Heart cypress, from the Bald Cypress tree, is truly a primitive American wood. Bald Cypress trees can grow more than a thousand years old and tower to heights of more than a 100 feet. Once commonly found in virgin stands along rivers and tidewater swamplands of the southeastern coastal plain, the finest cypress grew where the land was submerged most of the year. Cypress logs estimated by scientists to be at least 100,000 years old were unearthed in excavations for the Mayflower Hotel in Washington, D.C. Heart cypress was logged right along with the longleaf heart pine in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, though the forests were not clear-cut like the heart pine. Loggers cut around the circumference of the tree a year in advance of logging to allow the wood to lose part of its moisture so the logs would float. Because there was only about 2000 miles of railroad in the South by1850, loggers would hand cut the heart cypress trees and drag them by oxen or mule teams to the riverbanks. There they would lash the logs together and float the raft to downstream sawmills. Today the silvery trunks and fernlike leaves of the Bald Cypress still grace southern riverbanks. Some are 100 years old or more left from the previous century’s logging. Others still stand, dead but showing where they were marked and cut, but never brought down. Unfortunately, the wood from young cypress trees does not compare to the rich-toned heartwood of original-growth heart cypress. Through centuries of adaptation, Bald Cypress has developed an inherent resistance to destructive forces, including water and insects, not found in other woods. We met up With Amy Lamb of NativeHouse Photography in Lakeland, Florida recently to shoot the new Saunders, Ralston, Dantzler real estate office. The place is dripping with River-Recovered® heart pine and cypress supplied by Goodwin Heart Pine. To boot, the office is an adaptive use project, saving yet one more Florida cattle field. The building was originally designed by Gene Leedy, an architect known for unique features such as precast concrete and structural double T-beams. The remodeled building includes exposed original T-beams and an additional glass atrium on the front of the building. The new architectural design highlights its original signature features and adds modern flair. Marlon Lynn is the remodel architect and Gannon Olmbert of A&O Construction managed the build-out. The conference room features an antique Goodwin Heart Pine engineered floor, a River-Recovered® heart cypress live-edge slab table, and an incredible pecky cypress wall. A credenza along the wall also harbors a large screen monitor that raises and lowers down during meetings. The executive office features an antique Goodwin Heart Pine engineered floor and a stunning River-Recovered heart cypress waterfall slab desk. The high end of the waterfall raises and lowers with the push of a button. This one-of-a-kind piece was crafted by artisan, Clayton Kiddey of Against the Grain Custom Woodwork. The Sarasota Art Museum is a remarkable story of adaptive re-use and building material recycling. Housed in the old 1926 Sarasota High School building, it is a contemporary art museum in the Kunsthalle tradition and now a premier venue for revolving shows of contemporary art. Goodwin Company, pioneers of River-Recovered® heart pine and heart cypress, was recruited to participate in this adaptive re-use project by general contractor, Willis-Smith. The focus was to transform the second and third floors of the high school building by remodeling the boxy classroom space into two open concept exhibition halls. All of the heart pine joists from each floor were removed and replaced with steel joists. The design team envisioned recycling the beams and turning them into finished wood flooring. Willis-Smith contacted Goodwin and the rest is history. Goodwin Company cleaned the beams of all foreign objects, re-sawed the material into 1×6 lamellas and then milled it into 23,000 square feet of Precision Engineered heart pine flooring. What resulted was a magnificent story of adaptive re-use and building material recycling. “Goodwin Company is often specified for adaptive re-use projects because of our dedication to ensuring each and every piece of antique wood is carefully cleaned, sawn, and milled to the highest standards,” explains Carol Goodwin, President of Goodwin Company. “It was important to ensure this new modern space gave a nod to the heart pine that was so much a part of the building’s rich history.” The old Sarasota High School is a three-story building designed by architect Leo Elliott in the neo-gothic tradition. Behind the Sarasota Art Museum sits the modern Sarasota High School designed in 1959 by architect Paul Rudolph. Architecturally, the two buildings stand in stark contrast to one another. Several years ago, the circa 1926 building came up for sale and was under the threat of demolition.
