Ancient Explorers: Hanno, Himilco, and Pytheas
Some 2000 years before the Age of Exploration, maritime traders of the Mediterranean had begun spreading their fleets further than ever before, making some of the first recorded journeys to the western coast of Africa, Britain, and the arctic circle. The voyages of Hanno, Himilco and Pytheas are history that deserves to be remembered.

The Wisconsin Dairy Industry and Adda Howie: The Woman Who Sang to Cows
In 1914, the Arizona Prescott Journal-Miner stated that Adda Howie was "one of the most famous women in the United States." Yet few people remember her name today. "The woman who sang to cows" helped to develop the Wisconsin Dairy Industry, and became world famous as a result.

Daniel Drew: Wall Street Villain
The "Gilded Age" was the world of Cornelius Vanderbilt, of the villains Jay Gould and Jimmy Fisk. Involved with them as just as active a financier was a nearly illiterate cattle-drover who became a millionaire by underhanded means - who has been almost entirely forgotten.

Legendary Warriors: The Dahomey Amazons
The Greek legends of the Amazons, and the warriors of the Eurasian steppe that inspired them, were not the only women to have waged war. Perhaps the most prominent of the female warriors were the so-called Dahomey Amazons, an all-female force established by the rulers of the Kingdom of Dahomey.

The Last Battle of the Vietnam War: The Mayaguez incident
The last American combat deaths of the Vietnam War occurred more than two years after the US combat role in Vietnam ended, and two weeks after the fall of Saigon. The May, 1975 SS Mayaguez incident was an action embroiled in politics, a trial by fire for young marines, navy corpsmen and airmen, and, for many, a symbol of the frustration and heroism of a painful era in American history.

The Forgotten History of Ice
On July 14, 1850, a French consul was able to celebrate Bastille Day with chilled champagne on ice, in Apalachicola, Florida. The event was thought to be the first public demonstration of machine made ice. The innovation might have capped a millennia long quest for chilled beverages, except for the interference of the notorious "Ice King of Boston." The surprising history of the human quest for ice deserves to be remembered,.

Operation Market Time: the U.S. Coast Guard in Vietnam
The contributions of the U.S. Coast Guard seem often to be forgotten compared to the other services. One example is the service of the Coast Guard in the Vietnam war, including the largest surface naval engagement in that war. It is history that deserves to be remembered.

3 Presidential Close Calls
Sometimes, what almost happened in history is as interesting as what actually happened. While the “Great Man” theory of history is often criticized, there are some figures in history whose individual actions or personalities played significant roles in their times, and whose absence could have changed things significantly. Many times in history country leaders have narrowly escaped death. Some of those events could have ended important presidencies almost before they began.

The Emperor's Giraffe: The Chinese Age of Exploration
On September 20, 1414, an extraordinary gift arrived at the court of Zhu Di, the Yongle Emperor of the Chinese Ming dynasty. The gift was nothing less than the Qilin, a magical creature from Chinese legend said to represent an auspicious sign. The exotic animal represented a unique emperor of the Ming Dynasty, and an astounding age of Chinese exploration little known here in the west.

Supersonic Firsts
On August 20, 1955, United States Air Force Colonel Horace A. Hanes set the world’s first supersonic world speed record in a North American Aviation F-100C Super Sabre. Although we are well into the supersonic age, aircraft that can exceed the speed of sound are still rare machines, and marvels of engineering and pilot prowess. The early aviation pioneers who tested the terrifying sound barrier have helped scientists better understand the dynamics of superfast speeds.

Bernardo de Galvez, Spanish Hero of the American Revolution
It’s easy to forget that when the revolution began, Spain controlled almost all of the land west of the Mississippi, and they remained an aging but powerful player in American colonization. Not only did the Spanish provide monetary and logistic support to the fledgling United States, they provided invaluable military action in Florida. The Gulf Coast Campaign and its leader, Bernardo Vicente de Gálvez y Madrid, deserve to be remembered.

