The Face Of Faithfulness: John.
Hey everyone and welcome to Refinery Life Church.
“Beneath the Cross of Jesus” is the theme for this series that consists of eight biographical sermons about the people who were there when Jesus was dying on the cross.
Today’s message is titled The Face Of Faithfulness: John.
Christianity began with a group of men gathered by Jesus, but at the cross Christianity resembled a woman’s movement.
Of the twelve men Jesus made apostles, only one was faithful to the end.
Four faithful women stood with this one man until the end.
One of them was Mary, Jesus’ mother.
Her sister was there also.
Mary Magdalene was another of the four, and with her was the wife of Clopas.
But tonight we want to focus our attention on John.
His face beneath the cross is the face of faithfulness.
A study of John’s presence at the cross will help us in our pursuit of faithfulness.

The Face Of Failure, Simon Peter.
Hey everyone and welcome to Refinery Life Church.
“Beneath the Cross of Jesus” is the theme for this series that consists of eight biographical sermons about the people who were there when Jesus was dying on the cross.
Today’s message is titled The Face Of Failure, Simon Peter.
Any of us could have done what Peter did.
Failure as a disciple does not require exceptional weakness or extreme character flaws.
This careful record of Peter’s failure is a good reminder of this fact.
Peter, a chief apostle, was present at the cross as a failure.
Let’s review the facts we know about Peter so that we can put his failure into proper perspective.
He joined the followers of Jesus very early after his brother, Andrew, brought him to Jesus.
He gave up a fishing business to become a fisher of men.
Jesus chose him to be one of the twelve apostles and later included him in the inner circle.
He was present at the transfiguration of our Lord and was an eyewitness of most of his miracles.
He has received personal instruction from the Lord on a daily basis for over three years before his failure.
Peter had not always been a failure.
He was the one who gave the bold confession that so delighted Jesus’ heart.
Peter had never been without words before.
But now under the pressure of the circumstance, facing the scrutiny of the group in the courtyard of the high priest, he vehemently denied three times that he knew the Lord.
Though he had loved the Lord, he denied Him.
Most of us who have been disciples a while can identify with Peter.
We know the pain of failure.
We can learn from Peter’s experience.

The Face Of Favour, Simon of Cyrene.
Welcome to Refinery Life Church.
“Beneath the Cross of Jesus” is the theme for this series that consists of eight biographical sermons about the people who were there when Jesus was dying on the cross.
Today’s message is titled The Face Of Favour, Simon of Cyrene.
Were you there when they crucified my Lord?
Simon of Cyrene was.
As we study the faces beneath the cross, we find the face of this favoured man.
He carried the cross to Golgotha, where Jesus was crucified.
We will use our imaginations this evening to fill in some of the details that are implied and see Simon’s story as it may have been.
Simon was born into a dedicated Jewish home in the North African city of Cyrene.
His parents expressed their faith at his birth by naming him Simon, the name of one of the famous sons of Jacob the patriarch.
As Simon grew into manhood, he probably dreamed of going to Jerusalem to observe Passover.
Such a pilgrimage was the aspiration of all the faithful Hebrew people scattered across the world.
Finally, Simon the Cyrene had the opportunity and was about to realise his dream.
We can imagine his heart beating with excitement as he entered the Holy City for the first time.
when he arrived in Jerusalem, he found the city in an uproar.
Everyone was talking about the teacher from Galilee.
they were sharp divided over Jesus’ identity.
Some were certain that He was the long awaited Messiah, but others considered Him a false prophet.
There were reports that the leaders of the people were plotting His death.
On the day of the great Passover, Simon stumbled on a strange spectacle as he entered the city.
He saw a noisy crowd gathered around a group of soldiers.
In the middle of the soldiers was an obviously weary man dragging a Roman cross.
Most of the crowd were heckling the condemned Man.
The soldiers were prodding Him to hurry Him up.
Anyone watching could see that He was about to fall under the weight of the cross.
when Simon saw what was happening, he decided to stay in the shadows.
Just then the soldiers decided they had had enough of the slow pace of the tired criminal.
They wanted to finish their assignment.
They looked around for someone to carry the cross, and their eyes fell on Simon.
One of them grabbed Simon.
“You!” He growled.
“You take this cross out to the hill.”
Because he was a Jewish man, Simon was powerless to refuse.
Roman soldiers had the power to conscript any non Roman anytime they pleased.
Reluctant and embarrassed, Simon shouldered the cross and followed the soldiers to Golgotha.
Maybe was the outcry of the women that caused Simon to take a second look at the condemned Man.
Somewhere along the way, he became aware that he was carrying the cross of Jesus of Nazareth.
It is easy for us to see that the soldiers unknowingly granted Simon tremendous favour.
Any of us who know Jesus would have been glad to carry the cross.
Yet in a real sense the opportunity to bear His cross is always with us.
The cross symbolised all of the shame and disapproval that accompanied the life and death of Christ.
The ross was what it cost our Lord to do the will of His Father.
If we choose to walk in His ways, we, too, will bear His cross.
This event changed Simon’s life forever.
What a favoured man he was!

