In this week's North American Ag Spotlight Chrissy Wozniak talks to Camille Grade, the Chief Market Officer at Bushel, shared her invaluable insights into the evolving landscape of agricultural technology and data management. As a key speaker at this year's Women in Agribusiness (WIA) Summit, Camille’s expertise and experience are highly anticipated by attendees eager to understand the intricacies of the "messy middle" of the supply chain.
Camille's journey with Bushel began over a decade ago when she played a pivotal role in transitioning the company from a digital consulting agency to a leading digital product platform focused on the agriculture industry. Since its launch in 2017, Bushel has rapidly grown, now powering over 3,500 grain and ag retail facilities across the U.S. and Canada, representing more than 50% of grain origination in these countries. This remarkable growth has made Bushel one of the largest technology networks in U.S. agribusiness.
During the interview, Camille highlighted the significance of the "messy middle" in the supply chain. While much focus has been on on-farm activities, there is a growing need to invest and innovate in this crucial part of the supply chain. Camille emphasized that efficient data collection, standardization, and organization are vital to maximizing productivity, mitigating risks, and driving profitability across agribusiness value chains. Bushel partners with its agribusiness partners to drive technology adoption among farmers, ensuring that they have the necessary tools and support to integrate new solutions into their operations effectively.
Camille's role in shaping Bushel's brand has been instrumental in its success. She shared her approach to creating a brand that resonates with authenticity in the agriculture sector. By using imagery and words that genuinely reflect the values and realities of farming communities, Bushel has built a strong and trustworthy brand that resonates with its audience.
A highlight of Bushel's efforts to connect with its customers is the annual Bushel Buddy Seat Conference. Camille explained that the name "Buddy Seat" reflects the conference’s goal of fostering close, collaborative relationships with agribusinesses such as ag retailers, grain elevators, full-service cooperatives, and ag lenders. The conference aims to provide valuable insights, share best practices, and strengthen the sense of community among its participants.
Camille Grade’s insights into the future of agricultural data and technology highlight the importance of innovation, collaboration, and authenticity in driving the industry forward. Her contributions to Bushel have not only transformed the company but have also made a significant impact on the broader agribusiness community. As she continues to lead Bushel in its mission to empower farmers and agribusinesses with cutting-edge technology, her influence on the industry is sure to grow.

The Crop with a Million Enemies
Listen to the podcast here - https://www.northamericanag.com/north-american-ag-spotlight - The Crop with a Million Enemies
In this week's North American Ag Spotlight Chrissy Wozniak dives deep into the world of flue-cured tobacco production with a true expert in the field, Dr. J Michael Moore, of the University of Georgia Tobacco Team. J Michael has dedicated his career to developing and implementing educational programs that guide farmers in producing high-quality tobacco. He collaborates closely with county Extension agents, researchers, and various agribusiness groups to deliver research-based recommendations, ensuring that Georgia farmers have the most up-to-date information at their fingertips. He coordinates a team of specialists, providing crucial knowledge on everything from production and harvesting to curing and marketing tobacco. He's the driving force behind the University of Georgia Tobacco Team and the visionary leader of the Georgia-Florida Tobacco Tour, which showcases the latest advancements in tobacco farming.
The Southeastern United States has a rich history rooted in agriculture, with tobacco playing a pivotal role in the region's economic and cultural landscape. The industry, particularly flue-cured tobacco, has seen significant advancements through the years, driven by dedicated professionals and innovative research. Flue-cured tobacco, primarily grown in Georgia and Florida, is known for its high quality and distinct curing process. The leaves are harvested and then cured using heat in a controlled environment, which helps develop the tobacco's characteristic flavor and aroma. This type of tobacco is commonly used in cigarette production, making it a crucial crop for the region's farmers.
Dr. Moore's role involves developing and implementing educational programs focused on producing and managing flue-cured tobacco. By working closely with county Extension agents, researchers, and agribusiness groups, Dr. Moore ensures that farmers receive sound, research-based recommendations. These recommendations cover various aspects of tobacco production, from planting and growing to harvesting and curing.
The UGA Tobacco Team
At the heart of these efforts is the University of Georgia Tobacco Team, which Dr. Moore coordinates. This team is instrumental in providing the most up-to-date and factual information on tobacco production. Their work includes everything from field trials and research studies to on-farm demonstrations and educational workshops. By bringing together specialists with diverse expertise, the UGA Tobacco Team supports agents and growers alike, fostering a community of knowledge and innovation.
The Georgia-Florida Tobacco Tour
One of the most notable initiatives led by Dr. Moore is the annual Georgia-Florida Tobacco Tour. This event showcases the latest research and advancements in tobacco farming, offering growers a firsthand look at new varieties and cultivation techniques. The 2024 tour includes multiple demonstration locations featuring thirteen released varieties grown in Georgia and Florida, as well as research test locations evaluating eleven varieties for black shank resistance. Attendees will also have the opportunity to see the evaluation of a new Orondis premix formulation, applied in transplant water for black shank control and phytotoxicity.
The tour not only provides valuable insights into tobacco farming but also fosters a sense of community among growers. With stops at various farms and facilities, including the Wetherington Farms green leaf boxing, curing, and cured leaf baling facility in Valdosta, participants can share experiences and learn from each other.
For those new to tobacco farming, understanding the basics of flue-cured tobacco production is essential. The process begins with selecting the right variety, tailored to the specific growing conditions of the Southeast. Farmers then prepare the soil, ensuring it is well-drained and rich in nutrients. Planting typically occurs in the spring, with greenhouse grown seedlings carefully transplanted to the field.
Throughout the growing season, farmers must manage pests and diseases, which can significantly impact yield and quality. Regular monitoring and the use of recommended agricultural practices help mitigate these risks. As the plants mature, the leaves are harvested in stages, starting from the bottom and moving upwards.
The curing process is critical to developing the tobacco's flavor. In flue-cured tobacco, leaves are placed in curing barns where they are exposed to controlled heat. This process, which can take several weeks, removes moisture from the leaves and allows the development of desirable characteristics.
The tobacco growing industry in the Southeast continues to thrive, thanks to the dedication and expertise of professionals like Dr. J Michael Moore. Through educational programs, research, and community initiatives, the industry is not only preserving its rich heritage but also embracing innovation to meet the challenges of modern agriculture. As farmers adopt new practices and technologies, the future of flue-cured tobacco in the region looks promising.

