It has been rainy here for a couple of weeks, and I have neither been eating healthy, nor getting outside. At the same time, I hadn't been feeling very well. So, about a week ago, I started trying to get sunlight every day, and eating more fruits and veggies. I almost immediately started feeling better. This is a powerful anecdote which goes along with research I've been doing on strengthening your immune system, particularly in the context of COVID. But at the same time, this is a massive data set, and a clear, huge difference in outcomes. Put in the context of other studies about obesity, and vitamin D deficiency as comorbidities, it seems clear that there are many things to do to improve outcomes in this pandemic. One correction: I say that Ivermectin helps with Vitamin D uptake, but I can't find a source for that, now. These countries are doing literally 10-100 times better than highly vaccinated countries like Israel, the UK and the USA. I am not sure what the difference is, but clearly, it is more effective than vaccinations and lockdowns. I suspect the difference is eating fresh fruits and veggies while exercising outside. I don't believe in government mandates of any sort, but before mandating vaccines, how about we mandate exercise and vegetables? How about instead of lockdowns, we have anti-lockdowns, where we encourage people to outside? I'm not joking, there is a strong statistical case to be made that these would be more effective than current policies in "developed" countries.

My neighbor is a nice retired electrician with many fruit trees on his property, especially oranges. As I was walking by the other day, he told me to come back and take a sack full of oranges, and today I took him up on his offer. On each of the dozen or so orange trees, there must be 100-300 oranges. Really an amazing wealth of fruit. He says he makes a jug of orange juice every day, with no sugar. Still, he has way more than he can eat, and gives away the excess to friends, family, and neighbors. It is great to be around such healthy and generous people. I love the community here in the mountains of Chiriqui!

It has recently been in the news that more than 20% of commercial sunscreens have carcinogenic ingredients. If you're like me, this isn't surprising, since many of the chemicals used in industrial products are under-studied, and not very trustworthy. Besides which, the industrial products come in plastic and generate lots of trash. So, what is a good, healthy and eco-friendly alternative? If you get sunburns, you may already know that Aloe Vera is a great treatment for healing skin injuries like burns. You may not know, like I didn't until recently, that it is also an effective sunscreen! What's more, it is an incredibly easy to grow plant. It grows happily in pots, in any climate, and is very hard to kill. As a succulent, it only needs to be watered about once a month, and it makes babies on it's own. If you have any skin issues at all, I highly recommend raw aloe. It is anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and is rich in Vitamin E, which promotes new, healthy skin growth. I use it daily for my dermatitis, but you can use it as a lotion, sunscreen, burn treatment, acne and dandruff treatment, and more. What are you waiting for? What are you buying plastic, carcinogenic crap for? Just grow some aloe and put it on your skin, right now.

Today I found out about cleanplanet.io and decided to do another garbage cleaning on the mountain. I do this every few months, as it builds up from people visiting the river. Luckily there was less today, probably because it is wet season. I took a quick dip in the river to rinse off in the middle, before hiking back up the mountain with a bag full of garbage. Retirement is not black and white, and you should not think about it in terms of a monetary goal. Think about how you can produce for yourself the things that you want, and need. If you want organic, free range eggs, get a chicken and treat it that way. If you want clean energy, get solar panels. Own the means of producing the lifestyle you want. Every year, as you produce more of the things you consume, you will need to spend less money acquiring them on the market. This will free up your resources in a progressive manner, allowing you to save more and more, and/or work less and less. Furthermore, it is not healthy to spend all of your time in leisure activities. This is a path to diseases like dementia. Many retired people take up hobbies like gardening to entertain themselves, and keep up their health. Why wait until you're retired? Start doing these things now, and retire progressively. Before long, you'll be producing almost everything you need, and you'll be living a healthy lifestyle of diverse activities. Demonetize your thinking, and demonetize your life. I went for a long hike today after my regular workout, and hit four waterfalls! I tried taking a shortcut and scrambled over a rock slide between number 3 and 4. Just some happy chickens chowing down on cow poop. Yes, this is natural behavior. They eat undigested seeds, bugs, and lots of other stuff. It is good for them, and they love it! The chickens are wet, which is why their feathers look like that. Rainy day.

It's been foggy and rainy, so I haven't been filming my walks. Today, however, I thought, I'd just give some candidate "cloud rain forest" shots! This is what it is like about half of the days in the year. On today's walk I visited my favorite tree on the mountain. There is a seasonal stream running behind it, which was a nice surprise.

After a long weekend away, visiting Ingrid, I came back to mountain paradise in Chiriqui. Unfortunately, when I arrived last night, only two out of five chickens were sleeping in their roost, and this morning I saw none. Our chickens are all hens, since our rooster got sick and I had to cull him. Ever since then, and truth be told before, the hens have been in love with the neighbor's rooster. He comes over most days to check on them, and sometimes they go over to his yard. So, naturally, that was the first place I looked. Unfortunately, the neighbor had only seen two of our hens. I saw those two, but couldn't catch them between the open spaces and wire fences. Some of our vegetables had gone bad over the weekend, though, so I took those out to the compost, in the hopes that the chickens would come and eat it. The important thing is to get them to sleep in their roost, and then they'll come back the next day. At sunset, three (another came back after filming) chickens came back for the compost, but not the other two. Will have to go look for them tomorrow, asking more neighbors.

I went away for a long weekend, and left a big bag of food for Latte, our cat. She ate 80% of it, and went from fit to fat. Still, she's active, and will work it off fast, climbing over our fence and hunting for half of her food from now on.