The Face Of Fortune, Barabbas.
Hey everyone and welcome to Refinery Life Church.
“Beneath the Cross of Jesus” is the theme for this series that consists of eight biographical sermons about the people who were there when Jesus was dying on the cross.
Today’s message is titled The Face Of Fortune, Barabbas.
Pilate presented Barabbas to the crowd as an alternative, seeking to escape his responsibility the ordeal.
His training in Roman justice made it difficult for him to condemn an innocent man.
Pilate’s offer takes on special significance if both of these men had the same name.
Many scholars believe that the full name of Barabbas was Jesus Barabbus.
There is some written evidence to support this.
And if this was the case, the crowd had to choose between Jesus of Nazareth and Jesus Barabbas.
The face of Barabbas is truly the face of good fortune.
Never has a better thing happened to a man on the day of his expected crucifixion.
Jesus of Nazareth probably died on the cross that had been prepared for Jesus Barabbas.
When the Sabbath came, Jesus was lying in a tomb and Barabbas was sleeping in his own bed.
This graphically sets forth the central truth of the gospel, “Christ died for us.”

To Err Is Human, To Forgive Is Divine.
Hey everyone and welcome to Refinery Life Church.
We are in a continual process of being changed into the image of Jesus Christ.
This month we are discussing Jacob’s son Joseph, I have titled this series “Lessons from Joseph.”
Today’s message is titled To Err Is Human, To Forgive Is Divine.
One more story remains in this series from the life of Joseph.
Events moved rapidly after the cupbearer finally told Pharaoh about the prisoner who had such wonderful ability because of his God.
Pharaoh called on Joseph to interpret his dream.
Soon the Hebrew boy was made prime minister of the land, second only to the king himself.
Later his brothers came to Egypt to but grain during the famine.
For a short time, Joseph played cat and mouse with them, but at last he revealed himself to them.
One of the noblest statements in God’s Word is Joseph’s address to his brothers.
Not only did he forgive them for what they had done, but he went so far as to say that God was actually using them in His plan when they sold him as a slave.
Of course, Joseph’s forgiveness did not lessen their guilt, but it may have diminished their fears of his possible revenge.
This evening, let’s look at some truths from this story.

Ingratitude Is a Hard Hearted Foe.
Hey everyone and welcome to Refinery Life Church.
We are in a continual process of being changed into the image of Jesus Christ.
This month we are discussing Jacob’s son Joseph, I have titled this series “Lessons from Joseph.”
Today’s message is titled Ingratitude Is a Hard Hearted Foe.
Even while he was in prison, Joseph’s impeccable character shone through.
The prison warden recognised Joseph’s integrity and put him in charge of all the prisoners.
Like Potiphar, the warden gave Joseph free rein, and God blessed him even in prison.
Some time later, the chief cupbearer and the chief baker were thrown in prison, and once again dreams entered Joseph’s life.
One night the cupbearer and the baker both had strange dreams, and the next morning Joseph interpreted their dreams correctly.
The cupbearer was restored to his position, but the baker was killed.
Joseph refused to take credit for his wisdom but gave it to God.
Also, he asked the cupbearer to remember him kindly and mention him to Pharaoh.
The cupbearer agreed, but after he was restored to favour, he failed to keep his promise.
Let’s look at this story more closely and find some truths.

