In this episode we have sailed to Argentina. While there we take a helicopter ride to explore the city and the snow covered mountain peaks by air. Along the way we see wildlife such as seals, dolphins, and whales from the air.
After searching the town by car for a needed repair part, we set sail and race (kind of) a 100 foot schooner down the Beagle Channel on our way back to our mooring ball in Puerto Williams.
After our arrival we are met with new friends on board a performance sailing catamaran. With this, new adventures are in store for us as a sailing couple along with our sailing dog roxy!
Follow along with us as we sail around the world without going through the canals.

After a chance encounter, we are invited to do some racing at St. Thomas Yacht Club (STYC). We hang out with our new friends there and tour the yacht club. It has some excellent sailing heritage, including producing many Americas Cup Sailors and Match Race champions. We have even raced against a few in the past.
After some fun, it was time to get back to boat work. We had a watermaker to rebuild. We fixed it up and even created a DIY how-to video in our tech talks section. We also check out the island of St. John (STJ) and do some snorkeling and freediving with turtles.
Then, it is on to BVI. We are sailing through paradise in bliss, but starting to become aware of the changes on the horizon.
About Us:
So who are we?
We aren't Vendee Globe Race or Volvo Ocean Race sailors, although sometimes Curtis wishes he was one. We don't have a fancy catamaran, but we do have a pretty and fast monohull sailboat.
We are not Sailing La Vagabonde, Expedition Evans, Sailing Doodles, Sailing Uma, Project Atticus, MJ Sailing, Gone With the Wynns, or SV Delos.
We are Kate and Curtis, a YouTube sailing couple and travel vloggers, with our sailing rescue dog Roxy, aboard SV Sweet Ruca, a J-Boats J/46 monohull. Cruising catamarans like the Fountaine Pajot's, Leopards, and Lagoons can't keep up, but we still like them ;-) We even wanted one before we found out how much fun performance monohull sailing and cruising is!
We used to be sailboat racers on the great lakes (we still are...kind of). We bought a sailboat, re-fit it, with a goal to sail around the world, doublehanded, via the capes (Cape Horn and the Cape of Good Hope). Some say this is the wrong way or the hard way. To us, the challenge is part of the journey.
We will see if this will happen or not, as the "new normal" has put quite a damper on our travels. For now, we are holed up in the Windward Islands of the Caribbean making videos and scuba diving.
We hope you enjoy our videos and vlogs and join us on our journey via our YouTube Channel.
'Till Next Time :-)

00:47 What kind of sailboat do you have?
01:59 Why did you go around the horn and back to where you came from, instead of keep going?
04:37 Do you guys not film breakages and repairs? Where is the drama and close calls? Can sailing really go this smoothly?
06:40 What is a bluewater sailboat? What about spade rudders & Hallberg Rassys? What sailboat to buy to sail around the world?
10:20 Sailing ability? Why purchase a sailboat with an open cockpit vs an enclosed cockpit to protect from the weather when offshore?
11:43 Why are the ropes (lines) all over the floor of the cockpit instead of organized and put away? Seamanship? Reaction?
13:46 After you rounded Cape Horn and dropped the staysail, did you use the engine to assist sailing upwind? Why?

20:35 Catamaran vs Monohull? How would a sailing catamaran be in the roaring 40's or furious 50's? Would it be safe?

STORM FORCE @ CAPE HORN [Ep. 108]
This is it! These are the conditions we sought to test us. We encounter FORCE 10 48+ knot wind gusts and heavy seas as we sail around Cape Horn to starboard. This is scary sailing, on the edge, and it is not for the faint of heart. You may get seasick. Don't try this at home!
#sailing #adventure #epic
This is the sailing we know you wanted to see when you subscribed.
You wanted to see if we were tough enough.
You wanted to see if we could make it.
You wanted to see a great adventure and sailing in extreme conditions.
We went looking for these conditions as we felt that choosing a calm weather window to round Cape Horn would be, well, disappointing, not to you, but to us. It would not be the challenge we were looking for.
We wanted to summit the Mt. Everest. Somehow, climbing that mountain on a sunny warm day with no wind and waves felt like selling ourselves short. We wanted huge waves. We wanted gale force winds. We wanted freezing cold temps.
Some may say seeking out these conditions is unsafe, or risky. Those people are not 100% wrong, but we say those people are living in fear. Don't be afraid! To experience true freedom is to live life without fear.
That being said, do not go sailing in these conditions without being well prepared and able to self rescue, do not put your life, your sailboat, and the lives of sea rescue personnel are at risk. We are both very experienced sailors and have sailed countless miles in harsh conditions while racing, solo sailing, and doublehanded sailing to prepare for this type of sailing.
Now enjoy a sailing video that we had lots of fun making. Click subscribe and come along for this awesome rollercoaster ride of an extreme sailing day!