How Will Climate Change Affect Agriculture?
Listen to the podcast here - https://www.northamericanag.com/north-american-ag-spotlight How Will Climate Change Affect Agriculture?
This week's North American Ag Spotlight is a little different, last week I attended the 2024 American Agri-women Fly-In in Washington DC. Among the many speakers we heard there was one extraordinarily excellent presentation by University of Delaware Professor Emeritus David R. Legates, Ph.D., C.C.M. His content is thought provoking and important as it flies against the grain of current ideology.
From the Cornwall Alliance for the Stewardship of Creation. David R. Legates presentation was titled, 'How will Climate Change Affect Agriculture?' he did a deep dive into real climate data and how environmental extremism is causing problems for the American farmer and overall global food security. Legates has testified three times as an expert witness before the US Senate Committee on the Environment and Public Works and before both Pennsylvania House and Senate Committee meetings on climate change. He participated in the historic joint USA-USSR protocol for the exchange of climate information in 1990, won the2002 Boeing Autometric Award for the Best Paper in Image Analysis and Interpretationby the American Society of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing, won First Place in the International Statistical Institute (ISI) and ESRI Paper Competition in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and was awarded the Courage in Defense of Science Award in 2015.

Strengthening Ties: Opportunities for the US Agricultural Sector in Africa
Listen to the podcast here - https://www.northamericanag.com/north-american-ag-spotlight
In this week's North American Ag Spotlight Chrissy Wozniak visits with Gary Hirsch, Founder and President of Global Opportunities. Gary shares his insight into how increasing and strengthening our ties with Africa could be an excellent strategy on many levels.
Global Opportunities was founded in order to deepen the economic ties between the people of Africa and the people of the United States and is committed to identifying those opportunities where by working together, jobs and economic growth can be created on both sides while also strengthening the "personal bonds" between Africa's people and the people of the United States. For too long America's adversaries have taken advantage of the United States being economically focused elsewhere and it is time to change this through the building of new partnerships between American and African businesses.
"Gary Hirsch is the founder and President of Global Opportunities Inc., a United States based company dedicated to increasing trade and economic ties between U.S. and developing countries, primarily in the Middle East/North Africa region as well as those in Sub Saharan Africa. Mr. Hirsch developed the concept for Global Opportunities based on his concern that in a globally competitive world, increasing interaction between United States companies and developing economies will not only result in opening up new markets for American products but can also help to provide tremendous opportunities for citizens of the developing world in terms of increasing access to the American market and providing new training opportunities helping to lift local standards of living and address high rates of developing world unemployment.
Mr. Hirsch has an extensive background in political and governmental affairs. With over 30 years of experience in the operation and management of Municipal and County political campaigns, Mr. Hirsch is recognized as one of the leading municipal campaign consultants serving the Central New Jersey region. Having participated in and/or managed numerous successful political campaigns, he has been responsible for all facets of campaign operations including but not limited to message development, fundraising, volunteer recruitment, voter identification and targeting , opposition research, budgeting, grass roots support building, and the development and implementation of all Get Out the Vote efforts leading up to and including Election Day for both local and County candidates and in coordination at the Municipal Level , with campaigns at other levels of government including State Legislature, Governor, Congress and U.S. President. In addition to this experience, Mr. Hirsch also served in the campaign of President Bill Clinton as Regional Field Coordinator in the early primary states of New Hampshire and Maine in parts of Northern New Hampshire and West Central Maine.
In addition to his experience in political campaign operations, Mr. Hirsch also has worked directly for a number of local Mayors in a variety of positions including as an Assistant to the Business Administrator, Special Projects Coordinator and Public Information Officer. Known for his “persistence in getting the job done” he successfully oversaw the completion of both short and long term projects which required more particular oversight and in some cases resulted in significant cost savings to the municipality. Despite his no longer holding an official governmental position, Mr. Hirsch is still called upon for his governmental and political expertise by both elected and party officials in numerous municipalities.
Mr. Hirsch received his Bachelors of Arts degree in Political Science and History as a 1989 graduate of Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey (one of the 9 original universities in the United States that predate the American Revolution) In 1999, he also received his Masters of Science Degree in Public Policy from Rutgers University as well."
