We took a trip across the province to surprise my in laws. The crazy part of this trip is we did it in the middle of our Canadian winter. The roads were not great, but winter seems to be a slow time for both my husband and I. We planned to have a facetime with my in laws at 8pm this night and made a 14 hour trip in one go and managed to get to their door for exactly pm. While out cleaning out the barn from our recent loss of our chickens I can't help but step back and reflect on the incident. Often times these discouragements can set us back or make us give up. When I step back from most situations, I can reflect back gain encouragement and hope from most situations but not always taking it just for face value. As a child of God I am often reminded how many times He is right there beside me, in every situation. During most of our homesteading journey we come across challenges and disappointments. Knowing that you have strength from a higher power, that being God, I know that I can keep going and things will work out. Thanks for watching. Loosing chickens to a predator is not an easy thing. We have been trying to figure out which predator killed our flock of chickens and are almost certain it was a fisher. It not only killed our flock but the next day killed our neighbors chickens too. This is the first time in 5 years we have ever lost an entire flock of chickens to a predator. There is no other way to describe such a tragedy than it sucked. Worst chicken experience ever! Canada has many chicken predators and it can be very difficult to tell which one it was. At first I was certain it was a weasel but I am now convinced it was a fisher. Any ideas you think it was? Anyways, I am sorry to give you such a terrible update on the chickens, but this is part of owning chickens and I wanted to share with you all the emotions and disappointments we felt that day. Living in Canada, most people believe when you are winterizing your chicken coop you need to have a heater or heat lap. Even during those -30c and -40c days you do not need to add heat to your coop. Winterizing your chicken coop is not a difficult as you might think. Making sure your chickens have fresh thawed water, proper nutrients, and protection and shelter from the wind are your three most important aspects. Today's chicken vlog is interesting. We have baby chicks for the first time over the winter months and we have lost one chick for an unknown reason and could not find it nor any trace of its predator. Today we have lost our barred rock chick and head out on a search for it. Our daughter was devastated when she went out to find the barred rock chick was nowhere to be found. We lock our chickens up during the winter, so it was truly a mystery. This chick was missing for more than 24 hours. Homesteading has become really popular over the last few years, for a lot of good reasons. Homesteading has given people the opportunity to take more control over their spending, ability to cut back on going to the store, ability to provide their families with healthy food options and has given many people a sense of accomplishment and purpose. My views may be different from others, but the common understanding of homesteading is there. I think it is kind of funny to call it homesteading when just decades ago this was just the lifestyle for everyone. I truly believe we don't need to live like our grandparents or great grandparents, to be considered a homestead, but looking at modern day homesteading as we have more opportunities today.
