The relationship between parents and children is a delicate balance, particularly for Christians. Neither parents nor children are perfect, but it pleases the Lord when children obey their parents and fathers do not provoke and discourage their children. Although raising children according to God’s word does not guarantee they will grow up to have faith, God has a way of bring people back if He wants them. Paul's instructions to wives and husbands are not about inferiority, they are about order. God made Adam and Eve equal, before the fall; now we are living under the curse. God gave an order to all things, including gender roles. Through translation and several commentators, we can see that the role of the woman was not inferior to the role of the man or vice versa. Onesimus was a runaway slave when he was birthed into the kingdom by Paul. At Paul’s request, he was restored to a much better state. Similarly, we are slaves of the world, of the flesh, or of the devil, unprofitable to God until we subject ourselves to the better state of slavery to Christ. Paul’s instruction that slaves should obey their masters can be better understood after looking at how the book of Genesis describes slaves. Jesus has given us power of attorney to act on His behalf, using His name. So why have our prayers become powerless? Are we just uttering words when we finish our prayers, “in Jesus’ name”? Or are we understanding the power of what we’re tapping into? The difference between the two is quite radical. When we pray in our own strength and in our own flesh, we become powerless. But when we connect our thoughts in prayer with everything we know about Jesus and the actions He has already made good on, we can begin to tap into the power and exercise the authority we have in Jesus’ name. The slavery described in the Bible is not like the slavery of modern times. It is a product of fallen man. God did not ordain slavery, but He worked with it for a purpose. Jesus has given us power of attorney to act on His behalf, using His name. So why have our prayers become powerless? Are we just uttering words when we finish our prayers, “in Jesus’ name”? The peace of God should be understood as something that is separate and distinct from peace with God. Peace with God has a connection to our salvation. It is difficult to forgive others if we fail to understand how much God has forgiven us. Unwillingness to forgive others drives a wedge between us and God and begins to close off the channel of communication with Him. We must completely let go of the wrongs that were done against us, just as Christ forgave us. If we walk in the Spirit, we will be able to let go and forgive in time. Christ has broken down the barriers of the old dispensation, so now we have to learn to function as a society, in Christ. We are chosen, separated, and loved by God, so we must act like it. The goal for Christians is not to check off boxes on a list of sin you work at fixing. It’s not even trying to be a better person. All of these things are disdainful to God. Do not take the practical application of Colossians 3 out of context and turn it into legalism. Mortifying the flesh does not mean you can fix your problems through will-worship.
