However, a few days later, he is embarrassed at his cowardice and goes through the woods again after dark. Nath is struck from behind and knocked down into a stream. He returns to the farm believing that Pete hit him, but Meg and Ellen say Pete has been in the room with them since Nath left. Soon, both Nath and Meg become obsessed with searching for the mysterious "red house" and agree to go into the woods every Sunday, which is the one day Nath has some free time, to look for it. They have no luck.

Man In The Attic 1953 | Vintage Crime Drama | Vintage Mystery Movies | Film Noir | Crime Noir
Man in the Atticis a 1953mystery filmdirected byHugo Fregonese. It was released in the United States on December 23 byTwentieth Century Fox. The movie is based on the 1913 novelThe LodgerbyMarie Belloc Lowndes, which fictionalizes theJack the Ripperkillings, and was previously filmed byAlfred Hitchcock in 1927, byMaurice Elvey in 1932, byJohn Brahm in 1944, and subsequently byDavid Ondaatje in 2009.
Plot:
The story takes place inLondon, 1888. On the third night of the Jack the Ripper killings, Mr Slade, a research pathologist, arrives quite late at the home of Mr and Mrs Harley, looking to rent a room. Slade rents out a room and an attic, which he says he needs for his research work. Mrs Harley notices that Slade acts in a strange manner, for example turning several pictures of actresses to the wall, saying that he can feel their eyes on him. He also mentions that he is usually out late at night working, but he never explains what his research involves.
Mrs Harley's niece, Lily Bonner, arrives to stay at the house shortly afterwards; she is a beautiful stage actress and singer, recently returned from a successful stage production in Paris. Slade leaves the house for the evening, wearing an Ulster coat and carrying a small black bag, and meets Lily before her opening night in London. At the theatre an old colleague of Lily's, Annie Rowley (who has fallen on hard times), goes to see her backstage, but she is later murdered by the Ripper, and Inspector Warwick, who is investigating the murders, informs Lily and tells her that the suspect was seen wearing an Ulster coat and a small black bag. The next morning Warwick goes to see Lily again to ask a few questions, and Slade appears and gives some unorthodox opinions regarding the Ripper and says that he feels the police will never catch him. Mrs Harley's suspicions are further aroused when she smells burning coming from Slade's attic room, and she is convinced that he is the killer when she discovers that Slade had been burning his black bag; however Mr Harley remains unconvinced.
Lily is attracted to Slade, and he tells her that his mother was also an actress but also that, although she was beautiful, she was also evil and that he both loved and hated her. She behaved in an adulterous manner and his father became an alcoholic after she left him, and she ended her life as a 'woman of the streets' (i.e., a prostitute) and died on the streets inWhitechapel. Slade shows Lily a picture of his mother. Inspector Warwick then arrives to take Lily to theBlack Museum, and Slade decides to join them, much to Warwick's displeasure. At the Museum, Slade makes numerous derisive comments about the gruesome nature of the exhibits, although he seems to take a particular interest in the five pictures on the wall of the five Ripper victims, before again telling Warwick that the police will never catch the Ripper.
That same evening, yet another woman is murdered and later Slade is seen washing his hands in the river. During the night, Lily is woken and goes downstairs to find Slade burning some items of clothing, including his Ulster coat, which appears to have blood stains on it, although Slade claims that he spilled some solution on the coat and it might be contaminated.
Meanwhile Warwick checks out Slade's credentials at the University hospital, and is told that Slade is involved in research and works very late hours. Lily asks Slade to meet her backstage at the theatre that evening, but before that Warwick decides to see if Slade's right thumbprint matches one left by the Ripper at the scene of one of his crimes, and enlists Mr Harley's help to search Slade's room. Warwick discovers the picture of Slade's mother in a drawer, but Lily catches them and complains to Warwick that he is harassing an innocent man. Warwick later tries to match the fingerprint, but his assistant notices the picture of Slade's mother and realises that it is Anne Lawrence, the Ripper's first victim, whose picture is on the wall of the Museum.
