour.
I want to tell you a little story since you’re here. This is about the interview you’re about to hear, that was broadcast on the radio and has been tucked away ever since.
This one goes way back, Paul was really green, just a rookie. A kid. He was recording this interview with Jules Harkness, also known as Julie Arnold, at a very luxurious hotel in Atlanta, Georgia. At the time Jules was dancing with Jimmy Buffett and the Coral Reefer Band. The much younger Paul was told what a kind, sweet woman Jules is. Very true.
Now, Paul was asked about this interview. and all he could do was tell the truth. Ya gotta tell the truth.
When Jules Harkness walked into the room to do the interview, Paul was struck by one fact. What a strikingly beautiful woman Mrs. Jules Harkness Arnold is. He forgot for a moment what he was there for. Psst, you’re at a hotel in Atlanta. About to do an interview!
In fact, he confided to his brotherly traveling confederate Jeff Pike that he had almost forgotten to breathe. That’s the truth, folks! We tell you this because we respect you. That’s the story and we’re stickin’ to it. Of course, Paul did his best to pretend it was business as usual.
Now, Jules Harkness, along with Heather Dee Perry were dancers for Jimmy Buffett’s Coral Reefer Band. Jules is also known as Julie Harkness Arnold. This interview focuses on the theme of dancing, and how Jules found her way into the Coral Reefer Band and auditioning for Jimmy Buffett. Oh yeah and life on the road with the Coral Reefers, and what it’s been like to dance in front of thousands.
Then there’s many other activities she is involved in: writing, charity, and her husband David A. Arnold’s TV and comedy career. David A. Arnold made one of the best comedy records ever, entitled “Cause I Gotta Go to Work in the Morning.” Paul loves that album.
Before we get into the interview, just remember that we’ve been going for 19 years and counting. We need more folks to subscribe to The Paul Leslie Hour on YouTube. Just go on there and it’ll keep you up to date whenever we do a new interview.
And now let’s take you to that interview with Julie Harkness Arnold recorded in Atlanta, Georgia. And Paul, see if Paul was breathing or not.
Wherever you are listening to this, we just want to say how much we appreciate you listening. God Bless and Keep You All.

John Lovell Interview on The Paul Leslie Hour
Are you here? I asked, but I already knew that you were! Whether you know it or not, you’re listening to The Paul Leslie Hour!
We’ve got an exciting interview from the archives with trumpeter John Lovell. Composer and trumpet player John Lovell’s musical career has had some very interesting chapters. Of course he’s got some jazz history and since April is Jazz Appreciation Month (JAM), we thought let’s get this John Lovell interview out there.
Now, John Lovell started playing trumpet at five years old, but professionally it all started with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra. Through the years he got to play with a lot of great acts: The O’Jays, Tony Bennett, Ben E. King, and Bob Hope.
When Paul caught up to talk with Johnny Martini Lovell, he was in Atlanta on one of the off days of the Jimmy Buffett tour. A lot of you know John Lovell has been performing with Jimmy Buffett and the Coral Reefer Band for more than 30 years…since 1992.
Hey, did you all hear that Jimmy Buffett is going to release a new album this September 2023? So far we hear the title of the record is going to be “Equal Strain on All Parts.” It’s going to have some really great talent on the album: Lennie Gallant and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band for starters. John Goodwin Second Interview on The Paul Leslie Hour
Are you here? What year is this? We’re kind of about to cross over, but then again - I don’t know when you’re tuning in. Glad you’re here listening to The Paul Leslie Hour.
This episode is extraordinary indeed, because it presents an interview and intimate “recorded live” and unplugged songs from Grammy-winning songwriter and visual artist John Goodwin.
Not long ago, Paul was texting with Charlie Bauer of the Key West Songwriters Festival about great songwriters. Paul recalled this session with John Goodwin recorded March 4, 2009 at a top recording studio in Nashville, Tennessee. The great David Brainard recorded and engineered. It went out on the radio, but it’s since been remixed to present what went down as authentically and naturally as possible. You’re about to hear it.
John Goodwin is also an exceptional painter. To check out some of his fine art go to goodwinartgallery.com John’s work is imaginative, off-beat and like any good art it gives you food for thought, and food for the spirit.

