Rebecca (1940)
A timid, young, ladies companion (Joan Fontaine), is on vacation when she meets the handsome and wealthy widower Maxim de Winter (Laurence Olivier), whose wife Rebecca had recently died in a boating accident. The two fall in love, and when Maxim asks her to marry him, she delightedly agrees. Her joy is short-lived, however. When she returns to the de Winter estate, the new Mrs. de Winter discovers that Rebecca still has a strange hold on everyone there.
Rebecca was named Best Picture of the Year by Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 1940, but chances are it could win any year. This brilliant adaption of Daphne du Maurier's celebrated novel won virtually every accolade imaginable, including two Academy Awards and nine other nominations. Thanks to masterful direction by Alfred Hitchcock, this all-time cinema classic is as chilling and dramatic today as when it was first released.

Laura (1944)
Detective Lieutenant Mark McPherson (Dana Andrews) investigates the killing of Laura Hunt (Gene Tierney), found dead on her apartment floor before the movie starts. McPherson builds a mental picture of the dead girl from the suspects he interviews. He is helped by the striking painting of the late lamented Laura hanging on her apartment wall. But who would have wanted to kill a girl with whom every man she met seemed to fall in love? To make matters worse, McPherson finds himself falling under her spell too. Then one night, halfway through his investigations, something seriously bizarre happens to make him re-think the whole case.

The Mayor of Hell (1933)
Not a childhood movie, but definitely one of my favorites.
Five members of a teen-age gang, including leader Jimmy Smith, are sent to the state reformatory, presided over by the melodramatically callous Thompson. Soon, Patsy Gargan, a former gangster appointed deputy commissioner as a political favor, arrives - complete with hip flask and blonde. Gargan falls for activist nurse Dorothy and, inspired by her, takes over the administration to run the place on radical principles. But Thompson, to conceal his years of graft, needs a quick way to discredit Gargan.

McClintock! | John Wayne 1963
This is an HD rerelease, as the previous one unintentionally crappy in resolution.
George Washington McLintock, "GW" to friends and foes alike, is a cattle baron and the richest man in the territory. He anxiously awaits the return of his daughter Becky who has been away at school for the last two years. He's also surprised to see that his wife Katherine has also returned. She had left him some years before without really explaining what he done but she does make the point of saying that she's returned to take their daughter back to the State Capitol with her. GW is highly respected by everyone around him including the farmers who are pouring into the territories with free grants of land and the Indians who are under threat of being relocated to another reservation. Between his wife, his headstrong daughter, the crooked land agent and the thieving government Indian agent, GW tries to keep the peace and do what is best for everyone.

Cyrano De Bergerac (1950)
A childhood favorite of mine.
This classic romantic tragedy comes alive with a stunning performance by Jose Ferrer as the dashing hero whose large nose stands in the way of love. The audacious Cyrano is quick to defend himself against mockery, but is weak and timid in love.
When he falls for the beautiful Roxanne, (Mala Powers), he is frozen with fear. The tongue-twisted Christian, (William Prince), also pursuing Roxanne, commissions Cyrano to write love letters that will win her affection.
Not long until long married to Christian does Roxanne realize the real author of the letters and her true love.
With dialogue of poetic beauty, Cyrano de Bergerac , produced by Stanley Kramer, (The Wild One, High Noon), also features swashbuckling sword fighting sequences and an Academy Award winning performance by Jose Ferrer.
