Bamboos Release Phytochemicals like Terpene Myrcene Thus Reducing Stress and Anxiety
Bamboos release phytochemicals including the terpene myrcene
Which we absorb through our skin and in aerosol particulates that we inhale through our respiratory system - these we get just by spending time with bamboos.
The act of sharing space with bamboos and better yet walking through a bamboo forest will reduce stress and anxiety while increasing a feeling of connectedness and clarity. The potential of utilizing green therapy to treat mental illness both mild and severe should include planting bamboos in spaces of healing and safety. Churches, schools, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and hospitals should all include therapy gardens for both the people attending / living in these places as well as those who help to make these spaces function.

the bamboo itself is antibacterial resistant, so it does great jobs. You don't have to worry about all these different pests attacking it. Compare that to cotton. Growing up in the United States, we learned in history that at the end of the 19th century, our cotton...
industry was almost wiped out because of the boll weevil and a lot of the cotton was grown in the south or the southern part of the United States. A lot of those southern, the entire southern economy was pretty much devastated because the boll weevil came up from the south and it attacked the cotton shoots and the price of cotton started going up and a lot of these different farmers didn't know what to do.
As a result, they started growing peanuts to try to recycle the land, get it cultivating again so they could start growing cotton again. Yes. Now, you fast forward another 40 years, 30 years, and now you're in the 20th century, and we've got these chemical pesticides that they have developed to basically attack the

Next Generation Think Bamboo : Bamboo Seminar in Africa
Short Bamboo Seminar AfricaIn this NEXT GENERATION episode, Jane Glissmann, shares here experiences studying built heritage and architecture in Germany, her impressions and learnings during various exchange programs/on-site seminars, on the African continent. One of the courses she was inscribed at the The RheinMain University of Applied Sciences @HochschuleRheinMain was called Klimagerechtes Bauen - Design build-Climate oriented Construction. This is where they built a bamboo pavilion structure from scratch which was subsequently dismantled and then rebuilt the Unique Bamboo Pavilion for the European Bamboo Expo 2023 in Dortmund, Germany.
Yes, so the seminar started out in Maputo, which is the capital city of Mozambique, and that's where the more theoretical part of the, or the input part of the workshop took place. So we heard lots of talks from different people in the country, like also some who are already having experiences with bamboo.
others who are trying to reinforce bamboo more in different areas. And there were also some people from other countries and other corporations that have also yet had more experience with it. And then we heard lectures of two people who developed a bamboo construction kit in their master thesis. And that's also where then the workshop.

The Soil Food Web - The Potential of Bamboo in Regeneration Soil
🦠🍄 The Soil Food Web, there's Dr. Elaine Ingham on the slide there, you know, world premiere microbiologist. And by the way, anybody out there who's really interested in this stuff, you can go on soilfoodweb.com and you can see the map.
of all of the people that have been trained in microscope tech, like I have using this system. So we have a global network of soil, you know, citizen scientists, and we are trained in a standardized process of analyzing soil microbiology. And they're everywhere. You probably got people near you. So yeah.
Awesome! That's really interesting!
Yeah, so you can see on that slide, you got the plant there, the organic matter, that's really incredibly important in all of this organic matter content in the soil. We talked about the topsoil, that's what topsoil is. It's organic matter and it's microbes and roots. And then you get the fungi, the nematodes. Nematodes are microscopic earthworms. You know, a lot of emphasis has been on earthworms.
and how good they are for the soil. Yeah, the big ones, but nematodes, nematodes are like some of the most populous organisms on earth and they're microscopic. We hopefully will see some if we do a scan later. You got bacteria, you got protozoa. So protozoa, that's another phyla. And those are like amoeba, flagellates, ciliates. Then you have the arthropods, which are like little insects.
and then you got animals and birds. So it's like a food chain, but it's a food web because it's more, it's not linear.

