Throughout his gospel, Mark highlights how much opposition Jesus received throughout his ministry. And it’s the same at the cross. Mark has already mentioned that the disciples had run for their lives, and we know that John was the only one of their number there. Interestingly, however, Mark doesn’t mention John. Instead, Mark makes a point of highlighting some very important people who were there to support Jesus. Some women were watching from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary, the mother of James the Younger and of Joseph, and Salome. In Galilee, these women had followed him and cared for his needs. Many other women who had come up with him to Jerusalem were also there. – Mark 15:30-41 This is an honour roll of faithful discipleship. It’s significant that Mark doesn’t mention the young apostle John, who was actually there. The only ones he mentions as being at the cross are the women. These are faithful women who had followed Jesus and cared for his needs all the way from his ministry in Galilee, and Mark notes that there were many of them there. It wasn’t just 12 men who followed Jesus. For Mark to have honoured these women in this way, within the context of his culture and time, points to their remarkable courage in being present at the cross. Mark singles out two of them for particular honour by naming them: Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the Younger and Joseph, and Salome.The attribute that’s highlighted of the women who had followed Jesus from Galilee and who were there at the cross was that they cared for Jesus’ needs. The Romans didn’t build the most powerful empire the world had ever seen by being inefficient and wasteful. When they crucified people, they did it in batches. They crucified two rebels with him, one on his right and one on his left. - Mark 15:27 The Romans were efficient with their executions. Why waste a perfectly good crucifixion on one person when you could kill three? So, together with Jesus, they executed two other criminals. We traditionally call these “thieves.” But these weren’t mere pickpockets. Mark calls them “rebels,” and the Greek words used for them in the gospels suggest that the best English equivalent for who they were would be, “terrorists.” Judaea was being torn apart by religious and political extremists, who virtually indiscriminately murdered and terrorised the population. It was much like our world today, really. At the end of the day, everyone was glad that this kinds of extremists were caught and punished. After all, they reasoned, there are some crimes that are just so heinous that only the death penalty is good enough for them. That’s who Jesus was crucified with. People sometimes think that the condemned man who Christ saved at the last moment must have had some goodness in his core. That’s why we call him the “good thief.” And the one who didn’t make it must have been close to the line, but not quite. If we have any tendency at all to think that way, then we haven’t understood the Gospel. Men who were being led to be crucified carried a placard which announced their crimes, often around their neck. When Jesus was crucified, this placard was then placed on the cross, above his head, for all to see. It was nine in the morning when they crucified him. The written notice of the charge against him read: THE KING OF THE JEWS. – Mark 15:25-26 They crucified Jesus in the morning because the chief priests wanted to try to get it all over before the main event of the Passover celebration, the sacrifice, and certainly before the Sabbath, which began at sunset. The reason why he was executed was nailed above his head: “The King of the Jews.” Jesus had been designated as the King, not just of the Jews, but of the world, by God himself. For hundreds of years the prophets had announced him as the coming King. The angels had announced his birth. John the Baptist had pointed him out. During three and a half years of ministry Jesus had demonstrated his royal authority and power. He had told them who he was. A week before the crowds had acclaimed him as their king when he entered Jerusalem. And now, there he was enthroned above them, with his title above his head. And still they couldn’t see it. They were in the presence of the greatest king who ever walked this earth ¬– the king not just of the Jews but of the universe itself ¬– yet they couldn’t see it. There on that hill, the king was establishing the greatest kingdom that this world will ever know – a kingdom that will conquer all and that will last for ever and ever. Jesus has been taken to the place of execution. Now he is to be crucified. Unlike what we might expect, his crucifixion isn’t described in graphic, harrowing detail. Instead, it’s described in a few simple, stark words. And they crucified him. Dividing up his clothes, they cast lots to see what each would get. – Mark 15:24 When Mark says, “And they crucified him”, this is what he means. The soldiers took the crossbeam and placed it on the ground. Then Jesus was stripped completely naked. The soldiers then threw Jesus onto the ground with his shoulders across the cross-beam. While the others held him down, one soldier nailed first one wrist, and then the other, to the cross-beam. The cross-beam was then hauled up to the vertical timber post by ropes, with Jesus hanging from the nails. When the beam reached the right height, it was dropped into a slot in the vertical post. The soldiers then held the feet of Jesus while first one foot, and then the other, was nailed to the cross, possibly through the ankles. Then the soldiers nailed the wooden tablet that announced his crimes above the head of Christ for all to see. Now that Jesus had been properly crucified, the soldiers settled down to enjoy a more profitable part of the day. You see, they got to keep his clothes as booty. At the Cross, Christ gave his robe of righteousness to all who would appreciate it and accept it. But the soldiers played while Jesus died.