By this time Slade has gone to the theatre to see the show, but he observes all the lustful looks on the faces of many of the men in the audience as they watch Lily dancing, and becomes agitated, and when he goes to see her backstage he tells her that he hates other men looking at her in such a manner and begs her to go away with him somewhere, but when she resists he pulls a knife out of his pocket and prepares to cut her throat, but he cannot carry out the act, dropping the knife and escaping out of a window. The police, including Warwick, pursue Slade through Whitechapel, but Slade evades them and appears to drown himself in the river; however, despite Warwick and other officers searching for him in the river his body is not found and the possibility is left open that he may have escaped alive.

The Last Alarm 1940 | Vintage Crime Drama | Vintage Mystery Movies | Film Noir | Crime Noir
The Last Alarmis a 1940 Americancrime filmdirected byWilliam Westand starring veteran character actorJ. Farrell MacDonald.
Plot:
Captain Jim Hadley, fire chief, has his retirement dinner after 40 years in the service. The next day, time hangs very heavy on his hands so that he even chats to a brush salesman (who has a perfectElmer Fuddvoice). Bored, he later visits his old fire station, Fire Company No.7, and talks to the men there, who are called out on a fire.
The Great Eastern Insurance Company is where Frank Rogers (who is interested in Hadley’s daughter Jane) works. There have been a number of fires lately and arson is suspected. This thought is echoed at the Arson Bureau where Lieutenant King, chased up by the mayor, tells Henderson and Roberts he wants results. They know it is an arsonist who uses time bombs and gasoline. The arsonist turns out to be the keeper of an antiques shop, which Joan visits.
Jim is making plans for the future with Burt Stafford, who is due to retire soon. Burt is called out on a fire with the others and is very badly injured there. He dies in the hospital, with Jim standing beside him. The antiques man has called at the Hadley home to bring a salt and pepper set he had to do minor work on, which Joan had bought. She sees the gleam in his eyes when she lights a match.
Jim joins the arson investigation at the bureau, having had some experience when he was in the fire brigade. Spectroscopic analysis of wood found at the scene of the last big fire reveals that part of the burnt time bomb box Jim found was maple wood, so he, Henderson and Roberts scour the city for the maker of the boxes and who they sold them to.
At another big fire, Jim comes across a statue of Vulcan (the Roman god of fire) which the arsonist dropped, it being his inspiration. The arsonist gets it from Jim’s unlocked car where he put it. Mention of this statue later—and the fact that Frank and Joan saw it in the antique shop window—provide a strong lead so they get a search warrant. They do not find any bomb-making equipment, but Jim finds wood shavings which later analysis reveals to be the same wood as that used for the time bomb box.
Jim and Frank go after the arsonist, who has lost his bureau tail. The arsonist goes to the basement of the Hadley house where he plants a time bomb. He goes upstairs and confronts Mrs. Hadley and Joan, and as Jim and Frank realize he may be back at their house—having been seen in the vicinity—the bomb goes off and the basement catches fire. The arsonist tells the women Jim should not have interfered in his work. The men bust in the door and while Frank escorts the women outside, Jim goes after the arsonist, who now babbling about being the god of fire. The arsonist falls down the basement steps into the burning basement and dies. Some time later there is another dinner in honor of Jim, who has got a new job—honorary fire chief of the city.
The film contained footage from a number of large authentic fires, a fire station, and firemen rushing to the fires and fighting the fires. No acknowledgment was given to the fire service. The unnamed city was Los Angeles as it was filmed at Fire Station 27 in Hollywood.

The story begins on a train at night where an elegantly dressed woman (Eve Miller) meets another passenger, a mysterious stranger (Fritz Leiber, Sr.) She is fascinated when he is able to predict every shake and bump of the train, and every flickering moment of darkness, an instant before they occur, although he claims he has never ridden on this train before. He is evidently gifted with some sort of second sight. He offers to tell her a story about events that began at some unspecified time at the next station.
The scene then shifts to acting out this narrative, which starts with Harold Dunlap (Charles Russell) inadvertently killing a woman with whom he has had a violent fight on the station platform. He places her body on the open rear end of a departing train and then goes in search of a boarding house where he can hide out for a time. There he encounters a young woman, Jean Maxwell (Mary Beth Hughes), with whom he appears to fall in love, and the young boy who saw him at the station. He attempts to silence the boy, but is revealed as the murderer when the boy is rescued. Resigned to his fate, Harold waits with Jean until the police arrive to arrest him.
