Welcome to Sermon on the Mount. I'm Jeremy Bacon, no relation to Kevin, and the goal of this channel is to unpack little snippets of the Sermon on the Mount to try to help you hear what Jesus is saying to you. In fact, in this, as our first video, I want to focus on the idea of audience reaction to this sermon. If we really hear what Jesus is saying, it makes sense that our reaction should probably be about the same as the reaction of the people who are actually sitting on the hill in front of Jesus. You can imagine that scene. There's a gently sloping, grassy hill. Okay, the picture isn't actually the Mount of Beatitudes, it's just a pretty grassy hill. But for them, there were, it was a nice clear day. There were birds, there were flowers, Jesus will literally point to them in the course of doing this sermon. It all sounds very serene. But when Jesus is done and the crowds head home, their reaction isn't, wasn't that a nice way to spend the afternoon? The reason I started this whole project that led to a book on the Sermon on the Mount was because I was preparing for a teaching trip. I was planning to go do some Bible training for a group of Maasai pastors in southern Kenya. I'd been there a couple times before, so I had a decent sense of where the guys were at, and I decided I wanted to do Just some lessons on basic Bible interpretation. Just looking at the nuts and bolts principles for understanding the Bible. Now, when I've seen this done before, usually we just jump all over scripture, just cherry picking whatever verse happens to illustrate an exegetical principle really well. But that always felt like cheating to me. I mean, if this stuff is legit, it should work with any text, right? We have to focus on both. The trees are the specific teachings Jesus gives on how we should live life. But if you just focus on them, they can start to look like pie in the sky, unrealistic nonsense. I mean, sure, they sound nice, but no one can actually do that. That's the wrong perspective. To get the right perspective, we have to look at the forest. But if we just focus on the forest, it's all abstract. The rubber never meets the road, and so it never really makes a difference. So what's the point?