Dream, but Don’t Make Dreams Your Master.
Good evening everyone and welcome to Refinery Life Church.
We are in a continual process of being changed into the image of Jesus Christ.
This month we are discussing Jacob’s son Joseph, I have titled this series “Lessons from Joseph.”
Today’s message is titled Dream, but Don’t Make Dreams Your Master.
Joseph, like Jacob, stands out as one of the most interesting and exciting characters of the Old Testament.
All but one of Joseph’s brothers were born of different mothers, making for a diversity of interest and intensely competitive spirit among the brothers and ultimately leading to hostility.
The tension between Joseph and his brothers is reminiscent of the conflict between Jacob and Esau.
Even though Jacob and Esau had their differences, in the end they seemed to have become reconciled to the point that they did not seek to harm one another.
Joseph, on the other hand, remained a possible threat to his brothers, at least in their minds, until the very end.
Although he had forgiven them and given them positions of privilege in Egypt, they feared that after their father died Joseph would retaliate for the evil they had done to him.
Today’s Scripture reading concerns Joseph’s early years.
God had given him several meaningful dreams, and he boldly reported them to his family.
Even though we recognise that Joseph was chosen of God for a great mission, he was still a human being, and we are not irreverent to point out certain signs of his immaturity.

Start Over Where You Began.
Hey everyone and welcome to Refinery Life Church.
We are in a continual process of being changed into the image of Jesus Christ.
Jacob, originally a crook, had a life changing experience with God.
Lessons from a changed man is this months theme.
Today’s message is titled Start Over Where You Began.
To Jacob, Bethel was more than a geographic location.
It was the place where he had first come to know the Lord in a personal way.
All of us have our Bethels.
For some of us, it is where we accepted Jesus Christ as personal Saviour.
We may also have smaller Bethels in our lives, those times when we awakened to a more relationship with God.
Whatever Jacob may have known about God before his Bethel experience, we do not know.
We can be certain, however, that this was the dearest place on earth to Jacob, because there he entered into a relationship with the Lord that, though clouded over at times by sin, remained his moment of inspiration that sent him forth with a song in his heart.
Now God wanted Jacob to follow the Jabbok experience with a time of fresh dedication.
He called on him to go back to the place of spiritual origin.
The text does not tell us that God commanded him to do it, but Jacob took his household with him and told them to put away the strange gods they had become attached to during the days in Haran, to purify themselves, and to put on fresh clothes as a symbol of a new spiritual beginning.
How Jacob’s heart must have beat faster when they handed him the various pieces of jewellery that represented dedication to foreign gods and practices.
He hid them and most likely never went back to recover them.
We can find some great teachings in this account.

Fighting For Our Faith.
Hey everyone I’m Gary Hoban and welcome to Refinery Life Church.
We are in a continual process of being changed into the image of Jesus Christ.
Jacob, originally a crook, had a life changing experience with God.
Lessons from a changed man is this months theme.
Today’s message is titled Fighting For Our Faith.
Jacob’s life with Laban was a stormy one.
Surely Laban did not completely despise his son in law, after all, Jacob presented him with a number of grandchildren.
Yet the scheming between the two carried on constantly, and finally Jacob left the country.
Even then, a stormy scene ensued.
But ultimately they “mended their fences,” and Jacob journeyed back to the land of his father and mother.
The scene at Jabot is a strange one.
Jacob sent his company on before him and was left alone.
He was greatly disturbed because he did not know how Esau would receive him.
Jacob prayed earnestly that night, and his experience with the mysterious stranger was no doubt a great part of his encounter with God.
We cannot dismiss this episode as a dream.
Even though we cannot understand it completely, the account is historical.
Who was the mysterious stranger?
Jacob later said concerning the incident that he had “seen God face to face” and we must leave the account there.
Some valuable lessons from this incident stand out to us.