🍄 Biocontrol Agents and Entomopathogenic Fungi
Monitoring microbial diversity and the fungal-to-bacterial ratio is important for ecosystem resilience
This is like biocontrol agents. You could consider this kind of a biocontrol agent, but you can also consider certain fungi. Or we mentioned BT, bacillus thuringiensis. That's a biocontrol agent. We talked about how that can kill caterpillars or other pest insects. And it's a bacteria, so it's not a toxic chemical, right?
Then you've got, this one's really cool, entomopathogenic fungi. It's a big mouthful, but basically, if you see those grasshoppers on the right, on the side of the screen there, those grasshoppers, they're zombie. This is the zombie fungus. Yeah, if there were zombies, a zombie apocalypse, it would be because of a fungus jumping to humans.
These fungi attack, they infect animal organisms like grasshoppers or other insects, and they literally kill them. But for a brief moment, they'll control the behavior and they'll cause, one time I was hiking in the woods and on a mountain top and I saw all these flies and they were all like, they were like creating these white.
Beards it was like a beard hanging from a tree and like what is that? I mean now I realize it was a Entomopathogenic fungus that had attacked the flies and it took over their brain and caused them to fly and Find each other and form a big old mess Hang in there like an icicle crazy, but it does that because it's it hacks the nervous system of the animal and then makes it behave in a way that's going to spread the spores.
Yep, yep, pretty cool stuff. So microbial diversity is key to ecosystem resilience. There is no silver bullet. That's why I don't really have to know exactly what all is in this compost. It just works because it's so complex. But again, back to pathogens, they are part of it and they are not disease causing when you have complexity.

🦠 The Holobiont Theory and Interconnectedness
The #bamboo is a #Holobiont. The soil is a hollow, well, let's see. The organisms like a nematode, an earthworm is a hollow biome because an earthworm has #bacteria that live on its skin.

🎋🤓 Bamboo Glasses
I wanted to mention that your lenses, glasses are also like 50 or 60 percent bamboo. Right. Yeah, man. That's pretty cool. Wow. Did you do?
Holland
Yeah. These are made by a Vietnamese craftsman who studied in Japan on how to work with bamboo, and collaborated with him last year to make these. It's a combination of Vietnamese ox horn with Bart barbitus bamboo from the north of Vietnam.
Wow. So totally natural. Not even the front is like also natural and the side are bamboo.
Holland
all locally sourced natural materials. And this is one I recommend just because of, you're wearing metal or you're wearing plastic on your skin every day, especially if you have like metal or plastic earrings. You can actually feel how it impacts your skin. And if you are wearing a more natural material like bamboo that breathes, it feels great, You don't have that stink, you don't have that itching-ness that the plastic glasses would provide. And I'm in love with bamboo, so I just want it with me daily.

Bamboo's Role in Regenerative Agriculture
Fast forward to today, Shanti is a beacon in the realm of regenerative agriculture, and bamboo is at the forefront of her efforts. Bamboo's unparalleled adaptability to changing climates and its resilience in extreme conditions make it an invaluable asset in the fight against climate change.
Bamboo, as Shanti explains, is an integral part of the intricate dance between plants and their symbiotic fungi and bacteria. These microbial allies help plants evolve and adapt to their environments, a phenomenon observed as far back as the early 1900s. Bamboo, with its intricate root systems and diverse microbial communities, epitomizes this relationship.
The Bamboo Silica Miracle
But the magic doesn't stop there. Bamboo, rich in silica, plays a pivotal role in enhancing soil health and sequestering carbon. Silica, a natural element found in bamboo, boosts the plant's ability to break apart CO2, effectively aiding in carbon sequestration. Furthermore, it increases chlorophyll production, enhancing photosynthesis and the plant's vitality.
Silica's benefits extend beyond the plant itself. It holds the key to detoxifying the human body by removing heavy metals, including the notorious aluminum. In an era where environmental toxins are ubiquitous, bamboo's natural detoxifying properties offer a lifeline for those seeking a healthier, metal-free life.
Harvesting Bamboo for Life Regeneration
Understanding bamboo's life cycle is crucial to harnessing its regenerative potential. Bamboo shoots, often seen as a culinary delight, are an essential part of this cycle. Harvesting bamboo shoots at the right time is critical for maximum benefit. Shanti provides valuable insights into the art of bamboo shoot harvesting, emphasizing the importance of cutting them when they are young and tender.
