Philip E. J. Monson: Christian Identity to Serpent's Seed
Philip E. J. Monson was the President and founder of the Covenant Evangelistic Association, the Kingdom Bible College, and the Zion Press, evangelical organizations devoted to spreading British Israelism. He was the great-great-grandson of the second Baron Monson and related to the ninth Baron Augustus Debonnaire John Monson and Sir Edmund John Monson, British minister to Mexico. His grandfather and great-grandfather were Episcopal ministers, and his great-uncle was a chaplain to Queen Victoria.
When Howard Rand's Anglo-Saxon Federation of America organized a branch in California in 1930, Philip Monson was appointed the California State Secretary. That same year, Monson established his Kingdom Bible College in Los Angeles. He frequently held free "Bible classes" promoting British Israelism under the auspices of the Anglo-Saxon Federation of America. Key figures in the British Israelism/Christian Identity movements, such as Wesley A. Swift, attended Monson's school and lectures. By the end of 1930, Monson was the Federation's district superintendent for the Pacific Coast, with authority over California, Nevada, Utah, Oregon, Washington, and Idaho.
In 1928, Philip Monson introduced the "two-seed" doctrine in the form of a thesis, which would later develop into Christian Identity/Serpent's Seed doctrine and movement. It was later republished in 1936 and again at the end of the 1930s. According to Monson, the biblical Cain and his lineage descended from Satan, while Abel and his lineage descended from the "pure blood stream." Wesley Swift would later popularize this doctrine in the Christian Identity movement, about the same time or shortly before William Branham popularized it in the Latter Rain Healing Revivals as his "Serpent's Seed Doctrine".

The Antisemitic Mystery of the Flying Saucer
One of the more obscure doctrines of Christian Identity overlooked by researchers is that of “flying saucers” as they relate to the Christian Religion. Early leaders in the Christian Identity movement such as Gerald L. K. Smith and Wesley Swift used the media frenzy as a tool to push their two-seed doctrine and claim that the “flying saucers” had a spiritual significance as it related to the End-of-Days.
Identity believed that a pre-agamic race existed and that the “sons of god” taking the “daughters of man” from Genesis 6:2 was a clear representation of the two bloodlines mixing. This, according to Identity, was the reason interracial marriages were an abomination before God. Part of this theology included the notion that a spiritual existence of the “sons of god” predated the Adam race on earth, and the war between the forces of good and evil had now spread to the skies above the United States. According to Michael Barkun’s Religion and the Racist Right: The Origins of the Christian Identity Movement, this theology began to emerge in the mid 1940s and circulated widely in the 1950s largely due to Swift.
All elements of that doctrine, from the pre-agamic race to the flying saucers to the battles between Satan and Michael that were now apparent in the skies as UFOs, were key concepts in Latter Rain. William Branham, as leader of the revival, taught that “another civilization” existed before Adam, and that UFOs were “investigating angels.” The doctrines were also reinforced by Gordon Lindsay, who published a number of books and articles on the subject of UFOs.

Gordon Lindsay Advertised Christian Identity?!?!
Researchers interested in the association between Gordon Lindsay’s Voice of Healing publications and William Branham’s connections to white supremacy often come to the conclusion that Lindsay’s connections can only be described as “guilt by association” and that he was unaware of the white supremacy agenda.
Strong questions about this conclusion, however, are raised due to the Voice of Healing’s October 1950 issue. In the October 1950 issue of The Voice of Healing, Lindsay published an article by Branham’s mentor, Roy E. Davis. Davis was the second-in-command of the 1915 Ku Klux Klan, the future Imperial Wizard of the Klan, and a very outspoken leader in white supremacy. Since the early 1920s, Davis was one of the most outspoken public figures in white supremacy, serving as a public debater and official spokesperson for the Klan, the “royal ambassador” for the Knights of the Flaming Sword, and more.
Davis’s letter, published by Gordon Lindsay after Lindsay began pushing Branham out of the organization, is very telling. Davis exposed Branham’s Life Story as a work of fiction, declaring himself to be the one who introduced Branham to Pentecostalism — while Branham fictitiously proclaimed that he was a “Baptist” whose tragic life story caused a Pentecostal conversion. Lindsay had no issue publishing Davis’s letter to expose Branham as a fraud but also had no issue with Davis advertising his own “divine healing” ministry. Simply put, Lindsay, as editor of The Voice of Healing, promoted the number one figure in white supremacy as the Christian Identity movement was becoming militant in the United States.

