D.O.A 1950 | Vintage Mystery Movies | Film Noir | Crime Noir | Vintage Full Movies
An opening sequence features Frank Bigelow walking through the long hallway of a police station to report his own murder. From here to the end, the story is told in flashback. Bigelow is a hard-driving accountant and notary public in Banning, California, who decides to escape for a fun vacation in San Francisco. At the hotel, he is invited to join a group of conventioneers for a night out. He ends up at a nightclub where, unnoticed, a stranger swaps his drink for another one. The next morning, he feels extremely ill. Doctors determine that he swallowed a poison, "luminous toxin," for which there is no antidote.
With only days to live, Bigelow embarks on a desperate search to discover the motive for his poisoning. A call to his secretary Paula provides a possible lead: a Eugene Philips has been urgently trying to contact him. Bigelow travels to Philips' import-export company, meeting Halliday, the company comptroller, who says that Philips has committed suicide.
Bigelow locates Eugene Philips' widow and brother Stanley Philips. Months earlier, Eugene had purchased iridium, a "luminous toxin", which had been stolen by a criminal named Majak. The seller was a George Reynolds (aka Raymond Rakubian), Majak's nephew. As a result of this illegal sale/purchase transaction, Eugene Philips faced criminal charges.
The bill of sale would have cleared Eugene, but has gone missing -- and that document had been notarized by Bigelow himself. He learns that Reynolds/Rakubian is now dead. He realizes that someone seems intent on eliminating all evidence of this sale.
That someone turns out, in a plot twist, to be Halliday. Stanley Phillips -- who has now been poisoned -- reveals that Eugene discovered that his wife and Halliday were having an affair. Mrs. Philips affirms that during a confrontation that turned violent, Halliday threw Eugene over a balcony. To make it look like suicide, the pair insisted that Eugene had killed himself over his legal troubles. When they discovered that there was exonerating evidence of his innocence in the notarized iridium bill of sale, Halliday began disposing of anyone knowing about the document, and that led to Bigelow.
In the final scene, Bigelow tracks Halliday to the Philips company and finds him wearing the same distinctive coat and scarf as the man who switched the drinks. Halliday draws a gun and fires first, but Bigelow fatally shoots him.
Bigelow finishes telling his story and dies. The police detective taking down the report instructs that his file be marked "D.O.A."

Dishonored Lady 1947 | Hedy Lamarr | Vintage Mystery Movies | Film Noir | Crime Noir |
Madeleine Damien (Hedy Lamarr) is the fashion editor of a slick Manhattan magazine calledBoulevard. Men are attracted to her, including boss Victor Kranish (Paul Cavanagh), wealthy advertiser Felix Courtland (John Loder) and a former assistant, Jack Garet (William Lundigan), who is now working for Courtland and blackmailing her about events from her past.
Madeleine makes a suicide attempt and is headed toward a breakdown. She crashes her car near the home of Dr. Richard Caleb (Morris Carnovsky) a psychiatrist, who discovers her unconscious and cares for her. Then, thanks to his professional care, she realizes she is running away from herself just as her popular artist father who committed suicide may have been doing. As she is being put upon by her job's demands, she suddenly decides to quit her job and disappear from the fashion scene. Under another name she moves into a smaller walk-up apartment where she goes back to her earlier love, painting. By catching a lab mouse without the stereotypical female fear for such animals she meets and impresses her downstairs neighbor. He is a handsome medical researcher, David Cousins (Dennis O'Keefe), who just happens to need someone to draw the cells he studies under the microscope. They work together intensely, resulting in an excellent paper that David is invited to present at a conference. Before he leaves David proposes marriage. Madeleine clearly wants this too, but feels too uncomfortable to say yes because she has never told David about her somewhat checkered love life.
In the meantime, Madeleine's whereabouts ceases to be a secret to her previous colleagues, and to Felix Courtland who even manages to get a key to her apartment and surprises her there, but she shows him the door. Then, just when David is away, a colleague at Boulevard magazine contacts her seemingly for some technical advice, but Madeleine wants to have nothing to do with the magazine. Still, she consents to meet her colleague at one of their old haunts, where everyone still knows her and where, surprise, her erstwhile boss and the former assistant happen to meet her as well. As was her custom earlier, she drinks too much and, for want of a taxi, accepts a ride in Courtland's chauffeur-driven car and, as happened earlier, ends up at Courtland's mansion by default. There, Courtland kisses her, but is interrupted by Jack Garet on a return visit. It so happens that Garet had stolen a precious stone out of Courtland's home safe, and he wants to talk to Courtland to dissuade him from going to the police for the second time. Courtland refuses and kicks him out, with much noise. Madeleine wakes up from the shouts, realizes that she can leave Courtland and slips away from his home through the rain. Garet comes back again, Courtland refuses to leave the police out of the burglary, and while he is calling the police Garet fatally bludgeons him with a table cigarette lighter.