After the film returns to the present, it is revealed that the mysterious stranger has an immediate and compelling interest in telling the story, and warns the woman not to get off the train when it stops. Instead, she spots her former fiancé (Harold) and leaves the train, where they fight and he kills her, revealing that she was the murder victim of the stranger's story.

The Hoodlum 1951 | Vintage Mystery Movies | Vintage Crime Drama | Film Noir |
The Hoodlumis a 1951 Americanfilm noircrime filmdirected byMax Nosseckand starringLawrence Tierney,Allene Roberts, Marjorie Riordan and Lisa Golm.
Plot:
Vincent Lubeck (Lawrence Tierney) is an habitual criminal from childhood, who has recently been released from prison on parole. He would not have gotten out had it not been for the pleas of his elderly mother. He gets a job working at his brother Johnny's gas station. He seduces Rosa, his brother's fiancee who hopes to reform him but can't resist his determined advances, which he makes in part to show her it's not so easy to be good in a bad world.
Vincent becomes interested in the armored car that makes regular stops at the bank across the street. He romances Eileen, a beautiful independent-minded secretary at the bank, after the police detective who arrested him last time says she's out of his league. At first he's just interested in the challenge, but realizing she knows a lot about the bank's inner workings, he starts pumping her for information. She finds him fascinating, but is a lot tougher than Rosa. Vincent begins to plan a bank robbery, and to recruit men he knows from prison to pull the job with him. He shared a cell with a master bank job planner, and listened carefully to the man when he talked about how to make such an operation work.
Rosa comes to Vincent (who has lost interest in her), begging him to marry her—he refuses, and she jumps off the roof to her death. The autopsy reveals she was pregnant, which Vincent's mother finds out about.
Vincent comes up with a plan involving a fake funeral procession, allowing the gang to get past a police blockade. With the money in hand (leaving several dead guards behind), the other heisters turn on the ill-tempered domineering Vincent, whose arrogance and inability to understand other people's points of view and anticipate their reactions, prevent him from spotting the betrayal and heading it off. He's the only surviving member of the gang the police know about, due to his connection with the gas station, so they get away clean, to rob another day, splitting the money evenly between them. Vincent told them that as the planner, he deserved the biggest cut, but he ends up with nothing but a bump on his head, and anall-points bulletinout on him.
In desperation, with no resources, he turns to Eileen, but she produces a small handgun, and orders him to leave, fearing he'll implicate her. His mother, now regretting her intervention on her son's behalf, curses him on her deathbed. Johnny, knowing now what happened to Rosa, takes him at gunpoint to a local dump (the film opens with a flash forward of them driving there)--but can't bring himself to kill Vincent. The police, who somehow managed to follow them there undetected, end up finishing the job.

The Great St. Louis Bank Robbery 1959 | Vintage Crime Drama | Film Noir | Crime Noir
The Great St. Louis Bank Robbery(also calledThe St. Louis Bank Robbery, the film title in the opening credits) is a 1959heist film, directed byCharles Guggenheimand starringSteve McQueenas a college dropout hired to be thegetaway driverin a bank robbery.
Based on a 1953 bank robbery attempt of Southwest Bank inSt. Louis, the film was shot on location in 1958. It featured some of the men and women from theSt. Louis Police Department, as well as local residents and bank employees, re-enacting their roles during the actual robbery attempt.[1]Steve McQueen was an unknown actor when filming began. Later in 1958 he had a breakout role as Josh Randall in the TV seriesWanted Dead or Aliveand gained national recognition.
Plot:
George Fowler (Steve McQueen), a former collegiate football star, is recruited for a bank robbery gang by Gino (David Clarke), the brother of George's estranged flame, Ann (Molly McCarthy). Gino is an ex-convict, cold and unstable. Although agreeing only to be the get-away driver, George is coerced deeper into the plot by the gang leader John Egan (Crahan Denton). Gino pressures George to reconnect with his sister Ann, in order to get a subsistence stake to tide the gang over until the robbery. The gang members seethe with mutual dislike and distrust.