Re-Writing the Old Testament: British Israel Doctrine
The British Israel doctrine had a profound effect on fundamentalist Christian doctrine. Though many of its converts later abandoned the pseudo-archaeological, pseudo-Christian doctrine in later years, the changes to the interpretation of Scripture that developed through British Israelism remain in effect today within some Christian sects.
When British Israel leaders began claiming that the British Isles and North America were the descendants of Israel, they did so by comparing Old Testament passages to modern times. Key passages of text were turned into unlikely (and often absurd) parallels between the modern world and ancient Israel. No longer was the context of scripture important; passages were given new context using a few words from Hebrews 10:1 out of context: “Shadow of things to come.”
This is evident in early Pentecostal history. Key figures in Pentecostalism repurposed the book of Malachi for modern times, specifically the fourth chapter. Frank Sanford convinced his sect that he was the “Elijah” who came to restore the Church (or, more specifically, rebirth the Church as the "true" Israel. John Alexander Dowie did the same, and both men were given nicknames such as “Elijah the Restorer.” Pentecostal founder Charles Fox Parham visited both sects and later announced that he was this “Elijah” to come.
Without the British Israel doctrine and its method of re-writing the Old Testament to fit modern times, none of this would be possible. The book of Malachi was explicitly written “To Israel,” as is mentioned in the first verse of the first book. To British Israel converts, however, “To Israel” meant “To British Israel Converts.”

Apartheid : Latter Rain and British Israelism in South African Politics
In 2006, Nico Horn, professor in Human Rights and Law for the University of Zambia, published an article in the December issue of The Studies in Ecclesiastical History on the subject of Pentecostalism’s role in apartheid, the South African political system of segregation and discrimination on the grounds of race. Horn took notice of the political power held by Pentecostals in South Africa and, upon investigation, found that the intersection of the Second Wave of Pentecostalism and Apartheid during the decades from the 1950s to the 1980s was beyond coincidental.
When the British-Israel-inspired Latter Rain Movement began to spread into Africa, Pentecostals in South Africa began to adopt the themes of British Israelism and Christian Identity that flowed from the United States. Similar to the US version of the movement, the South African Pentecostals politically aligned against “communism” in apocalyptic themes while implementing racial segregation. It wasn’t until 1994 that the black churches began to integrate, and the AFM started to to unify itself with the black churches.
Horn established a timeline from the early Apostolic Faith Missions to Apartheid and noticed that Pentecostal leaders heavily influenced South African politics. Under the leadership of A. J. Schoeman and J. T. Du Plessis — Brother of “Mr. Pentecost David Du Plessis — the AFM had established a New Order, an unofficial group of young pastors focused on war and politics. During the 1950s, the most active years of Latter Rain, Pentecostal “empowerment” meant “state recognition, and Pentecostals were appointed as chaplains in the South African Defense Force. Wessels was very vocal in his support of the National Party, which promised (to an all-white electorate) that it would implement apartheid.

INSANITY! In the Healing Revivals!
Participants in the Latter Rain revivals of the late 1940s and 1950s recall seeing “evil spirits” cast out of people as they approached the “healers” on stage. This phrase, “evil spirits,” is critical to understanding the nature of the illness that attracted people to the revivals. While most afflictions in the revivals were given specific terms such as “bladder trouble,” “heart trouble,” “one leg shorter than the other,” and more, seldom were the named conditions categorized as “evil spirits.”
All types of Mental illness in the Latter Rain movement were typically categorized as an “evil spirit,” and the mental health condition was seldom named. It was very uncommon to hear a “healer” proclaim “healing” of “chronic depression,” “bipolar disorder,” “schizophrenia,” or other terms we hear today. Mental health education was taboo, and many mental health issues that people of today would recognize by name were not commonly named. Instead, terms such as “crazy,” “nuts,” or “loony” were used by the uneducated public. Those terms were insulting both then and now, but the label given to people suffering from mental health issues by the “divine healers” was much worse: “infested with an evil spirit.”
Gordon Lindsay, one of the most prolific figures in the healing revivals, moved mental health struggles out of the natural realm and into the spiritual in his literature. When William Branham had a mental health crisis in the late 1940s, Lindsay claimed that it was a result of the “kingdom of hell” attacking Branham. The response from Latter Rain participants was so overwhelming that Lindsay was forced to publish an explanation in the October 1948 issue of The Voice of Healing. Lindsay refused to call Branham’s condition an “illness” and instead responded that it was the result of “exhaustion.” He attempted to be more forthcoming in his book “20th Century Barnabas” by admitting that Branham did, in fact, have a nervous breakdown, but instead of classifying Branham’s condition as an illness, Lindsay spiritualized the struggle with mental health and claimed that Branham was later healed of his “evil spirits.” According to Lindsay, “In no sense was Brother Branham ill from a disease, but was in a state of nervous exhaustion.”
Branham’s “evil spirit,” however, remained until the end of his life. Branham admitted in November 1965, one month before his death, that he had been a neurotic all of his life. This was in direct conflict with his 1953 position. Like Lindsay, Branham claimed to have been healed from what Mayo Clinic declared him to be incurable: his mental health disorder. In the end, the “evil spirits” (unnamed mental health disorder) plagued Branham for the duration of the Post-WWII Healing Revival.