Cape Horn Part 1 - The Start Of An Epic Sailing Challenge [Ep. 107]
Join us on the adventure of a lifetime as we conquer Cape Horn - one of the world's most treacherous waters! IN this epic sailing journey we navigate through breathtaking scenery and unpredictable elements. From the towering waves to the stunning landscape, our plan to leave Cape Horn to starboard will be an experience like no other.
#sailing #reallife #adventure
About Us:
We are two young racing sailors that decided to leave life on land and accomplish our goals of sailing around the world and learning about and experiencing different cultures. Originally from the Great Lakes, we left Newport Rhode Island in July of 2019 after refitting our boat DIY style. We then sailed to Maine, and from there down the East Coast of the USA, around Cape Hatteras, to the Bahamas, Back to Miami, and then to the Virgin Islands.
From there we headed south to Grenada to escape hurricane season, then back up to St. Maarten where we launched our first Atlantic Crossing to Horta, Azores. We made a quick trip back to the USA in July of '21 to defend our Chicago - Mackinac Race overall title, then it was back to cruising the Canaries, where we launched for our second Transatlantic voyage, sailing to Brazil in South America and on to Uruguay.
Now we are rounding the tip of South America in the dangerous waters of the Le Maire Straights, where boats are known to be rolled and sunk in the huge waves and dangerous currents flowing up from Antarctica, the Southern Ocean, and around the infamous Cabo de Hornos!
Our goal is to sail around the world via Cape Horn, and that is where we are headed now. Capturing footage to share this epic adventure with you as we round the horn and venture into the canals and fjords of Patagonia, Chile.
About Our Boat:
We have classic sailing yacht, a J Boats J/46. Like the newer J/45, she is a performance cruiser that can get up and go but is also very comfortable offshore in bluewater. She is faster than most similar sized sailing catamarans and lots of fun to sail, you will surely spill your tea at sea though! She is made of fiberglass and sports a nice wood interior and her interior design is a little less like Ikea than a similar sized Beneteau or Lagoon. She sports a high tech sailing electronics package, the best navigation software, and is set up for off the grid living with a watermaker, lithium batteries, and solar panels and a wind generator.

Risking It All: Preparing for Heavy Weather @ 40° South [Ep. 100]
We are pushing hard during the night, sailing deep into the dark and stormy void of the roaring forties and the South Atlantic Ocean, setting our 4th reef as we prepare for heavy weather and charge offshore toward International Waters and the pirate laden grounds of the Chinese fishing fleet. All the while a storm with possible 9 meter waves and 50 knot winds is approaching us from behind.

Our goal is to sail around the world via Cape Horn, and that is where we are headed now. Capturing footage to share this epic adventure with you as we round the horn and venture into the canals and fjords of Patagonia, Chile.

ESCAPE To The Southern Ocean - The Start Of A 1000 Mile Offshore Sailing Adventure [Ep. 98]
We make final preparations and set sail after repairs in Uruguay in a potentially dangerous but fast weather window, but will the Armada allow us to leave on a non-stop journey to Patagonia? Find out as we finally go sailing toward our goal of rounding Cape Horn to starboard and sailing the Southern Ocean and Chilean Patagonia.
After some comments and questions, here is a link to the industrial touch screen PC we chose to install: https://amzn.to/41v2PNk

