Sappers have repeatedly received requests from local farmers to inspect their farmland for the presence of explosive objects. The airfield is guarded by significant air defence systems and eyewitnesses reported no rockets were seen. A source in the Russian military department said the main reason for the explosion is a violation of fire safety requirements and there are no signs or evidence of intentional impact on ammunition. Russian MoD initially said: "At About 3:20 PM on the territory of the airfield 'Saki' near the settlement of Novofedorovka, Crimea: several aviation munitions detonated in a storage site. As a result of the explosion, no one was injured. Aviation equipment at the airfield was not damaged."
