"Cimetiere Catholique de l'Ascension, Donaldsonville, LA - Oct2021" (1Jan2022) Cities Of The Dead
This is the third of three videos shot in late October in my journey up the Mississippi River from New Orleans to Donaldsonville. An interesting fact I learned about Donaldsonville is that in the 18th Century, Spanish immigrants from the Canary Islands and settled in this area of Louisiana. This cemetery is accompanied by Ascension Catholic Church which was founded in August 1772. The church that currently resides on the grounds was erected in 1876. Unfortunately, I was not in tune with my physical condition as I began filming the cemetery. I really didn't become aware that I was in trouble until about half way through my search. The video ends abruptly because I was suffering from severe dehydration and heat exhaustion, and I barely made it back to my car before collapsing. I left incredibly disappointed with myself, knowing I would not be able to return to film in the near future. My hurried pace is a result of me trying to see as much as I could, knowing I was in a bad way. I've edited out some of my interactions with families as I visited, but to some up what you don't see, is a conversation about fund raising for the Landry Family tomb, the cleaning of tombs in preparation of All Saints Day, and the last conversation which I did leave in; where I am told about a probably slave that was granted a proper burial by the family that owned her. My mind was in fight or flight mode, so I feigned my way through that exchange in order to get on with it. Hers' is the final grave we visit before the end of the video.
Joseph Aristide Landry, for whom the fund-raising is happening to repair the elaborate family tomb. Landry was a U.S. Representative serving from 1851-1853 as a member of the Whig Party. He then served on Louisiana's House of Representatives. The Advocate wrote an article outlining the fund-raising efforts: https://www.theadvocate.com/baton_rou...
Also interred in Cimitiere Catholique de l'Ascension is Confederate Congressman, Duncan Farrar Kenner. The youngest of 4 children, his mother Mary Minor died giving birth to him. The brothers were orphaned when Duncan was only 10, and only managed to survive the hardship due to a family friend that managed to save some of their inheritance. Duncan would later hire famed crypt architect, James Gallier, to build a splendid mansion. The city of Kenner bears the name of this early influential family.
The elaborate tomb I film towards the end of the video with the spires and cross belongs to Confederate Brigadier General, MG James Patrick Major. Upon being paroled, and unwilling to accept the end of the war, Major relocated to France. His end of life at a mere 40 years old was as a planter.
Like James Patrick Major, Allen Thomas Jr. was a Confederate Brigadier General. Also like Major, he was unwilling to accept defeat of the Confederacy and fled to France to seek assistance from Napoleon's armies. Upon returning to the U.S., he lived in Florida, and Waveland, MS - where he died. His remains were transported to Donaldsonville for interment in his wife's family vault.
I truly hope I am able to revisit the river parish cemeteries again soon. I feel like I opened a door and I barely had time to time to see what was on the other side. There is so much history to be found and learned from this area of Louisiana, and I feel drawn to seek more.
On to the next...

