Catamaran Tiki 26 - New Lifestyle
At the building time, I hadn’t really anticipated what a catamaran would bring to my lifestyle. Now, the catamaran has been at the same port for ten years. Even if I don’t go down for a whole winter, I definitely go in the spring time. If nothing else, it has to be checked if any water has been blown into the hulls or under the cover. Everything needs to be carefully wiped and dried out. If you leave water in a covered space unattended in the spring time when the sun is gaining strength, you will be surprised by a lot of mould in the cabins at your next visit.

Laminate Wood with a Heavy Rowing
Matjaž started his work using a little bit different method. First, he opened out a cardboard, on which he put 1000 grams of unfolded fabric, then he coated it all in epoxy. Using this technique, he managed to add layer upon layer of fabric, well impregnated with epoxy. At the end, he soaked a huge chunk of mate.

Sailing Big Waves
My family, neighbors and several friends helped me to build the catamaran. It would not be finished so soon and that smoothly without them. The whole process of building took us six months, approximately 2000 work hours. We spend about 25k to full equiped boat. Not cheap and also not expensive.

Inflatable Kayak can be Perfect Dinghy
Few years we sailed without a dinghy and swam to shore when anchored. This is doable while the weather is hot. But as it gets colder, it becomes uncomfortable.
This is why I thought about a new dinghy. I want a boat I can store in the trunk of a car. It has to be light enough for me to carry it myself. I want to sail the sea, rivers, and lakes. The most appropriate choice is an inflatable kayak. It is light and quite maneuverable in water.

The Best Crew Sailing
Listen to the captain: Best crew is female crew. Definitely!
10 people on board Wharram Tiki 26. There is still plenty of room. Gulf of Trieste is enough big for that hot crew, too.

Building the model of the Tiki 26
The usual order in which the hobby builders first create a model and then the right boat, was turned upside down with me. First I did the boat and after quite a few years went on to model in a 1:20 scale. I gave this rough model to a friend, who invented a new sails and needed a model, after the will to complete it was ran out.

Lowering the Sails in Real Time
The video was shot in early October in the Gulf of Trieste. It was a beautiful day. We sailed from Piran (Slovenia) to Monfalcone (Italy) and anchored under the Duino Castle.

DIY Catamaran - Building and Cruising
The most I was wondering how can an amateur that knows nothing about building boats can build a DIY catamaran. Probably it was because of this question that the majority never thinks of DIY. Well, it was not difficult, I just started and somehow it went.

Tiki 26 Interiors and Modifications
It has been five years since the launch. Catamaran was dismantled. All constituent parts had to be colored again. And several things that were done improperly or superficially needed to be fixed or made in a different way. Therefore we spent our holidays ashore this year. We encamped for 30 days on the hot asphalt at the Yachting Center in the town of Izola.

Catamaran is held together only by the ropes
Just like any other sail boat, Arki uses alot of rope. This barely 8 metre long catamaran is equipped with half kilometre of different types of rope. Halyard is made of dynamic 10 mm thick rope, hoists are made out of rope that does not bend or get twisted, mooring ropes are 25 mm thick, they aren't knitted the classic way, but are twisted and very elastic. For trampolines, we use plain knit ropes. The most special ropes are used for tying the hull.
Yes, you heard it right, for tying the hull!

Catamaran Ariki is 13 Years Old
Catamaran Ariki is 13 years old. The last scheduled repair was 5 years ago. Cracks and flaws in the wood were mostly all removed. Catamaran was ashore for a whole month. Repair proved to be a hard work, boat was ashore and sitting on hot alsphalt in august, the hottest month of the year.
Two years ago we also docked here, in Izola shipyard. For two days we docked onto a floating dock, took down the mast and repainted it. Emil was operating the crane. He is the one accompanying us, ever since we came here, to Izola shipyard, 13 years ago.
Today here is Emil's co-worker Matjaž. Emil is on holiday. Despite his age, he is still avid surfer. They make interesting team: Crane operator Matjaž is lifting captain Matjaž and Ariki, who Emil jokingly likes to call »the fastest paddle boat of Adriatic.« from the water.

Building Tiki 26 in 180 Days
The most I was wondering how can an amateur that knows nothing about building boats can build a DIY catamaran. Probably it was because of this question that the majority never thinks of DIY. Well, it was not difficult, I just started and somehow it went. The constructor adapted plans to be easy-to-read for those that have no clue what DIY means in the first place (DIY = do it yourself).
The DIY construction plan is actually a comic book including all of the instructions on how to use tools and materials. It is meant as a construction of playwood, wood and epoxy. So the boat is easy, flexible and strong.

Tiki 26 Catamaran Underwater Hull Modification
Already in the beginning, when Ariki came into water, we could not balance it. A experience sailor Jure Sterk said to me that I should fill the empty space between skegs and the hulls. This solution was clearly pointed to according to the sailmaker’s calculation. Although I was afraid that the awkward catamaran would become even “clumsier”, we went back to work.

1000 miles of Adriatic Sea
1000 miles of Adriatic Sea (Slovenia - Italy - Croatia) without an autopilot. I sailed like they used to sail in the old days. Hours and hours on a bench with a steering in my hand. It was nice no matter if the sun was burning, if the moon was shining, or a storm was raging.