Seeing Gino leaving the gang's bank surveillance, Ann presses George and deduces that they plan a bank robbery. She attempts to derail the plot by scribbling a warning to George on the bank's window. But this is seen by the 4th gang member, Willy (a minion of John's from prison). John and Willy burst into George's and Gino's lodgings to track down the betrayal. Gino reveals his sister Ann's identity and past relationship with George. The gang force George to take them to Ann's apartment, where he is sent away. Gino also abandons Ann on John's orders. John hurls Ann to her death from the fire escape, playing out revenge for his abusive mother. Told that Willy will be the driver, George is forced to a role inside the bank.
The next day, the robbers begin their heist. They neglected to bring a police-frequency scanner and are unaware that the bank had relocated a switchboard from the lobby, elements that foil key aspects of their plan. An employee triggers the silent alarm, and police swarm the bank exterior. John is shot while attempting escape behind a female hostage. Gino commits suicide in the basement vault. After briefly considering a battle with police, Willy flees, but is pursued.
George initiates a panicky escape behind another female hostage, but stops when her husband offers himself in her stead. Having learned that Ann was killed, George tries to surrender his pistol to a bank customer, who pushes it back to the sobbing, broken George. He is dragged into a paddy wagon, and sees the world receding behind metal bars.

The Guilty 1947 | Vintage Crime Drama | Vintage Mystery Movies | Film Noir | Crime Noir
The Guiltyis a 1947film noirdirected by John Reinhardt, based onCornell Woolrich's short story "Two Men in a Furnished Room". The film was produced by oil millionaireJack Wrather, the husband of lead actressBonita Granville.
Plot:
The film tells the story of two roommates, Mike Carr and Johnny Dixon. Johnny, who suffered a head injury during the war, meets a girl named Estelle Mitchell, and begins to date her. When he finds out she's dating other men around town he dumps her and starts dating her sweet twin sister, Linda.
The story picks up when Mike goes into Tim McGinnis’ bar in New York to wait for Estelle, a woman he hasn't met since her twin sister Linda was murdered six months earlier. He sits down and starts having flashbacks of the events around Linda's death.
Johnny, who once served together with Mike in the Army and was his roommate at this point in time, had frequent nervous breakdowns. Johnny and Linda were a couple, and they were very much in love, but the twin sister Estelle wanted Johnny for herself. Estelle was determined to break up the happy couple, but in the meantime she was seeing Mike, who had a hard time resisting the vampy Estelle.
Mike only met Linda once, but in doing so realized that she was the sister he should have been putting his energy into catching, as she was the more innocently virtuous of the two twins.
But the twin sisters both wanted Johnny, and one night they got into a fight over him, after which Linda went to see Johnny on her own. Estelle tries to intercept and get to Johnny's first. Mike sees Estelle arrive at Johnny's before Linda arrives and stops her from coming in between the two lovers. However, when Mike returns home a couple of hours later, Estelle telephones Mike at her mother's request to say that Linda never came home and has been reported missing.
Mike finds Johnny, drunk and distraught. He begs Mike to verify his alibi and that he heard Linda whistle for a taxi and saw her leave. When the police arrive to the scene they find a buckle from Linda's trenchcoat on Johnny's apartment floor, and after finding Linda's body in the apartment building they take Johnny in for questioning.
Mike passes by McGinniss' bar and finds another buckle outside the bathroom window. He goes to Johnny and mentions the possibility that Johnny's memory might have failed him the night of the murder. While they are talking, the police arrive to arrest Johnny and he panics. Mike helps his friend by letting him escape out the back. In order to persuade Mike to give Johnny up, police detective Heller takes Mike to the morgue to show him Linda's trashed body. Heller then recounts the horrible details of Linda's death: After being choked, Linda was pushed, still alive, into the chute of the trash incinerator, and when he was unable to fit her in the tight space, the murderer shoved her in and broke her neck. The murderer then pulled her out and put her in a barrel on the roof.