John Goodwin Third Interview on The Paul Leslie Hour
Are you here? Believe it or not, I already knew you were here. Believe me, I knew you had tuned in to The Paul Leslie Hour.
Would you believe Paul took a little four day trip to Nashville, Tennessee. You better believe it. One of the activities Paul found himself enjoying was having a burger and fries at Brown’s Diner. He said it was exceptional, maybe even unbelievable.
One of the highlights of the trip was to spend time with the clever, very witty John Goodwin. It made Paul recall this archival interview recorded telephonically many years back.
John Goodwin is really an incredible singer-songwriter. At the time of the interview, he had released his album entitled “Goodwin.” That unbelievable record featured a new direction for John with solo acoustic performances and duets with Jessica Andrews, Michael McDonald and Jeff Bridges.
John Goodwin is also a visual artist–a painter and photographer. Please check out goodwinartgallery.com to see some of his work.
Another interesting fact about John. His songs have been featured in several major motion pictures including Crazy Heart, Surf’s Up, The Amateurs, and Tideland.
We’d be so honored and pleased if you’d subscribe to Paul Leslie’s YouTube channel. We’re really trying to push the channel as it helps us in our pursuit of our mission. What mission is that? Helping people tell their stories. Please believe in us and subscribe.
Okay, let’s hear this third interview with John Goodwin from the archives. It’s got that kind of “telephone” sound to it, but you’ll be able to understand. Transcript is on the website for your convenience and reading pleasure.
Paul, I believe it’s time to start this one.

Are you here? Ladies and gentlemen, right here - it’s time now for The Paul Leslie Hour.
On this episode, we have a returning guest joining us. It’s a great honor that we welcome back America’s Songwriter: Jimmy Webb.
Jimmy Webb is one of the all-time greats. He is a singer-songwriter, composer, pianist, performing and recording artist. Webb is an inductee in the Songwriters Hall of Fame, the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame and is a recipient of the Songwriters Hall of Fame Johnny Mercer Award. On top of that, he’s one of Paul’s absolute favorite writers.
In his book Songwriters of Songwriting, Paul Zollo said this: “… A night with Jimmy at the keys is not unlike getting to hear George Gershwin or Cole Porter live. It’s hard to believe one guy could have written all these amazing songs…if you get a chance to see him live, grab it. People ask why nobody writes songs like they used to. Fortunately for us all, Jimmy Webb still does.”
Speaking of seeing Jimmy Webb live, you may be aware that he’s got 3 concert dates in late October in North Carolina - the 26th, the 28th and the 29th. Who’s going? Then, in early February he’s also got 2 dates in Florida. You can get more information and tickets at jimmywebb.com w-e-b-b

Maury Yeston Interview on The Paul Leslie Hour
Are you here? If you’re here, it’s obviously because you like to know stuff. It’s also possible you like to listen to people talking. In fact, on every single episode of The Paul Leslie Hour that there’s ever been has someone or another talking.
Your host Paul Leslie talks, the announcer, (that’s me) talks too. But the person who talks the most in every episode is the guest. Understandable. This time we present an interview from our library of interviews, with Maury Yeston. He’ll be talking.
Maury Yeston allows us into his musical mind! He is a composer, lyricist, educator, musicologist and Tony award-winner. Perhaps best known for his music and lyrics heard on the Broadway stage, Maury Yeston wrote the lyrics and melodies for “Nine,”(based on Fellini’s film 8½)as well as “Titanic.” He wrote the music and lyrics for “Phantom,” based on the 1910 novel “The Phantom of the Opera.” Yeston also wrote a great deal of songs for the Broadway musical “Grand Hotel.”
In addition to several original Broadway cast albums of his songs, a compilation album of his songs was released entitled “The Maury Yeston Songbook.” And it’s worth noting Broadway actress Laura Osnes released an entire album of his songs entitled “If I Tell You (Songs of Maury Yeston).”
If you are fascinated by the art of songwriting or a lover of musical theatre, this interview will be of great interest to you. Maury Yeston freely expresses his thoughts and recollections. Writers and lovers of songs alike will enjoy this fascinating interview.
Before we start the interview, we just want to thank all of you who have subscribed to Paul Leslie’s YouTube channel. Slowly, but surely it’s growing. Won’t you subscribe? It’s the best way to stay plugged in to the show.
And now, it’s time we played the interview with the unforgettable Maury Yeston!

We’ve got something special for you. You’re about to hear an interview with Mary Harris of Tin Drum and Ambrosia fame. Mary Harris is a stellar singer and keyboardist. Tin Drum is a wonderful family band featuring husband and wife Burleigh Drummond and Mary Harris.
You may remember that interview we played end of 2021 with Miss Tina Gullickson. She mentioned she got the gig of singing backup with Jimmy Buffett through Mary Harris. Same Mary Harris. Yep, that’s our lady here. Mary Harris was a singer and vocal arranged with Jimmy Buffett back in the 1990s.
By the way, big thanks to Jimmy Buffett and his team for sharing our interview with Tina. Hats off to Mr. Buffett.