How We Made Our Boat’s Bottom Ready To Sail Around The World [Ep. 97]
Bottom painting of our bluewater sailboat from start to finish!
After striking an unidentified floating object (UFO) off the coast of Africa, we still had some repair work to do. That included stripping the barrier coat and applying new bottom paint. We did this in Uruguay to prepare the boat for its sail south, around the world, via Cape Horn.
AD/Advertisement - AkzoNobel provided us with the bottom paint and other coatings applied in this video (International Galverette, International Intergard Yacht, International Intertuf, and International Micron Premium).
Learn More Here: https://www.yachtcoatings.com/en/gb/that-feeling/sailing-sweet-ruca
Previously on our boat, we were using AkzoNobel’s SeaHawk products we paid for ourselves, which were performing very well. After striking the UFO and damaging our rudder and hull, we needed to do a more comprehensive inspection of the entire hull, which included removing all of the bottom paint. This is an expensive and time-consuming process, which was not in our original budget to sail around the world, and insurance provides no coverage so far offshore. We were completely on our own. We took a chance and reached out to AkzoNobel asking if they would sponsor our channel, as at the time we were in Itajai, Brazil, and we are huge fans of The Ocean Race and knew of their involvement in a previous race. Did we think maybe we can tie something in? We were thankful to receive a reply and they agreed to provide us with the products and offset some of the costs.
Before we could complete the project in Brazil, our visas ran out, so we had to call an audible and move the painting to Piriapolis, Uruguay. This is where having a company with worldwide product coverage really came in handy. In South America, it can be extremely difficult to source specific brands and parts for your cruising sailboat. Luckily we were able to find a great assortment of quality International Paints to use on our boat in Uruguay.
We were also happy to find International Micron Premium. Which is a polishing bottom paint. We knew we wanted ablative paint rather than hard paint as we feel it performs better overall. It also allows for hauling the boat if needed and spending time on the hard without a repaint. Lastly, it requires less diving, just sailing at speed washes away any growth, which increases safety, especially sailing in the cold and dark waters of the southern ocean and fjords of Patagonia, Chile.
We feel Micron is one of the best polishing bottom paints on the market and already had experience sailing on boats with Micron on board in the USA and knew it performed well. We had also already used Interlux InterProtect 2000E to fair our keel and completed a bottom on our Melges 24 with VC Performance Epoxy. We were familiar with working with the products and knew they worked well, as we would never put a product on our boat or accept sponsorship of something we wouldn't feel safe using ourselves, be happy with the performance, or recommend to a friend.
The process included:
Hauling and Blocking the Boat
Remove all old bottom paint back to the existing barrier coat.
Inspect and make any needed repairs.
Apply New Barrier Coat
Sanding and Fairing
Application of New Bottom Paint
Launching the Boat
Visit Our Blog About The Process: https://sweetruca.com/why-we-chose-micron-premium-bottom-paint-how-we-applied-it/

About Us
It was never part of the plan to make videos on YouTube or become influencers, but we are so excited that we decided to create content. We love to share our knowledge and experiences with you! We have all types of videos from fixing repairs, to sail trim, to relaxing videos to asmr long form sailing content. Come sail away with us every Sunday Morning.
Kate and Curtis both learn how to sail when they were young. Kate was a junior sailor in Opti's and 420's while Curtis went cruising in the Great Lakes with his family. We met while sailing in a Melges 24 regatta and have been sailing together ever since. The first time we went cruising together as a couple was on a friends borrowed J Boats J 105 in the North Channel of Lake Huron and Canada (part of the Great Loop). Those few weeks, and watching other channels like Gone With the Wynns, Sailing Uma, Project Atticus, Delos, Nahoa, and Sailing La Vagabonde, convinced us that the sailing life was for us.
We bought our boat, a J Boats J/46, in 2019 after spending years searching for the perfect bluewater sailboat to sail around the world. We were interested in a catamaran and monohulls, but loved the performance cruising design of the J(it is faster than most cruising catamarans). We spent six months refitting her in Rhode Island, before selling our house and cars, quitting our jobs, and leaving land life for good to become digital nomads, with the goal of sailing around the world via Cape Horn.
We have since navigated over 12,000 miles together, through storms, big waves, pandemics, and lockdowns. We sailed to Maine, the Bahamas, the Caribbean, Grenada, Sint Maarten, the Azores, Canary Islands, and Brazil, on our way south to Uruguay, Argentina, and Chile to sail around Cape Horn and into the Patagonia fjords.
We never intended to become influencers or start a new YouTube sailing channel, but now it is what we do. We love sharing our experience and adventures with you. We have learned to fly the drone and edit videos, trying to produce relaxing and listenable videos for you to sail away and watch at home while having coffee on Sunday mornings. We hope we can inspire you to achieve your life goals and cross off those bucket list items also!

What is real boat life? Most of the videos out there focus on floating around the Caribbean or Bahamas in a bikini. Now, that is surly life on a boat, but is it real? Sailing from island to island on a sunny day makes for shiny happy videos, but if one wants to sail around the world and liveaboard, they need to be prepared for some real singlehanded, solo, and doublehanded couples offshore sailing, which tends to be a little more like this. There are no bikini models in this video, just hardcore cold weather sailing in life jackets and foul weather gear!

Sailing Yacht Encounters Illegal Chinese Fishing Boat Offshore In Heavy Seas #shorts
We have a close encounter with large illegal Chinese fishing boats (poachers) while sailing in heavy seas 150 miles off the coast of Uruguay during a winter storm in the South Atlantic Ocean.
The fishing boats were later pursued by the Uruguay Navy and Coast Guard, caught, and arrested. These boats were maneuvering dangerously and aggressively on a collision course with our sailboat, in heavy seas and low visibility, during a southern ocean storm, while sailing at night, in disregard of international navigational rules, and with improper AIS signals.