Mike is disgusted by this, but still doesn't believe his friend murdered Linda. He convinces Johnny to come out of hiding and clear his name. As they arrive home, Estelle is waiting for them with a man called Alex Tremholt, who has been renting a room at the Mitchells' since the twins were young.
While they are there, Mike hears a woman whistle for a taxi, and realizes that must be the same woman they heard the night of the murder. When Tremholt sees Johnny, he insists on calling the police to arrest him, but Johnny escapes once more. Detective Heller arrives and suggests Tremholt of having a long-standing, unrequited love for Estelle and of killing the innocent Linda, whom he mistook for Estelle, the object of his desire. With the truth being revealed, Mike hurries off to tell Johnny he is in the clear and just manages to stop him from hanging himself.
Back in the present, Mike drags Estelle to his old apartment and insinuates that she committed the murder. When he enters the flat, however, Heller is waiting to arrest him. He reveals that Jake, the apartment janitor, recently found Linda's neck scarf in the incinerator chute with Mike's fingerprints all over it. It turns out that Mike killed Linda, believing she was Estelle. After telling Mike that Tremholt's arrest was only a trick, Heller accompanies Mike down the stairs and past Estelle into the night.

Shadowed 1946 | Vintage Crime Drama | Vintage Mystery Movies | Film Noir | Crime Noir |
Shadowed, also known asThe Gloved Hand, is a 1946 Americanfilm noircrime filmdirected byJohn Sturgesand starringAnita Louise,Lloyd Corrigan, andRobert Scott.
Plot:
Salesman Fred J. Johnson manages to hit a hole-in-one as he plays golf one day, and he writes his initials and the date on the lucky ball. He swings at the same ball once more, but sends it into a ditch instead of towards the hole. When he goes to the ditch to get the ball, he finds a dead woman, as well, and next to the body lies a small package, which contains plates for forging dollar bills.
Fred takes the package from the dead woman. The returning murderer and his wife find Fred's marked golf ball upon returning for the packet of plates, and suspect that a man with the initials F.J. has taken the package. Before leaving, the man raises his voice in the culvert, because he suspects the golfer is in hiding, and warns "F.J." not to go to the police with the package, threatening to kill him and his whole family if he does.
Fred goes back to his family, and opens the package, finding the address to a print shop with the plates. He doesn't call the police, remembering the threat. Returning to their boss, Lefty, the couple are chastized for losing the package, and punishment is subtlely suggested by him whilst playing Patience,Solitaire: the "Boys won't like it"sic.
The murder is all over the news the next day, and Fred discovers that his lucky charm is missing from the chain of his watch. His daughter Carol goes out on a date with a banker named Mark Bellaman, and his other daughter Ginny goes to the golf course with her young beau Lester Binkey, a budding criminologist. Examining the location where the body was found, she finds her father's lucky charm.
Pretending to be a detective investigating the crime, the murderer returns to the golf club, and bullies a gardener into giving him a list of those who played the golf course the day before. He hears Ginny speak her name, and realizes she is Fred's daughter. He offers to drive her home to her father, saying he is an old friend of his.
When Fred goes to send the plates to the police anonymously by mail, he is followed by Lefty, who is only prevented from seizing them because s policeman friend of Fred's just happens to stop and speak to him.
Ginny is called in to speak to Lt. Braden about the murder, because she ran away when a policeman approached her and Lester at the golf course. This leads Braden to question Fred, and his suspicions are raised when Fred gives a contradictory account of Lester's conversation with him than the one Lester gave at the police station. Braden orders one of his men, Sellers, to tail Fred afterwards.
Layer that night Ginny is kidnapped by Lefty and his gang. They tell Fred that she will be killed if he doesn't give them the plates. They agree on an exchange, but Fred won't give the plates away even after Ginny is returned safely. Tony, the murderer, pulls a gun on him, but his wife Edna panics and rushes to the window to scream for help. Tony shoots Edna in the back, and Fred manages to knock down Tony with a golf club. Confronting Lefty whilst holding the club, Fred warns him not to move by telling him how long he's been using them, so Lefty sits down, and waits for the police to arrive.
In the papers the next day, Fred is mentioned as a hero who caught the murderer.
The family is reunited in happiness.

