I've followed Ryan Michler for years. He's a leader of men and the founder of The Order of Man. He writes great books on masculinity, has an extremely successful podcast, and tens of thousands of men look to him for guidance in all facets of life, from self-mastery to family, from money to contribution, and everywhere in between. Last year, I had him on my show, completely unaware of what he was battling behind the scenes. You can watch that show at the link below. Within a month of that show, he publicly made it known that he was deeply struggling with alcoholism, and that he was getting a divorce. I messaged him through DM that I was proud of him for coming clean, and that he would end p helping a lot of men if he stayed the course in recovery. However, I knew that I was battling alcohol as well. A year later, Ryan and I come together to have an authentic conversation on leadership, faking it with family, falling from grace, imposter syndrome, recovery programs, and some keys to recovery and ACTUALLY living an authentic life. God’s got me!” We’ve all heard someone say that, and it sounds like faithfulness, but is it biblical? Is this the attitude we are called to hold as husbands, wives, mothers and fathers who are responsible for ourselves and others? Proverbs 22:3: The prudent person sees danger and takes precautions, but the simple keep going and pay the penalty. Provide For Your Family by Preparing for Hard Times This concept of preparedness is nothing new; in fact, long before the word prepper or survivalist became part of the modern lexicon, the Bible encouraged the wise man to study the dangers ahead, and then take precautions to protect themselves and their family from those threats. As noted earlier, I learned nearly 50 years ago en route to becoming an Eagle Scout that the Boy Scout motto was, “Be prepared”. The Bible is clear that the role of a dutiful and responsible man is to provide for his family. This would include preparing for hard times as well. But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever. (1 Tim 5:8) The Bible on Preparedness The Wise man takes food storage seriously. Even during short-term disasters, food supplies can be cutoff in an instant. If that happens, you’re going to have to live off only the supplies you currently have in your home for weeks, maybe longer. During a long-term disaster, your food supplies, and your ability to acquire and preserve new food are going to be determining factors in whether or not you make it through. Go to the ant, you sluggard! Consider her ways and be wise, Which, having no captain, Overseer or ruler, Provides her supplies in the summer, And gathers her food in the harvest. How long will you slumber, O sluggard? When will you rise from your sleep? A little sleep, a little slumber, A little folding of the hands to sleep—So shall your poverty come on you like a prowler, And your need like an armed man. (Prov 6:6–11) The lazy man will not plow because of winter; He will beg during harvest and have nothing. (Prov 20:4) Do not love sleep, lest you come to poverty; Open your eyes, and you will be satisfied with bread. (Prov 20:13) There is desirable treasure, And oil in the dwelling of the wise, But a foolish man squanders it. (Prov 21:20 A prudent man foresees evil and hides himself, But the simple pass on and are punished. (Prov 22:3) The lazy man says, “There is a lion in the road! A fierce lion is in the streets!” As a door turns on its hinges, So does the lazy man on his bed. The lazy man buries his hand in the bowl; It wearies him to bring it back to his mouth. (Prov 26:13–16) A prudent man foresees evil and hides himself; The simple pass on and are punished. (Prov 27:12) He who tills his land will have plenty of bread, But he who follows frivolity will have poverty enough! (Prov 28:19) There are four things which are little on the earth, But they are exceedingly wise: The ants are a people not strong, Yet they prepare their food in the summer; (Prov 30:24–25) For even when we were with you, we commanded you this: If anyone will not work, neither shall he eat.
