History of the Canadian Shooting Sports Association The Canadian Shooting Sports Association was created in 2000 by the union of the Ontario Smallbore Federation and the Ontario Handgun Association. The leaders of these two organizations realized the necessity of creating a large representative body in order to better promote and protect the shooting sports in Canada. The launch of the new organization, along with new printed material, magazine and philosophy, has been a great success. The membership is rising and the Association has the potential to unite the recreational firearms community across the country. Most firearms owners have recognized the principle of safety in numbers but are unable or unwilling to apply those principles. There are approximately 1.25 million firearms owners in Ontario and approximately 3 – 7 million in Canada. Given these numbers, it is obvious that firearms owners have not found alternatives by joining other organizations. Statistically, very few firearms owners belong to ANY organization at all. A huge potential exists within the firearms community for a large, powerful organization with established credibility, analogous with the largest organizations present in the United States. Such a move, taken on behalf of the firearms community, would help ensure the protection of the shooting sports for generations to come and could wield the necessary wherewithal to change Canadian public opinion

Lynda Kiejko comes from a shooting family with a great Olympic legacy. Her late father Bill Hare competed at the Tokyo 1964, Mexico City 1968 and Munich 1972 Olympic Games. Her sister Dorothy Ludwig became an Olympian at London 2012 after competing at the 2007 and 2011 Pan Am Games. They competed together at the 2010 and 2014 Commonwealth Games, creating a moment to remember in 2010 when the sisters won bronze in the 10m air pistol pair event. Kiejko made her own Olympic debut at Rio 2016 where she competed in the 10m air pistol and 25m pistol events. Kiejko has three Pan Am Games medals to her credit, winning double gold in the 10m air pistol and 25m pistol at Toronto 2015 following her 10m air pistol bronze at Santo Domingo 2003. She had started 2015 with a career-high result on the ISSF World Cup circuit, finishing sixth in the 10m air pistol in Changwon. She achieved a career highlight in 2014 when she won the national title in the 10m air pistol just one month after giving birth. She also competed at her first ISSF World Championship since 2006 and cracked the top-five in the 10m air pistol at the Continental American Championships. Kiejko experienced one of her proudest moments when she won 10m air pistol gold at the 2018 Continental American Championships. By being present in the moment, she had what she calls the “perfect match” to secure an Olympic spot for Canada for Tokyo 2020. After giving birth to her third child in September 2019, Kiejko competed at the national trials just four months later and claimed that Olympic spot for herself. She would also compete in the 25m pistol at Tokyo 2020.

43RD PARLIAMENT, 1ST SESSION HANSARD • No. 029 Wednesday, March 11, 2020 STATEMENTS BY MEMBERS Mr. Blaine Calkins (Red Deer – Lacombe, CPC): "Mr. Speaker, I rise today to pay tribute and express our sincerest condolences on the passing of Pete Snelson, a champion for freedom and liberty, as well as a regional director for the Canadian Shooting Sports Association. I had the honour of getting to know Pete through the CSSA. Pete was a veteran. He suffered with PTSD for over 30 years, and tirelessly fought for better treatment for our veterans who also suffer from the mental anguish that too often accompanies military service. In his honour, the CSSA has created two scholarships that will be handed out to winners of the “Peter Snelson Memorial Essay Contest”. This is a fitting tribute to a man who dedicated his intelligence, creativity and energy to coming up with solutions to advance liberty and freedom. I want to extend our sincerest condolences to his mother, Mariette, his sister, Kathryn, to members of the CSSA, and to all his friends and family. Rest in Peace, Pete. You will be dearly missed.
