I am a FIRM believer in the power of the "blankie"!! A blankie is a special security object that simply means, “comfort” to your child.
This is what your baby turns to in the middle of the night when he or she wakes up, as they often do, even for just brief moments in between sleep cycles.
If a baby is securely attached to their blankie or lovey, instead of crying out and needing mum or dad to comfort them back to sleep, they will find their beloved blankie, snuggle with it, sniff it, rub it on their face, and/or suck on it, and go back to sleep. 😴

Ahh YES. Despite many professionals claiming that teething doesn’t affect sleep or behaviour, I couldn’t disagree more. It all depends on the child, their age, temperament, which teeth, and how many are coming through. Like adults, we all have different pain thresholds and so do babies..

Naps on the go… Is it possible?? 🤷♂️This is something I get asked ALL the time. How do you get a baby to sleep well whilst you're out & about?
Well to be honest - YOU DON’T! 😜After 3 months of age, most babies will find it difficult to nap on the go and won’t sleep for long periods of time whilst out.
Does this mean you have to stay at home for EVERY nap?? “NO” defiantly not!! Longer naps typically happen at home in the cot, but it can also happen whilst out and about too!! 🙌

When it comes to sleep training your baby CAT NAPPING is by far one of the most talked-about problem with babies. 🙈 Whilst it’s totally normal for young babies to sleep just one sleep cycle or less this can become a habit in later months.
Catnapping can become more of an issue beyond 3 - 4 months, when the lack of sleep during the day causes frequent night wakings, and overall grumpy baby, & exhausted parents!
From 3 months onwards, your baby becomes ready for some consistency with routine, longer awake windows, & lengthier naps. It is not uncommon, however, for catnapping to continue well up to 5-6 months of age! Here are my top few tips for sleep training your baby & combatting the catnap (3 months onward):

This time of year can be tricky & if your child has all of a sudden started waking during the night or is up earlier then most likely because they are cold.
My Top Tips:
👉 Dress your child for the coldest part of the night (usually around 4 am)
👉 My recommendation: a singlet, a long-long onesie and a 2.5 tog sleeping bag along with a heater on from midnight if it's going to be under 10c outside.
👉 If you have a warm bubba….try putting them to bed with the fan or air conditioner on, then turn it off when you go to bed or before 10 pm. Those extra layers will make all the difference at 4 am!

SIGNS & SYMPTOMS:
Red cheeks
Red swollen gums
Dribbling/drooling
Chewing or biting… on everything
White buds visible in gums
Rash on face and/or chin
Nappy rash
Runny stools
More frequent bowel movements at all different times of the day (including nap times and in the middle of the night)
Increased clinginess, irritability, crying
Loss of appetite
Slight temperature
Pulling at ears
EFFECTS ON SLEEP:
General unsettledness or wakefulness at sleep times.
Catnapping or shorter sleeps than usual.
Difficulty settling at naps and bedtime.
Frequent waking in the hours immediately following bedtime.
Waking in the early hours and difficulty settling back to sleep.
Early rising.
Increased overnight waking – symptoms of teething and illness are usually worse toward the end of the day and overnight.
SOLUTIONS:
Be prepared to spend extra time sitting beside your child’s bed to help them to fall asleep or back to sleep when they may wake prematurely from naps or overnight.
Try to maintain a consistent day and night routine.
Teething rings/toys.
Baltic amber teething necklaces.
Edible teething rusks.
Cold fruit/frozen all-fruit icy poles or a cold face washer.
Your child may prefer soft, liquefied or pureed foods to solids.
Breastfeeding is natural pain relief.
Offer pain relief where necessary.
Optimise the sleep environment. (Elevating the mattress head slightly can reduce the pressure and discomfort from teething and congestion from colds – as opposed to lying flat.)

The last couple weeks my inbox has exploded with questions like "Why is my baby all of a sudden experiencing cat napping???"
Given the whole stay at home, self-isolation thing that's going on many parents are finding themselves struggling to get their baby or toddler to nap and nap well.
If your baby was previously a great napper and in the last week or so you have started to experience catnapping or protesting come nap time...it may be due to the fact they haven't built up enough sleep debt.
Prioritizing some movement, fresh air and a bit of brainwork in the morning can do wonders when it comes to preparing your child for nap time.
Given the situation we are all in, going out and stimulating our little ones has now become quite a difficult task, but It doesn’t have to be complicated.
Here are a few ideas...
👉 A living room dance party
👉 Go for a walk around
👉 Do a few puzzles
👉 Get out the pots & pans,
👉 Get out Tupperware containers & lids
👉 Get out a few cups & water for some water play
👉 Grab pegs for your little one to put into tissue boxes
👉 Add straws into a water bottle
👉 Do a toy swap with your mum friends
By increasing stimulation can help ensure your child is physically tired come nap time, which will increase the chance of your baby sleeping better and for longer.

Hunger plays one of the biggest contributing factors to babies not sleeping.
Babies & toddlers are very good at controlling their own calories, so that means the more you feed them during the day - the less they need overnight! If your in a situation where your baby is feeding every hour or two overnight…
You need to switch it up. Offer your baby milk every hour (or two) during the day over a 24-48hr period. And if that means waking them up to do that, then go for it.
Once your baby’s feeding is back on track, it’s important to have a structure with your daytime feeds. It's also imperative your baby is getting all the calories and nutrition they need during the day to avoid them waking too often overnight.
Simply put: More calories during the day - less at night!
If you have a baby between 6months - 18months it's imperative your baby is getting all the calories and nutrition they need during the day.
Otherwise, your baby is going to wake up hungry and no amount of settling will work. Make sure your baby is NOT hungry before a nap or isn’t due for a feed 30mins after falling asleep – I often advise to offer a “top-up” feed before a nap, to rule out hunger as a cause for catnapping. It may only be 60mls of formula or 5-6mins on the breast.
This is not an opportunity for your little one to drift off for a power nap. Keep it strictly business - 15-20mins before nap time offer your little one a feed in the living room with the TV on blinds open.
Ensure you keep bub awake. Once you have offered the top-up give it 5-10mins before taking him in for his nap.

Baby Naps on the go…Is it possible?? 🤷♂️
This is something I get asked ALL the time. How do you get a baby to nap well whilst you're out & about?
Well to be honest - YOU DON’T! 😜
After 3 months of age, most babies will find it difficult to nap on the go and won’t sleep for long periods of time whilst out. Does this mean you have to stay at home for EVERY nap?? “NO” defiantly not!!
Longer naps typically happen at home in the cot, but it can also whilst out and about too!! 🙌
What if:
🔹️You have older children and you need to do kindy/school drop off, pick up
🔹️You have an appointment you can’t reschedule
🔹️You are catching up with friends
🔹️Or you just decided to walk around Kmart!
This is life..... Sometimes baby naps are on the go.
If you know naps will be on the go, here are a few tips:
🔹️In the Pram: Don’t lay your baby down too early. Timing is everything. Only lay your little one down 5-10 minutes before “nap time”
1. Recline the pram, pull the hood down and use a breathable cover to cover the front of the pram - (this will reduce light and stimulation.)
2. Pop the white noise on
3. Give them the comforter and WALK!
4. If you try doing this too early (laying them down) you will blow your chance on getting them to sleep on the go.
🔹️If your baby does nap in the car - keep driving or pull up and catch up on some social media, as this will be your best chance in sneaking in a long nap.
🔹️Don’t expect your baby to transfer from car seat to cot. If it happens - Great! but it’s not expected once babies get past 5-6 months of age. 🙈
