bdp 22
This project is a bit of a detour from my K5 work. Step one of my next big project, ( rebuilding the motor in the family vehicle) is breaking down the motor and cleaning everything. This is a 2000 Chevy suburban with 290k miles on the motor and lots of grime and sludge in the engine block. It has a loud lifter ticking when it’s cold and has been burning (and leaking) oil, and losing coolant pretty quickly as well.
In this video I've finished removing all the internal parts and spent all my time cleaning the engine block and all the parts I'll be reusing. Take a look at how clean it is at the end of this video compared to how it started.

Chevy suburban 4x4 motor rebuild part 1, bdp garage episode 21.
A quick look at the start of my next big project, which is rebuilding the motor in the family vehicle. This is a 2000 Chevy suburban with 290k miles on the motor. It has a loud lifter ticking when it’s cold and has been burning (and leaking) oil, and losing coolant pretty quickly as well.
I spent the weekend removing it from the engine bay and will record my progress over the next couple week as I tear it down, inspect the parts that are worn and then put it back together.

69-72 Chevy k5 Blazer 4x4 Tour - BDP Episode 20
I give a quick rundown of all the customizations I've done to my 1971 Chevy Blazer.
Here's some of the earlier videos about the body repairs and metal shaping I've been working on up until this point.

Fixing a wobbly 4x4 fender, bdp Garage Episode 19
I modified the rear wheel arch on my 1971 chevy K5 blazer to fit larger off road tires. So as I work on welding in the patched portion, I need to also find a way to keep it from wobbling around since the stock fender support was removed. I designed a very simple metal bracket, welded in place and secured it with a bolt on the lower roll cage support.

Window leaks when raining, replacing a rotten window sill. bdp garage episode 18
One of the reasons I started this channel came about from house much time I spend fixing things that break around the house. This repair is not in the garage but on the roof of the house. Our front door would get water dripping down from the door frame in heavy rain storms and so I suspected the window up above it was leaking and I was right! The lower sill plate was so rotten that the paint was about all that was holding it together. Check out how I went about repairing this window and stopping the water leak.

Beginner welding metal patch panel bdp 17
I'm finally at the point where I can weld on my custom shaped patch panel to my 1971 Chevy K5 Blazer. The video shows me starting to TIG weld for the first time on 20g sheetmetal. I made a few mistakes like blowing a few holes in the joint that needed to be filled, stuck the tungsten too many times, and did a little grinding of a few spots that got too much filler material. Even with the mistakes, I was able to join it to the fender really well so I can finish straightening it.

Trimming my final patch panel to fit the blazer
I finally start the assembly process of trimming my sheet metal patch panel to size, scribing the fender of my 1971 Chevy blazer so it matches the patch and then cutting both to final size. A good portion of the video is me carefully trimming and filing the patch so it fits the fender with an extremely small gap to enable a good TIG weld.

Metal shaping the final patch panel on my Chevy blazer
In this series of videos, I've had to learn how to use a shrinking disc, TIG weld, use a hammer and dolly, hammer form sheet metal, shrink metal with a torch, use shrinking pliers and a body hammer. Persistance pays off and patch panel number 4 is a keeper.
This final version is good enough to weld back onto my 1971 Chevy K5 Blazer. The video shows how I formed the sheet over a wooden and steel buck, hammer formed an thin detail around the wheel arch that's typically bead rolled, and flatten an area that that was corrugated with my shrinking pliers.

First real attempt at hammer forming a steel patch panel bdp garage #14
This video is the beginning of the real hammer forming of the patch panel and correcting some of the problems I have with the first experiment. Check out the prior videos of how I built the form used to create this patch panel and stay tuned for the forth version as it gets welded back onto the truck!

I discovered that the metal plates I used to create the edge that supports the hammer blows needed to be blended out at the bottom. I spent some time blending out the bottom edge that needed to be fixed and prepared the first piece of 18g steel to be formed

Build my own metal Shrinking Pliers
To get sheet metal to bend around a corner that requires it to use less space, you need to shrink it using a variety of techniques and I spent some time creating a tool that lets me corrugate the metal edge so it doesn't fold over all in one place so that it can be hammer shrunk later.

After failing to clamp my patch panel good enough on the first try, I designed a plywood clamping block that holds the steel sheet much more securely and allows me to add multiple clamps without damaging the metal being formed.

bdp 20220124 episode 3: How much shrinking can you achieve with a shrinking disc.
I spend some time on the lower section of the fender using a shrinking disc to lower the high crown it has and measure the amount of shrink after each pass to get an idea of how much shrinking is possible and how fast it can be done. Using a torch to shrink a bit faster on the upper portion and had to fix a mistake created by using too much heat and pressure.