Bank teller Vince Grayson (DeForest Kelley) dreams that he stabs a man in an octagonal room of mirrors and locks the body in a closet. When he wakes up, he discovers marks on his throat, a strange key and a button in his pocket, and blood on his cuff. Cliff Herlihy (Paul Kelly), his police officer brother-in-law, tries to convince him it was just a dream.
A few days later, while trying to find cover from the rain, the pair finds themselves taking shelter in the strange house from Vince's dream, which is owned by a Mr. and Mrs. Belknap. They discover that the police found two bodies in the house, one in the mirrored room and one run over in the driveway. Mrs. Belknap, who was run over by a car, gave the police a description matching Vince before she died.
At first Vince is hopeful that he is innocent because he does not know how to drive, but he recognizes the victims from his dream. Overcome with remorse, he attempts suicide, but is rescued by Cliff. The detective uncovers clues that point to an evil hypnotist (Robert Emmett Keane) manipulating Vince. They realize that the hypnotist is actually Mr. Belknap in disguise, and they try to trap him by pretending that Vince wants hush money.
Belknap puts Vince under hypnosis and tries to get him to drown himself. Cliff rescues him from the lake and Mr. Belknap is killed in a car accident as he is trying to evade the police. It is implied that Vince will be acquitted of all charges since he killed the man in the mirrored room in self-defense.

Door To Door Maniac 1961| Five Minutes To Live 1961 | Vintage Mystery Movies | Film Noir |
Five Minutes to Liveis a 1961Americanneo-noir filmcrime filmdirected by Bill Karn (1913-1966). It was re-titledDoor-to-Door Maniacfor anAmerican International Picturesre-release in 1966. The film starsJohnny Cash, who wrote and sang the title song, andCay Forrester, who wrote the screenplay and whose husband, Ludlow Flower, produced.
Five Minutes to Livewas one of only two theatrical film roles Cash performed on-screen in his career (while he appeared inThe Road to Nashvillesix years later, it was as himself in a musical;A Gunfight, ten years later, was the other); he would appear in several made-for-television filmsand do some voice-over work in film later in his career.
Plot:
Fred sits in a dark room, detailing his most recent bank robbery. He talks about how he teamed up with hardened criminal Johnny Cabot to execute his plan.
Cabot is about to take the wife of the bank's vice president hostage. He holds her until he receives a call from Fred, informing him that they have the ransom money. Cabot watches the Wilson house as the husband leaves for work, and their son heads off to school. Posing as a door-to-door guitar instructor, Cabot talks his way into the house, and takes Nancy Wilson hostage.
At the bank, Fred enters vice president Ken Wilson's office, and hands him a check for $70,000, informing Wilson that he will withdraw the funds to cover the ransom or his wife will die. He tells Wilson to call home for proof that Nancy is being held hostage, then informs him that if he does not call Cabot back in five minutes, Mrs. Wilson will die.
Wilson surprisingly responds that he has been planning to leave his wife anyway, and runs off to Las Vegas with his mistress, Ellen. He tells Fred that he will be doing him a favor by killing his wife. Fred does not believe that Wilson will let his wife die. He is proven correct, as time ticks by, when Wilson finally cracks and agrees to pay the ransom.
Fred calls Cabot, and starts the clock over again. After the five minutes have passed, Fred works on Wilson to hurry. Meanwhile, at the Wilson house, Cabot is enjoying terrorizing his hostage. He begins forcing her to listen to his songs about her impending demise, shooting at her and making sexual advances toward her. Back at the bank, Fred has been taken down by the police, who arrived after someone tripped the silent alarm. As a result, Cabot starts to become nervous, having not received his expected call from Fred. Suddenly, Little Bobby comes in, home for lunch.
The police arrive outside the house. In a panic, Cabot grabs Bobby and runs for it, running right into police gunfire. Bobby pretends as though he has been shot in order to encourage Cabot to put him down. After apparently being very upset by the accidental shooting of the young boy, Cabot fires back, and is killed by police. Nancy runs outside to find her son, still alive and well. The film ends with Fred finishing his story to the police, then Mr. Wilson driving to Las Vegas, but with his wife, not his mistress.
