On July 14, 1850, a French consul was able to celebrate Bastille Day with chilled champagne on ice, in Apalachicola, Florida. The event was thought to be the first public demonstration of machine made ice. The innovation might have capped a millennia long quest for chilled beverages, except for the interference of the notorious "Ice King of Boston."