"The Abbey with Alan Bennett" (1995) Westminster Abbey Documentary
Westminister Abbey
●A Royal Peculiar: Alan Bennett offers a thorough tour of the Abbey. Bennett watches the early morning rituals of the "Abbey family," the people who tune the organ, dust the statues, deliver the milk, attend the first service of the day, and provides a general introduction to the layout and history of the place. Later, mingling with the public tours, he visits some of the multitude of graves in the Abbey, including those of Edward the Confessor, Chaucer, Mary, Queen of Scots, and the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior. He cites "the English liking for clubs" in the burial groupings, with architects in one corner, poets in another, and engineers in yet another. Westminster Abbey, as he observes, is "the Queen's Parish Church"–a "royal peculiar," answerable not to the Archbishop of Canterbury and the Church of England, but directly to the British sovereign.
●Whom Would You Like to Be Seen Dead With?: Bennett's saunter through a day in the life of the Abbey continues with visits to those interred in the poet's corner, including Lord Olivier, Lord Byron, the Brontë sisters, and Jane Austen. It is revealed that many notables have had several different resting places—successive kings and queens would often re-arrange them according to their own preferences. Ongoing preservation efforts that maintain the building are examined. Bennett takes viewers high up in the north transept, as the head woodsmith and his crew battle dampness and woodworm within the fabric of the building.
●A Mirror of England: Bennett visits the spot where every British monarch has been crowned since 1066 A.D. Bennett observes the Abbey's quiet evening rituals after the tourists have left – the boys' choir practice, a private tour given by the dean, and compline, the last service of the day. Bennett explores the ceremonial role of the Abbey within the Anglican Church, the room where the King James Version of the Bible was translated, and some of the many sculptures that decorate the Abbey's tombs. He presents a rare view of the 13th-century "Great Pavement" (the "Cosmati pavement"), the beautiful mosaic flooring, usually covered, on which the Chair of State (King Edward's Chair) stands at the Coronation. We learn that half of the Abbey day is spent preparing for Evensong, its main, daily service. Awaiting their moment, the Abbey's lay vicars play darts upstairs while the choristers practice their singing. Then, we find ourselves alone with Bennett in the dead of night pondering the observation made by 19th-century Dean Stanley, that Westminster Abbey is a "mirror of England." He concludes, "If we reflect that this unique place and its contents are what remains when greed, theft, violence, and occasional vindictiveness have done their work, but mitigated by an obstinate tradition of charity, tolerance, and magnanimity, then perhaps it is...or one may hope that it is...indeed a mirror of England."

"Secrets of the Coffin Chapel Display" (21March2024) Serenity Sue
●A Serenity Sue Production●
Secrets behind Coffins Displayed under glass are a remarkable example of a mans deep affection for his wife is to be found at Carrick-on-Shannon County Leitrim, in the Costello Memorial Chapel, reputed to be the second smallest chapel in the world. Only in the Holy Land is their said to be one tinier; certainly the Building is unique in this country and is considerably smaller than the smallest similar structure in Britain. The Chapel is sixteen feet long by twelve foot wide and thus covers an area of 192 feet. The smallest in Britain for which a restoration and preservation fund has now been opened, is at Upleathan in Middlesborough and measures sixteen feet by fifteen or 270 square feet. It is then 78 square feet larger than that at Carrick. The Costello Memorial Chapel was erected by Edward Costello to mark his devotion to his wife, who died in 1877 at the age of 46. Mr Costello had been a substantial farmer at Dromore a few miles from Carrick, but had moved to the town during the early part of the 1800’s and set himself up in business. He was widely known as a man of great kindness and charity and was partly instrumental in bringing the marist order of nuns to the town.
On the death of his wife, Mary Josephine, he had work on the memorial Chapel started. It was to be both a monument to his love and a last resting place for his wife and himself. The little building was dedicated on Aprill 22, 1879 and after the consecration ceremony, the body of Mrs Costello was placed in a sunken space to the left of the entrance, and covered over with a thick slab of specially made glass. The body, which was interred in a metal coffin, had been embalmed when Mrs Costello died, and had been cared for in the interim by the marist nuns. Mr Costello himself died in March 1891, and his remains also in a metal coffin were placed in a sunken space to the right of the entrance. A thick glass lid was placed over this vault too, and today the inscriptions on both coffins can be read with the aid of a torch. Mass was celebrated in the chapel on every first Friday from the time of its consecration to Mr Costello’s death, but no religious service has taken place in it since. The chapel now lies tucked in between two more recent buildings within a few yards of Carrick’s most prominent landmark, the town clock.
In the distant past, the old court-house, where 19 men were hanged in 1798, stood on the site, subsequently it became the property of the methodist trust, which erected a Wesleyan chapel there in 1820. Edward Costello acquired possession in later years, and when his wife died, he earmarked a portion of the site for the memorial chapel. The buildings on either side have ruined the perspective, but the little structure remains of very great interest and is visited by these tourists who hear of it by chance. The entrance gate stands between two handsome stone cut pillars and on the front gable of the building on either side of the door are a raised monogram with the letters B.M.C. and the Costello arms with the motto “Ne te quaesiveris extra.” The interior, including the roof, is lined with bath stone, which continually hardens under the action of time and air. The marble altar remains, but, the altar plate was long ago handed over to the catholic church in Carrick.
This video is from the Republic of Ireland and is one of the best places to visit in Ireland.