USS Texas and the Tampico Affair
Just months before the assassination of Franz Ferdinand would begin the July Crisis, a minor incident in the city of Tampico nearly sparked a war between the US and its southern neighbor. The incident represented the beginning of the active service of USS Texas to be a part of a diplomatic action against the dictatorial regime of Victoriano Huerta. The largely overlooked Tampico incident could have resulted in war, and did affect world politics for years to come.

The Battle of Cannae
Perhaps no great defeat has been more famous across time that one fought in the Second Punic War, when the feared Hannibal of Carthage crossed the Alps intent on sacking Rome. In a series of brilliant strategic victories, Hannibal threatened the very existence of the Roman Republic. And Hannibal perhaps never came closer to the defeat of his foes than when he met an unprecedented eight Roman legions on fields of Italia, near the small ancient village of Cannae

Sarah Bernhardt: The World's First Celebrity
Before social media and summer blockbusters, before even the concept of a “movie star,” one extraordinary woman created the blueprint for the stars of today. Without a single tweet, having never posted on instagram, the woman who has been described as “the world’s first celebrity” captivated king and commoner. The History Guy remembers Sarah Bernhardt.

The Other October Crisis: The Sino-Indian War of 1962
The Cuban missile crisis so dominated both the news at the time and the study of history since that the World, fearing all out war between the US and the Soviet Union, nearly missed that, at the exact same time, they needed to fear all out war between the US and Red China.

Christmas Cards: A History
The Christmas season is full of all kinds of traditions, many of which are different depending on what part of the world you’re in. But many of the traditions are similar as well, including one whose history you might ever have thought about: the Christmas Card. Among the earliest of modern Christmas traditions, according to the Hallmark company approximately 1.3 billion Christmas cards are sent in the United States annually, sending greetings, pictures, well-wishes and life updates to far-off family. But how sending Christmas Cards became a popular holiday tradition is a story that involves technology, culture, art, the postal service, and the Queen of England.

Forgotten Airship: USS Macon
The age of rigid and semi-rigid airships like the famous Hindenburg was a brief but exciting time, as the impressive ships promised to be part of a technological revolution. In the late 1920s the US began testing their use as flying aircraft carriers, able to launch and recover planes from the air. This led to the construction of two airships: the USS Akron and its sister, USS Macon, among the largest airships ever built.

Treasures of NOAA's Ark - currently on exhibition at the National Museum of the US Navy, Washington Navy Yard, DC until early November 2022.
The history of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the United States are intertwined. NOAA’s roots date back to 1807, when Thomas Jefferson established the nation’s first scientific agency, the Survey of the Coast. Since then, NOAA has evolved to meet the needs of a changing country. NOAA maintains a presence in every state and has emerged as an international leader on scientific and environmental matters.
The Treasures of NOAA’s Ark traveling exhibit showcases an array of heritage artifacts which tell the story of how the people, technology and resources shaped NOAA and its predecessor agencies over the past two decades. NOAA’s responsibilities include preserving, protecting and promoting its own heritage while at the same time sharing this history with the public through innovative programs.
Through partnering with public institutions, the exhibit increases awareness about NOAA and provides examples of how the agency has impacted the everyday lives of citizens from coast to coast.

The 1947 Centralia Mine Disaster
On March 9th, 1946 a letter was stamped as “received” at the Governor’s office in Springfield, Illinois. Miners at the Local 52 union of the United Mine Workers of America had addressed the letter to governor Dwight Green, begging him to take action at what they considered unsafe conditions at their mine in Centralia. “Governor Green this is a plea to you, to please save our lives, to make the department of mines and minerals enforce the laws.” Four men signed the letter - a little over a year later three of the men would die in a mine explosion.

The Other Tea Parties
Though by far the most famous, the protest in Boston Harbor was only one of many ‘tea parties’ that followed all over the American colonies. The History Guy remembers the forgotten history of the "other" tea parties.