The next day David comes home early from a successful conference that has even made the newspaper. But, the same issue has the sensational news about Courtland's murder. Madeleine sees this news, and realizes she is in trouble. Shortly thereafter the police come to arrest her, and it comes out that Madeleine has lived under a false name. David is completely blown over by what he now hears about Madeleine's past for the first time. In his shock he refuses to marry this unknown person. Madeleine is charged with the murder. Later on, during the trial, she is catatonic, completely uninterested in the proceedings and refuses to let her lawyer defend her until David, as a witness, is asked if he still loves her. He does: the response that Dr. Caleb may have suggested would be important to Madeleine. Indeed, now she becomes a cooperating witness. In the process, Courtland's home safe is discovered as is the theft, in part by David who notices that Garet may be hiding something. David confronts Garet, subdues him in a fight, and Garet is arrested. He confesses, and Madeleine is declared innocent. In the end, Madeleine leaves David a letter explaining that she can not marry him until she is sure she can really be the person he once thought she was. David hears that she's gone to the airport, where Madeleine is waiting for the plane with Dr. Caleb who tells her she is making a mistake to go away. But David comes just in time to grab Madeleine on the tarmac, waves the plane away, and they are finally in each other's arms.

BlueBeard 1944 | Crime Noir | Vintage Horror | Vintage Full Movies | Vintage Thriller Movies
All Paris is frightened by the murders attributed to "Bluebeard".ModisteLucille (Jean Parker) is introduced to Gaston Morrell (John Carradine), apuppeteerand painter, by her friend. They are attracted to each other, and she accepts a commission to design some costumes for his puppets.
At home, Morrell is confronted by a jealous Renee (Sonia Sorel), who performs in Morrell's puppet show and is his lover. When she wonders what became of the models who had posed for him, he strangles her, then dumps her body in theSeine River.
Art dealer Jean Lamarte (Ludwig Stössel) is aware of Morrell's homicidal tendencies, but keeps his secret, as Morrell's paintings fetch high prices. However, the normally discreet Lamarte makes a mistake in selling Morrell's last work to a duke. When the duke exhibits his collection, a policeman on guard recognizes the portrait as being that of one of Bluebeard's victims.
Inspector Lefevre (Nils Asther) of theSûretécalls in one of his best undercover agents, Francine (Teala Loring), who happens to be Lucille's sister. She and her "father" go to Lamarte to have her portrait done. Lamarte is on his guard, but her father is willing to pay a very large commission to find the man responsible for the duke's painting, and Lamarte's greed overcomes his caution.
Morrell has decided to give up painting (which triggers his murderous compulsion) out of love for Lucille, but Lamarte pressures him into one last picture to make him financially independent. However, Francine recognizes him, having met him briefly earlier at her sister's apartment, and Morrell has no choice but to dispose of her. Certain that Francine and her father were working for the police, Lamarte tries to flee, but Morrell catches him and kills him too, before escaping. The only clue he leaves behind is thecravathe used to strangle Francine.
At Francine's funeral, Inspector Lefevre shows Lucille the cravat. She knows it belongs to Morrell, as she had mended it for him. When she confronts Morrell, he tells her the story behind his crimes. As a starving art student, he had nursed back to health a woman who had fainted, fallen in love with her, and painted her portrait. She left without warning. When his painting was chosen to hang in theLouvre, he searched for her to tell her the news, only to discover that she was a prostitute. Enraged by her contemptuous response, he strangled her. But ever since then, every model he painted turned into her in his mind, and he was compelled to kill her again and again. When Lucille tells him she is going to the authorities, he starts strangling her too, but the police break in. Lefevre saw that Lucille recognized the cravat and had her followed. After a chase across the rooftops, Morrell falls to his death into the Seine.

