The Cost of Everything | The cost of subway systems
On this episode of The Cost of Everything, host Christy Ai and Professor Dr. Allan Zarembski delve into the essential role of metro systems in urban mobility. They highlight how these systems offer economical commuting compared to vehicle ownership, despite the significant costs involved in building subways. Factors such as city size, complexity, and bureaucratic challenges contribute to these expenses, impacting funding for maintenance and expansion, particularly in areas with low population density outside major cities.

Direct Impact | Unending tension: Soviet - US relations & their implications for today
On this episode of Direct Impact, Rick Sanchez sits down with history professor and co-creator of the docuseries “The Untold History of the United States” Peter Kuznick to discuss the history of U.S. - Soviet relations. The two engage in a riveting conversation about the reasons for the Cold War and those who pushed and profited from this undeclared tension that threatened more than a few times to spill over into a hot war. The two also discuss how the legacy of the period still poisons modern attempts to develop peaceful relations between Russia and the United States, and what this means for the NATO alliance. Don’t miss it!

Miracle rescue caught on camera after baby falls from 4th floor
This is the heart-stopping moment a 7-month-old baby was rescued three storeys up in Chennai, India. The baby had reportedly fallen from a fourth floor apartment, and was clinging onto the edge of a tin roof.
As neighbors gathered round with a sheet to catch the baby should the worst happen, a pair of daring men climbed up and managed to grab the baby by her diaper, to the relief of everyone watching.
According to reports, the baby sustained minor injuries to her arm and leg, and was taken straight to the hospital, with onlookers describing her survival as a ‘miracle’.

M1 Abrams tank added to display at Victory Museum
Russia has two new exhibits at the Victory Museum in Moscow. Or, from a certain point of view, the US has two new exhibits. An M1 Abrams tank and an M1150 Assault Breacher Vehicle have both been added to the exhibition of armor and weapons captured during the conflict with Ukraine. Both of these examples were captured by Russian servicemen in the Avdeevka area.
The M1 and the M1150 will join their compatriots, a Bradley infantry fighting vehicle, an M1151 Enhanced Armament Carrier, an M113 Armored Personnel Carrier, and many more US-made vehicles. Also on display are a German Leopard 2A6 tank and Marder IFV, and several British, French, Swedish, Czech, Australian, Austrian, Finnish and South African and – yes, even Ukrainian – vehicles.
Tweet option:
A US-made M1 Abrams tank and an M1150 Assault Breacher Vehicle are the latest additions to the exhibition at the Victory Museum in Moscow, which includes dozens of vehicles from almost as many countries, all captured in the conflict with Ukraine.

Muslim protesters call for ‘caliphate’ in Germany
Thousands of protesters gathered in the German city of Hamburg on Saturday, calling for Islamic rule in the country and carrying signs reading ‘Caliphate is the solution.’ They also carried copies of German newspaper Bild, with various stories concerning Muslims covered over with red paint.
The protest was organized by Muslim Interaktiv, a group currently under investigation for ‘extremism,’ according to reports. The group’s leader, Joe Adade Boateng, said Germany needed a ‘righteous caliphate’ to combat what he says is the misrepresentation of Muslims in German media, while a social media post by the group said the demonstration was intended to take a stand against the ‘demonization’ of Muslims in Germany.
‘We will raise our voices together, inshallah,’ the group wrote on X. ‘Together against Islamophobic reporting, both in recent weeks and in recent months.’

‘Juan’ meme comes to life as horse rescued from flooded house by crane
As floodwaters invaded parts of Russia at the weekend, the residents of the ‘Osinka’ nonprofit garden partnership in Orenburg made sure a very special resident was taken care of – a horse. At first he was brought indoors for shelter, but when the waters rose he was brought upstairs, presumably given a room, and allowed to wait out the flood from the safe vantage point of the balcony. If this sounds like a potential explanation for the inexplicable ‘juan.’ meme, you’d be right.
Not content with being a recycled meme and the butt of ‘why is there a horse up there?’ questions for the rest of his life, the horse desired to escape, however horses have a weakness: stairs. The going up part is generally alright, but a combination of unfavorable weight distribution, inability to extend their forelegs down and terrible depth perception means that horses find going downstairs extremely difficult. The easier option is the crane, which not only got the horse safely down to Earth, but also provided for an even more inexplicable potential meme.

Shoigu inspects new anti-drone guns as arms production increases
Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu was shown one of Russia’s new anti-drone guns as he announced an increase in weapons production. Shoigu, along with chief of the Russian Armed Forces, Valery Gerasimov, got the chance to inspect some of the latest advances in Russian weaponry designed to counter the threat of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). This included a rather large, precision-sighted anti-drone gun and a smaller UAV able of firing munitions in multiple directions at the same time.
‘It is necessary to increase the volume and quality of weapons and military equipment supplied to the troops,’ Shoigu said during a meeting with military officials, adding that ‘state contracts with industrial enterprises have been concluded.’
