Astyanax (NES) Playthrough
Astyanax (NES) Playthrough
A playthrough of Jaleco's 1990 NES platforming action game, Astyanax.
Alright, first thing up is the age old question: how do you pronounce "Astyanax"?
\ ə-ˈstī-ə-ˌnaks \ "Uh-stai-uh-naks"
Betcha feel smarter already, huh?
Astyanax was released at the same time as Jaleco's arcade title, The Astyanax. They aren't the same game, but are instead two games based on the same general style of play. This also happens to be the same style and play as you'll find in The Legendary Axe 1 and 2 on the TurboGrafx-16. They all share the muscled meathead swinging huge weapons at things, and they all share the charging gauge that dictates the power of each hit. The NES and TG16 games differ the most from the arcade game in their pacing - the console titles all tend to be slower and more deliberately paced than the quarter muncher was.
Though they're not all technically related to one another, they were all developed by the same team at Aicom within a year or two of each other. It's apparent that Aicom found a system they liked and stuck with it for awhile. I'm also guessing that Astyanax was a test-bed for some of storytelling ideas that we later saw again in Vice: Project Doom, another Aicom title.
Astyanax on the NES is a standard platforming game with upgradable weapons, special attacks, life bars - if you've played an NES game released between 1988-1993, you know all the basics already. It plays competently despite its questionable hit-boxes and super-stiff animation - the charge bar forces you consider what you're doing (button mashing will get you killed quickly!), and the magic spells do a nice job at helping you side-step any ugly surprises - nobody likes being bounced backwards into a pit, right?
The difficulty level is nicely balanced. It's not so easy that you'll just race through, but it's never particularly frustrating or difficult. It's a good game to throw in and chill with if you don't want to be swearing at the NES within five minutes.
The biggie that really differentiates this one from the arcade game is the cinematic plot scenes that show up constantly. Sure, they look like low-rent pretenders when put up against Ninja Gaiden, but there's a lot of charm to be found in the stilted dialogue, neon colors, and poorly drawn portraits. I still get a kick out of them.
Astyanax isn't a top 10 title, but the nostalgia can be strong with this one. It's very good at putting a smile on your face as it reminds you of times long past.

Cool World (NES) Playthrough
Cool World (NES) Playthrough
A playthrough of Ocean's 1993 license-based action game for the NES, Cool World.
Cool World for the NES was one of the many games produced by Ocean to be based on the 1992 movie starring Brad Pitt and Kim Basinger. The movie was a box office flop that got crucified by critics, and the NES game didn't exactly set the world on fire when it finally released a year later.
The SNES version ( • Cool World (SNES) Playthrough - Ninte... ) met with a rather tepid reception, but the popular gaming magazines never even bothered to acknowledge the existence of the NES game. Rightfully so, I say.
Remember the movie's awkward tagline? "Holli would if she could ...and she will." I suppose the intention was to sum up the movie's plot - that Holli, a trashy Jessica Rabbit wannabe, wanted to become real, and she was willing to do anything to make that happen - with a spicy bit of innuendo.
The game follows that same basic idea: you play as Frank Harris, a cop who has to stop her from turning herself human with the "golden spike" (oh, more innuendo, how clever!) and unleashing the "doodles" (ah, what a knee slapper!) on the real world.
Doing this on the NES involves collecting map pieces that, when put together, reveal Holli's location. You can play the first four stages in any order, and once the map is complete, you move on to the Ocean Tower for the final showdown. The goal of each stage is to collect the map piece from the boss, but since your pen is useless against these guys, you'll need to gather a stockpile of special weapon ammo before throwing down the gauntlet.
There are a few irritatingly arbitrary "puzzles," but the cycle generally goes like this:
1. Frantically run away from swarms of baddies as you search for the pen so you can defend yourself (if the pen doesn't forget to spawn itself).
2. Attempt to interact with every innocuous object you come across in the vain hope that you'll find a way to move forward, only to be insta-killed by a car or electricity.
3. Collect special weapons and candy canes while falling through false platforms into acid vats and bottomless pits.
4. Scream in frustration at the playfield's wonky sense of depth, the fact that attacking and ducking are both assigned to the B button, the inability to move diagonally, the way jumping from a platform to the floor leaves you momentarily stunned, and the flaming trainwreck of a soundtrack.
5. Reach the boss and pelt them with your items (whenever they aren't glitching out) until they drop the map piece, and if you don't have enough items to finish the job, well... it sucks to be you. Unless you have a huge stockpile of extra lives, you might as well hit the reset button.
So yeah, it's understandable that Holli would want to escape Cool World, and I'm confident that she will. It's hardly worth the effort to stop her.
Not cool, Ocean. Not cool at all.

KickMaster (NES) Playthrough
KickMaster (NES) Playthrough
A playthrough of Taito's 1992 action game for the NES, KickMaster.
This video shows all three loops of the game for the best ending. Loop 2 begins at 36:07, and Loop 3 begins at 1:13:17.
The wizard Belzed has invaded the kingdom of Lowrel, killed its king and queen, kidnapped its princess, and wiped out its military force. Thonolan, a "kick master," is the sole surviving knight, and it's up to him to defeat Belzed, rescue Princess Silphee, and ensure that she takes her rightful place as the ruler of Lowrel.
KickMaster is a platforming action game that incorporates elements of the beat 'em up and RPG genres. Thonolan's kicking skills will be put to the test as he fights his way through seven monster-infested areas on his way to Belzed's tower. At the start he only knows three moves - a high kick, a leg sweep, and an overhead kick - but as he defeats enemies, gathers experience, and levels up, Thonolan will gain access to a wide range of flashy attacks that would leave even Chuck Norris slackjawed with envy.
But Thonolan is more than just a teal pretty boy with restless legs. He's also an accomplished magician who will learn several useful magic spells over the course of the adventure, including the ability to heal, fly, summon decoys, create energy shields, stop time, and blitz the screen with lightning bolts.
The controls are smooth and the gameplay is fluid, and the variety of moves and spells give you a ton of options in tackling any situation. Thonolan's hit box can feel a bit inconsistent - certain moves leave him open to damage at seemingly random times - but it's not too much of a problem since you can heal at any time so long as you have enough MP in store, and the game isn't particularly difficult, even on the third loop that turns every enemy into a damage sponge.
As you might expect from a game made by KID (who also created Isolated Warrior, Recca, and the GI Joe games), the graphics and sound are top-notch by NES standards. Thonolan's moves are slickly animated, the backgrounds and Castlevania-style bosses sport a ton of detail, and the sample-heavy music is largely excellent throughout.
As dumb as the "guy saves kingdom by kicking everything into oblivion" setup sounds, KickMaster is a great action game backed by an impressively accomplished presentation that's well worth checking out.
