This is a very common situation particular with newborn babies. However these is always something you can do to try and achieve an enjoyable car trip.
✔ Try offering a feed 10-15mins before leaving to ensure you baby isnt hungry
✔ For newborns try using a swaddle and "tuck" your baby in, as this replicates the snug and familar feeling of being the womb and will help keep bub calm.
✔ For newborns - Use “white noise” in the car - via your phone or through your bluetooth speaker
✔ Keep a special box of soft, safe car toys that you’ll use only in the car.
✔ Hang toys up for viewing - Place them just at arm’s reach so that your baby can bat at them from her seat.
✔ Experiment with different types of music in the car.
Some babies enjoy lullabies or music CDs made especially for young children; others surprise you by calming down as soon as you play one of your favorites. Some babies enjoy hearing Mum or Dad sing, more than anything else!
✔Practice with short, pleasant trips when your baby is in a good mood. It helps if someone can sit near them and keep them entertained. A few good experiences may help set a new pattern.
✔Hang a mirror - That way your baby can see you (and you can see your baby) while you are driving.
✔Put up a sunshade in the window - This can be helpful if you suspect that sunshine in your baby’s face may be a problem.
✔Try opening a window as fresh air and a nice breeze can be soothing.

This is one of the most asked questions I get in the Baby Sleep Magic Community...
Great news your baby can fall asleep independently. YAY!! This is step one done!
Step 2 is linking sleep cycles and will come with age, time, practice, and consistency.
For bubbas under 6mths and/or not 100% established on solids, I suggest you offer your baby a top-up of milk in the living room 15mins before nap time. This may increase your chance of a longer nap due to having a FULL tummy!!
If your baby is younger than 5 months of age, catnapping is developmentally normal! Lots of babies will cat nap until this age (sometimes older) despite all your best efforts. BUT this doesn’t mean you can’t help them to consolidate naps.
For babies, over 6 months old (younger if you're comfortable) you can always leave them for the full ’nap time' if they aren't crying. EG: if you put your baby down at 10 am and they wake at 10:30 try to leave them until 11 am. If given the opportunity they may go back to sleep.

When Do Toddlers Drop A Nap? with Chantal Murphy - Baby Sleep Magic

Most toddlers will show signs that they are ready to drop their nap between 2½ and 3 years of age. However, in the event your toddler is really resisting nap time I strongly suggest some Rest time, aka "Quiet time" 😉
Tell your toddler: "Were going to have quiet time, you don't have to have a sleep, but you do have to stay in your room quietly." 🤫
Here Are Some Tips To Help With This:
💜 To help get your toddler in their bedroom, aim for it to be fun..try a running race, or jumping competition or a piggy-back!
😁 Provide them with some quiet activities like books, puzzles etc
😍 Set clear and firm expectations with visual cues, so they know when quiet time will end. A #groclock is a great option!
For toddlers that skip nap time altogether but fall asleep in the late afternoon, I suggest allowing a "power nap" & waking them up after 15-20mins, otherwise you may have a child who won't be ready for bed until after 8pm.
There might be some pushback. That’s okay. BE CONSISTENT and they will adjust to this new part of their routine.
For older toddlers, an alternative option is to create a comfortable environment in the lounge room in the afternoon and pop on a TV program for 30-45mins, as this still counts as rest time!

How To Get Your Baby To Sleep Thru The Night | Baby Sleep Magic

There is no definitive time or stage of development for this to happen to your child, it just depends on your individual baby and situation.
It is possible for your child to sleep through the night from around six months of age provided that your baby is on track (growth-wise) and is capable of self-settling.
Your child waking up during the night is a normal process for all parents, especially for babies who have much shorter sleep cycles than adults. It is how you settle your baby to sleep through the day that will impact how they sleep overnight.
Here Are Some Tips That May Help!
🍼 Try to ensure that your baby is getting enough food (calories) during the day. If your baby is feeding ALL night long, it is time to swap it around. Offer regular feeds more often during the day and try to stretch out those night feeds to at least 4 hours apart, using your settling techniques in the meantime.
🔊 Optimise your child’s room environment by ensuring the room is DARK and white noise is on.
⏱ Follow an age-appropriate routine, this includes watching your baby's wake windows, an over-tired baby will not sleep well overnight. It is important to understand that sleep equals sleep, the better your child naps throughout the day, the better your nights will be.
🤒 Is your child warm enough? Ensure your baby is dressed for the coldest part of the night (usually around 2-5 am). Remember that babies and toddlers cannot use blankets, during the winter months in particular, they will need to be well layered.
😴 Self-Settling: Aim to put your baby to sleep drowsy (but awake) to encourage self-settling (avoid feeding, rocking, patting & holding to sleep). If your baby is being fed, rocked or patted to sleep, when they reach light sleep at the end of each sleep cycle, instead of your child just drifting through onto the next cycle independently, they wake looking for that same prop that got them off to sleep initially.

SHORT NAP CHECKLIST
✅ Is your baby's room environment primed for sleep...I’m talking DARK room, loud white noise & ensuring the room temp is between 19-22c
✅ Is your baby self settling at the start of the nap? Resettling is a skill your little one will master AFTER they can self settle at the beginning of their nap. Longer naps will come later and naturally with time, age and consistency.
✅ Is bub dozing off or even zoning out during their awake time? This can sometimes be enough to reduce their sleep pressure and cause them to protest at nap time and/or cat nap!
✅ Is your baby waking hungry? I’m a big fan of a top up feed before nap time to ensure your little one is full enough to stay asleep
✅ Are they following an age appropriate routine? Timing is the absolute key to getting great naps!

How To Get Your Baby To Sleep Thru The Night | Baby Sleep Magic

There is no definitive time or stage of development for this to happen to your child, it just depends on your individual baby and situation.
It is possible for your child to sleep through the night from around six months of age provided that your baby is on track (growth-wise) and is capable of self-settling.
Your child waking up during the night is a normal process for all parents, especially for babies who have much shorter sleep cycles than adults. It is how you settle your baby to sleep through the day that will impact how they sleep overnight.
Here Are Some Tips That May Help!
🍼 Try to ensure that your baby is getting enough food (calories) during the day. If your baby is feeding ALL night long, it is time to swap it around. Offer regular feeds more often during the day and try to stretch out those night feeds to at least 4 hours apart, using your settling techniques in the meantime.
🔊 Optimise your child’s room environment by ensuring the room is DARK and white noise is on.
⏱ Follow an age-appropriate routine, this includes watching your baby's wake windows, an over-tired baby will not sleep well overnight. It is important to understand that sleep equals sleep, the better your child naps throughout the day, the better your nights will be.
🤒 Is your child warm enough? Ensure your baby is dressed for the coldest part of the night (usually around 2-5 am). Remember that babies and toddlers cannot use blankets, during the winter months in particular, they will need to be well layered.
😴 Self-Settling: Aim to put your baby to sleep drowsy (but awake) to encourage self-settling (avoid feeding, rocking, patting & holding to sleep). If your baby is being fed, rocked or patted to sleep, when they reach light sleep at the end of each sleep cycle, instead of your child just drifting through onto the next cycle independently, they wake looking for that same prop that got them off to sleep initially.

Yep this is TRUE. Now I’m not saying in times like this your little ones sleep will be perfect, in actual fact its bound to take a hit and it is totally OK to offer extra comfort and meet their needs in these times (actually anyone who has worked with me knows, that's what I advocate).
