Most articles and videos about how to start prepping will cover what you need. You need this much food, this bug-out bag; you must be prepared for this or that. While all of that is important, there is a whole lot you still need to include if you start from that point. In this video, I want to share some advice from the preparedness community about what they would change if they had to start over. I'll also elaborate on some of these prepping tips and give my thoughts on how my idea of prepping or preparedness has changed. Over the years, my concept of prepping or preparedness has evolved and taken on new meanings. While some basic principles of being prepared have remained the same, such as having emergency kits and knowing basic survival skills, the emphasis on preparedness has shifted towards a more holistic approach to being ready for any situation. Additionally, being prepared is not just about being ready for disasters or emergencies but also about adapting to unexpected changes and challenges in daily life. I recently put a 20Ah LiFePO4 battery in my lights-out kit (power outage kit) and did this video showing how easy it is. I used a 24" x 12" x 12" Husky toolbox and installed an A.C. charging adaptor and a 3 port outlet with two USB outlets, a voltage monitor, and a power cut-off switch. This battery box can be set up in many different ways; I just chose to add it to my blackout box. While some have no desire or ability to become a homesteader, the longer you prepare, the closer you get to the Homesteading or Prepsteading end of the spectrum. It all depends on how far you want or can take it. We'll also discuss how bartering & trading are affected by where we are on the prepping spectrum and how much effort we've put into building a community and support structure. When it comes to bartering, we think about Bic lighters and batteries. While this may be necessary in a full-blown SHTF situation, having goods and skills to trade with the neighbors will be helpful in many different crises. It will be much safer to barter & exchange goods with someone you know and trust, like a friend or neighbor, than a stranger. It is important to consider the impact & benefits of having a solid network of like-minded individuals to rely on during uncertain times, and increase our ability to weather various potential crises. I've been working on the bugging out course at the BOL, and it reminded me why learning about bugging out is important. To most of us, bugging out is a last resort and something we will never do. When we see an article or video about bugging out, it's almost like, "Here we go again." With so much else involved in prepping, I don't have time for this. Realistically though, there is a lot to be learned from bugging out that can be applied to other areas of preparedness. A little while ago, I set up a group at Locals for Members of the Bug Out Location and fans of Survivalist Prepper. I hoped it would be a great place to interact and discuss prepping because of the rules over at Locals that ultimately failed. I found a solution allowing me to set up the prepping community I envisioned Locals would be on Mighty Networks. It's only been up and running for a few days, but it's already light-years ahead of Locals. The group is a Facebook/forum hybrid where everyone can post, chat, and interact. Everything is categorized into different prepping topics, making getting the info you want easy.