Behind Green Lights 1946 | Vintage Crime Drama | Vintage Mystery Movies | Film Noir | Crime Noir
Police Lieutenant Sam Carson spots Walter Bard's bullet-ridden corpse in a car brazenly left in front of the police station. Carson questions Janet Bradley after finding her name in the dead man's appointment book. She admits that Bard had been blackmailing her friend for $20,000, and that she went to see him, though she had been able to raise only half the money. When he refused to settle for that, she claims she took what she came for at gunpoint. Max Calvert, a newspaper owner, pressures Carson to arrest Bradley to hurt her father's election campaign for mayor. Carson declines.
When Dr. Yager, the corrupt medical examiner, informs Calvert that Bard actually died from poison, Calvert orders him to get the body out of the police station and substitute another corpse for it before anyone else finds out.
Meanwhile, Carson interviews Bard's estranged wife, Nora, who is accompanied by her lawyer and boyfriend, Arthur Templeton.
Complications ensue when a prisoner pulls his own switch, taking the place of Bard's body to escape from the police station in an ambulance. Johnny Williams, the new reporter on the police beat, finds the missing body in a closet. He gets a scoop for his newspaper, and Carson gets his corpse back. The lieutenant notices there is very little blood for a fatal gunshot, so he orders another autopsy, by someone other than Yager.
Then Nora Bard and Arthur Templeton voluntarily confess to him that they lied before. Nora was in her husband's apartment when he died. She had gone to plead for a divorce, and hid in another room when Janet Bradley arrived. After Janet left, Nora found Walter dying after drinking some liquor. When she ran out, she was seen by Templeton. He went into the apartment, assumed Nora had committed the crime, and staged the fake suicide to protect her.
Noticing a fresh flower among Bard's effects, Carson questions flower seller Flossie. She mentions that when she went to try to collect what Bard owed her, she saw Yager unlock and enter Bard's apartment. Carson confronts Yager. Knowing that Bard had been investigating Yager for amalpracticesuit, the policeman guesses that Yager stole the evidence Bard had found and poisoned the liquor. Yager makes a break for it, but is caught. At Detective Oppenheimer's suggestion, Carson then takes Janet Bradley out.
Bard’s appointment book showed he had an appointment with Janet Bradley on January 17 10:30 PM
A scene later in the police headquarters shows a paper wall calendar with a date

Scott falls in love with her. At a party, however, Kyra seduces a guest, Barton Kendall. When his wife Evelyn objects, Kyra disguises herself again and murders her. Then she marries Kendall, but behaves monstrously toward him. Kansas City Confidential 1952 | Crime | Film Noir | Crime Noir | Vintage Full Movies
A nameless, ruthless man (Preston Foster) who identifies himself as Mr. Big is timing to the minute the arrival of two trucks. One is an armored car routinely picking up bags containing much money from a bank. The other truck delivers to a flower shop next door. The man's timing shows that, for a very few minutes, the schedule of both trucks coincidentally parks them next to each other. He is casing the armored car. He needs a gang to help him rob it. He selects three men for the gang—the addictive gambler Peter Harris (Jack Elam) wanted for murder, gum-chewing thug Boyd Kane (Neville Brand) and the womanizing Tony Romano (Lee Van Cleef). When interviewing them, he wears a mask so they cannot identify him. He has selected them because each has a reason for fleeing the US. They will fit perfectly into Mr. Big's complex plan, which appears to be an ordinary robbery but is much more.
Part of his plan involves making an innocent patsy out of the floral truck driver and ex-con Joe Rolfe (John Payne), a look-alike getaway truck that the police will pursue instead of Mr. Big's truck, to buy time to successfully escape the country. The robbery and pursuit go just as Mr. Big has planned. Each wearing a mask so none can identify each other, he and his gang arrive in a look-alike floral truck as Rolfe, unaware, drives away. Big and his gang subdue the armored car guards in four minutes, grab bags containing $1.2 million and flee, knowing that Rolfe's distinctive getaway truck will be mistaken for his. Escaping, Mr. Big gives each gang member a torn king playing card. He tells them, "Hang on to those cards. We'll cut up the money when I think it's had time enough to cool off. I've got everything covered, but in case something does go wrong, and I can't make the payoff myself, the cards will identify you to whoever I send with the money." When the gang members object, Big tells them, intensely, "You can't even rat on each other because you've never seen each other without those masks. I've made you cop-proof and stoolpigeon-proof and it's going to stay that way. Keep those masks. You'll be wearing them at the payoff." The mystery man sends the other three to other countries to wait for the final payout.