We Reap What We Sow.
Hey everyone and welcome to Refinery Life Church.
We are in a continual process of being changed into the image of Jesus Christ.
Jacob, originally a crook, had a life changing experience with God.
Lessons from a changed man is this months theme.
Today’s message is titled We Reap What We Sow.
The eager lad went with excitement on his journey.
His steps must have been lighter as he anticipated the experiences of a new country.
With the help of the Lord, Jacob immediately found the country where his mother’s relatives lived.
The adrenaline must have been flowing in his system, because when he saw Rachel, he was able, by himself, to roll the stone from the well’s mouth, a task that usually required several men.
When he identified himself to Rachel, she was delighted to know him and ran to tell her father.
Jacob the schemer met his match in Laban, his mother’s brother.
Jacob remained as a guest for a month, but after that Laban suggested that a contract be drawn up for work.
Jacob proposed that he work seven years for Laban’s daughter, and at that time she would become his wife.
However, Jacob did not count on Laban’s craftiness.
The wedding feast was a great one, with all the customers of that day.
The morning after the wedding had been consummated in the darkness of the tent, Jacob discovered that he had slept with Leah, Laban’s elder daughter, rather than Rachel.
Of course he raised great objections, but Laban showed him the “fine print” in the contract and explained that it was a custom of their country never to give the younger daughter in marriage until the first born was wedded.
As a result, Jacob had to serve another seven years working for Rachel.
Naturally Jacob loved Rachel more than Leah.
However, God blessed Leah with many children.
It was a long time before Rachel bore even one child, and then she died giving birth to the second one.
Some great lesson stand out for us from this story.

Finding God For YourSelf
Hey everyone and welcome to Refinery Life Church.
We are in a continual process of being changed into the image of Jesus Christ.
Jacob, originally a crook, had a life changing experience with God.
Lessons from a changed man is this months theme.
Today’s message is titled Finding God for Yourself.
Do you find God, or does God find you?
In a sense it works both ways.
When an evangelist once asked a young boy, “Have you found Jesus?” The bot replied, “Mister, I didn’t know Jesus was lost.”
Of course, that’s true.
On the other hand , god is lost to us if we don’t know Him.
Today’s Scripture reading tells how a young man, away from home for perhaps the first time, discovered God for himself, an experience that surpassed any previous knowledge he may have had of the Lord.
Jacob may have made it all the way to Bethel his first night away from home.
Remember, he was fleeing from Esau and was a young man.
He probably travelled light and fast.
The spot he chose to spend the night was the site of an old Canaanite worship place.
God, however, used this location as a sanctuary for His glory.
Our Lord can always give new meaning to old things, and He delights in transforming the ungodly into something or someone that will bring praise to His name.
Jacob had a marvellous dream that night and awoke to find that his life had new meaning.
For perhaps the first time in his life, God was real to him.
This firsthand experience transformed him and sent him on his way to Haran t=with a new attitude toward life and changed goals.
Some great lessons come to us from this experience.

The Mystery of Pain and Suffering.
welcome to Refinery Life Church.
In every congregation there is at least one person with a broken heart.
One function of the Pastor, the Shepherd is to help bind up the broken hearted.
The theme for our Tuesday evenings this month is “Is There Any Good News For Those Who Suffer?”
Today’s message is titled The Mystery of Pain and Suffering.
Some people see no mystery about the problem of suffering.
They believe that suffering is the result of an inevitable law that every cause produces an effect.
They would reason that suffering is due to some great sin the sufferer has committed.
Christians have a problem with suffering that non Christians do not have.
Christianity proclaims that God is love and that He loves the whole world.
If this is true, why does He permit undeserved suffering?
If God loves and if He has all power, then He should protect us from pain and suffering.
Some have sought to solve this problem by saying that those who suffer have been guilty of some sin and have brought God’s judgement on themselves.
This simplistic solution to a complex question is unsatisfactory and incorrect.
Between our entrance into life and our exit from life, we experience many kinds of pain and suffering, physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, visible, invisible, recognised, and unrecognised.
Many suffer because of natural disasters.
Many suffer because of historical events and decisions that were made in the past.
Many suffer because of decisions and choices made by their ancestors.
We must also recognise that a lot of suffering comes to us because of our personal choices and the choices of others.
What does Jesus teach about pain and suffering?
Does Jesus have any good news for those who suffer?

