TOPICS: On Tuesday, Juan Merchan, the judge overseeing the hush money trial, fined Trump $9,000 for repeatedly violating his gag order, and threatened to jail the ex-president if he does so again. «The court will not tolerate continued willful violations of its lawful orders» — Merchan said, adding that he is «keenly aware of, and protective of, defendant's First Amendment rights», but will nevertheless jail the former guy «if necessary and appropriate». Prosecutors had argued last week that Trump had violated his gag order numerous times, including in social media attacks on his former attorney Michael Cohen, adult film star Stormy Daniels, and jurors assigned to the trial. Also, South Dakota governor and likely contender for Donald Trump's Vice President Kristi Noem has faced criticism for admitting she killed her family dog.

TOPICS: The Biden administration is considering bringing certain Gazans (from Gaza strip) to the U.S. as refugees, a move that would offer a permanent safe haven to some of those fleeing Hamas-rulled Gaza, according to internal federal government documents. In recent weeks, the documents show, senior officials across several federal U.S. agencies have discussed the practicality of different options to resettle Gazans, who have immediate family members, who are American citizens or permanent residents. Biden told the Israeli prime minister in his phone call that he should consider Saturday a win because Iran's attacks had been largely unsuccessful and demonstrated Israel's superior military capability, a senior administration official said. The US assessed that there was «no significant damage within Israel itself», according to a senior US military official.

TOPICS: At a conference to celebrate NATO's 75th anniversary, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said Ukraine will join the alliance – and that the purpose of the summit in Brussels was to work toward that membership. During the meeting, members of the Alliance praised determination and perseverance of Ukrainians and promised to continue to provide aid for the country. Yet Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg reaffirmed that the alliance does not consider itself directly involved in the war.

TOPICS: Earlier this year, pollster Scott Rasmussen asked voters a simple question: «Would you rather have your candidate win by cheating or lose by playing fair?» The answers he got back were «the most terrifying poll result I've ever seen». Among all Americans, just 7% said they would want their candidate to win by cheating. As Rasmussen put it, he'd rather see that number lower, but that's not bad. But more than a third of the elite 1% he surveyed would condone cheating. And among those who are «politically obsessed» – meaning that they talk about politics every day – that number shot up to 69%.