"A Mother's View into Daughter's Coffin" (18Mar2021) Faces of the Forgotten
THIS STORY:
During her short life, Florence Irene Ford, who was born in 1861, was terrified of storms. As soon a one developed, with the violent thunder and lightning, she would run to her mother, Ellen, who would patiently comfort her until the it passed.
In 1871, sadly, Florence died of yellow fever. Her mother, naturally very distraught, couldn’t bear the thought of Florence being buried and down there and all alone. She she still wanted to comfort her during those storms, even as she lay at rest. So Ellen made a strange request. She asked that her daughter’s coffin be fitted with a small window, with stairs leading down, like you would find at an outside cellar entrance. This would lead down to that specific spot where Florence's head rested, so she could peer into the coffin and feel close to her during the storms. And there she sit, after pulling down and closing the metal hatch doors above, as she would begin to sing and read to Florence, in order to comfort her during these storms.
The window is walled up now to prevent vandalism. Come with us as we step down to the bottom and try to imagine what it was like in that day of age.

"Island Of The Dead: Church Island - Llandysilio Island" (14May2022) Dead Good Walks
Church Island, also known as Llandysilio Island, (Welsh: Ynys Tysilio) is a small island in the Menai Strait on the shores of Anglesey to which it is attached by a short causeway that is reachable only on foot. The dominant feature of the island is with St Tysilio's Church, constructed in the 15th century, its churchyard, and a grade-II listed war memorial. The 20th-century bard Cynan (Albert Evans-Jones) is among several notable people buried in the churchyard. The Anglesey Coastal Path passes the head of the causeway.
The early history of the island, including details of the construction of the causeway to the Anglesey mainland, is unknown. The first recorded occupation was by Prince Tysilio, later Saint Tysilio, who was the son of Brochwel Ysgithrog, a king of Powys. Tysilio arrived on Church Island in approximately AD 630, and founded a hermitage there. He remained there for around seven years, before moving to Meifod where he became an abbot. No trace of Tysilio's hermitage survives on Church Island today.
The present-day church of Saint Tysilio was founded in the fifteenth century. It is not known who built the church, but it is likely that it replaced an earlier structure on the same site.Several prominent people are buried in the churchyard, including Henry Rees Davies,[6] other members of his family such as father Richard Davies, John Edward Lloyd, and the bard Albert Evans-Jones, known by the pseudonym of Cynan.

"Inside the Tombs of La Recoleta Cemetery!" (12May2013) Vic Stefanu - Amazing World Videos
Stunning Cementerio de la Recoleta, Buenos Aires (Argentina). A rare glimpse inside the tombs of Cementerio de la Recoleta (or, La Recoleta Cemetery) in Buenos Aires (Argentina).
La Recoleta Cemetery (Spanish: Cementerio de la Recoleta) is a cemetery located in the Recoleta neighbourhood of Buenos Aires, Argentina. La Recoleta Cemetery contains the graves of notable people, including Eva Perón, presidents of Argentina, Nobel Prize winners, the founder of the Argentine Navy, and a granddaughter of Napoleon. In 2011, the BBC hailed La Recoleta Cemetery as one of the world's best cemeteries, and in 2013, CNN listed it among the 10 most beautiful cemeteries in the world.
Considered one of the most unusual cemeteries in the world, La Recoleta Cemetery was declared the city’s first official public burial place in 1822. Aside from being the resting place of the deceased, La Recoleta Cemetery is completely unlike a normal cemetery. The place is full of elaborately carved scroll-work and stately pillars that only reach up to your shoulder because all the structures are weirdly mini; it’s more magical than macabre. The burial site of Argentina’s most famous figures, including Evita herself, the cemetery is a must-do while in Buenos Aires.