Is There a Connection between Sin and Suffering?
welcome to Refinery Life Church.
The Lord’s Prayer.
Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name.
Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors.
And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one.
For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.”
In every congregation there is at least one person with a broken heart.

The theme for our Tuesday evenings this month is “Is There Any Good News For Those Who Suffer?”
Today’s message is titled Is There a Connection between Sin and Suffering?
When disaster struck the house of Job, his friends came at greta trouble and inconvenience to comfort and counsel him.
Job’s friends held to the traditional thoughts of their day, which in many respects are still the thoughts of our day.
They believed that God always rewards righteousness.
They believed that God always punishes wickedness.
They perceived that righteousness always pays off with peace, prosperity, popularity, plenty, and permanence.
Job’s friends saw God as a judge.
They understood Him somewhat in terms of His being a prosecuting attorney or a policeman.
They believed God to be an executioner.
They believed that God’s law was self operating and self executing, and that if you found yourself in great pain and suffering, it was proof that you were a great sinner.
The writer of the book of Job challenges all of our simple solutions to the complex questions that plague us when we are faced with pain and trouble.
The easy answer is usually the incorrect answer.
While recognising that sin ultimately results in suffering, when you study the book of Job, you cannot help but conclude that not all suffering is the direct result of sin.
Job is an excellent example of this truth.

How Do You Face Trouble?
welcome to Refinery Life Church.
In every congregation there is at least one person with a broken heart.
One function of the Pastor, the Shepherd is to help bind up the broken hearted.
The theme for our Tuesday evenings this month is “Is There Any Good News For Those Who Suffer?”
Today’s message is titled How Do You Face Trouble?
Is there any good news for those who suffer?
In times when trouble strikes, we need to take inventory to see if there is any good news that can cheer our hearts and help us bear the burden of pain.
Trouble and suffering are facts of life that all of us must cope with sooner or later.
An incurable disease may afflict someone we love or even us personally.
A financial disaster may wipe us out financially.
A domestic tragedy may tear apart our home.
Fatal accidents occur on life’s highways, and there are dead end streets where all hopeful expectations are brought to a stop.
How should Christians cope with suffering and trouble?
When trouble comes, some people turn to religion, hoping it will deepen and strengthen their faith.
Others turn away from religion in disappointment and despair.
Still others turn against religion in hate and cynicism.
How do people cope with pain and trouble?
Some yell and scream and swear.
Some develop a headache and take a Panadol.
Some drink or take drugs that enable them to escape the pain of reality temporarily.
Some pray and trust God.
What will you do when trouble comes?
Will you turn to God?
Will you turn against God?
Let’s take a look at Job, the ultimate example of a man who struggled with suffering in the times before Christ.

The Management Of Pain
Hey everyone I’m Gary Hoban and welcome to Refinery Life Church.
In every congregation there is at least one person with a broken heart.
One function of the Pastor, the Shepherd is to help bind up the broken hearted.
The theme for our Tuesday evenings this month is “Is There Any Good News For Those Who Suffer?”
Today’s message is titled The Management of Pain.
From cradle to grave, we spend much of our existence trying to avoid pain.
If you watch television commercials, you have probably noticed that many offer advice about how to manage pain.
Such solutions are temporary.
Some peel try to escape pain through drugs and alcohol, but they find that their pain increases instead of disappearing.
Still others stoically just “grin and bear” their pain.
How do you manage pain?
Until next time

I really want to encourage you to be diligent with your Bible study time, because God has so much more for us than we can get from just going to church once or twice a week and hearing someone else talk about the Word.
When you spend time with God, your life will change in amazing ways, because God is a Redeemer.
Theres nothing thats too hard for Him, and He can make you whole, spirit, soul and body!
You’re important to God, and you’re important to us at www.refinerylife.org
When it comes to prayer, we believe that God wants to meet your needs and reveal His promises to you.
So whatever you’re concerned about and need prayer for we want to be here for you! Or even if you just want to say Hi, you can contact us
