Strengthening Ties: Opportunities for the US Agricultural Sector in Africa
Listen to the podcast here - https://www.northamericanag.com/north-american-ag-spotlight
In this week's North American Ag Spotlight Chrissy Wozniak visits with Gary Hirsch, Founder and President of Global Opportunities. Gary shares his insight into how increasing and strengthening our ties with Africa could be an excellent strategy on many levels.
Global Opportunities was founded in order to deepen the economic ties between the people of Africa and the people of the United States and is committed to identifying those opportunities where by working together, jobs and economic growth can be created on both sides while also strengthening the "personal bonds" between Africa's people and the people of the United States. For too long America's adversaries have taken advantage of the United States being economically focused elsewhere and it is time to change this through the building of new partnerships between American and African businesses.
"Gary Hirsch is the founder and President of Global Opportunities Inc., a United States based company dedicated to increasing trade and economic ties between U.S. and developing countries, primarily in the Middle East/North Africa region as well as those in Sub Saharan Africa. Mr. Hirsch developed the concept for Global Opportunities based on his concern that in a globally competitive world, increasing interaction between United States companies and developing economies will not only result in opening up new markets for American products but can also help to provide tremendous opportunities for citizens of the developing world in terms of increasing access to the American market and providing new training opportunities helping to lift local standards of living and address high rates of developing world unemployment.
Mr. Hirsch has an extensive background in political and governmental affairs. With over 30 years of experience in the operation and management of Municipal and County political campaigns, Mr. Hirsch is recognized as one of the leading municipal campaign consultants serving the Central New Jersey region. Having participated in and/or managed numerous successful political campaigns, he has been responsible for all facets of campaign operations including but not limited to message development, fundraising, volunteer recruitment, voter identification and targeting , opposition research, budgeting, grass roots support building, and the development and implementation of all Get Out the Vote efforts leading up to and including Election Day for both local and County candidates and in coordination at the Municipal Level , with campaigns at other levels of government including State Legislature, Governor, Congress and U.S. President. In addition to this experience, Mr. Hirsch also served in the campaign of President Bill Clinton as Regional Field Coordinator in the early primary states of New Hampshire and Maine in parts of Northern New Hampshire and West Central Maine.
In addition to his experience in political campaign operations, Mr. Hirsch also has worked directly for a number of local Mayors in a variety of positions including as an Assistant to the Business Administrator, Special Projects Coordinator and Public Information Officer. Known for his “persistence in getting the job done” he successfully oversaw the completion of both short and long term projects which required more particular oversight and in some cases resulted in significant cost savings to the municipality. Despite his no longer holding an official governmental position, Mr. Hirsch is still called upon for his governmental and political expertise by both elected and party officials in numerous municipalities.
Mr. Hirsch received his Bachelors of Arts degree in Political Science and History as a 1989 graduate of Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey (one of the 9 original universities in the United States that predate the American Revolution) In 1999, he also received his Masters of Science Degree in Public Policy from Rutgers University as well."

SPECIAL: Impact Farming with Chrissy Wozniak on Ag Policy: ESG, Property Rights & The Attack on Ag
Listen to the podcast here - https://www.northamericanag.com/north-american-ag-spotlight - SPECIAL: Impact Farming with Chrissy Wozniak on Ag Policy: ESG, Property Rights & The Attack on Ag
This week we feature The Impact Farming Show, where host Tracy Brunet discusses the many current attacks on agriculture with Chrissy Wozniak of North American Ag.
Many farmers cannot help but notice that agriculture and our farming practices are increasingly in the spotlight with each passing day.
We all see and hear the headlines.
Sustainability, ESGs, property rights, water and wildlife preservation efforts, carbon concerns, fertilizer reductions, animal rights, lab-grown "meats", plant-based “meats,” and the list goes on and on.
Being in the public eye, and the constant uncertainty that comes from being in the spotlight, has many farmers concerned about the future of farming.
Tracy and Chrissy tackle many of these subjects in a great conversation about policy and its growing impact on agriculture. In this episode:
• Chrissy shares more about her platform, her mission, and why agriculture policy has become an ever-increasing passion for her personally and professionally.
• She shares more about American Agri Women, her involvement, and the work this group of amazing women is doing to represent the best interests of the agriculture industry with our elected officials.
• Tracy and Chrissy chat about how there are several agriculture policies with growing momentum right now and how many of these policies are not even on the radar for most farmers. In this episode, Chrissy focuses on four policies that every farmer should know about.
• Have you heard of ESGs? Many farmers have not. ESG stands for Environmental, Social, and Governance, and Chrissy shares how this impacts our industry.
• As farmers, the land is near and dear to our hearts; without it, we cannot farm. Chrissy shares more about property and water rights policies and encroachments that have been and are currently making waves in the USA and around the World.
• For anyone involved in the agriculture industry, it is no surprise when Chrissy shares that there is an attack on animal agriculture. Between PETA, vegans, and other animal rights activists…animal agriculture has been in the public eye for many years. However, Chrissy goes on to share that our current threats may be coming from within the government. You will not want to miss this.
• Last but not least are fertilizer restrictions. This topic made headlines a while back with the government’s declaration that farmers must reduce their fertilizer usage by 30%. While the conversation seems to have died down for now, this battle is far from over.
• Chrissy shares some final parting thoughts on agriculture policy and whether or not farmers should be concerned. She also shares a few tips for farmers if they want to learn more or get involved.
If you are a farmer, you don’t want to miss this episode!

December 4, 2023
This week on North American Ag Spotlight, Chrissy Wozniak sits down with Cooperative Extension Advisor at University of California, Gerry Spinelli to talk about the water challenges that California growers face in America's Breadbasket.
Gerardo (Gerry) Spinelli is the Production Horticulture Advisor serving the Nursery and Floriculture industry in San Diego. Gerry conducts applied research, extension, and education to improve viability and profitability of the Nursery and Floriculture industry, while conserving natural resources and complying with regulations. The Nursery and Floriculture industry in San Diego county is the first in California for volume of sales and the second in the US.
Gerry’s primary interests are irrigation management and water quality. These themes are a primary concern for growers given the high cost of water and the pressure from local and state water quality regulators. Nitrogen management is another of the advisor’s interests, given its strong relation to water management and its importance in the environmental impact of horticultural industry. Pests, particularly invasive ones are another pressing issue for the industry. With the large volumes of ornamentals moving in and out from other states (primarily Florida and Hawaii), San Diego is particularly exposed to this threat.
Gerry is also interested in other themes unique to San Diego county, including urban agriculture and horticulture in the rural-urban interface and food deserts in low-income areas. Local growers face issues urban development encroaching into rural areas increasing the cost of real estate and the competition for water. Nursery and Floriculture growers in San Diego county have shown the great ability to quickly react to these forces and adapt production practices to keep the industry profitable. Gerry’s primary concern is to conduct a research and extension program that serves the industry in present and future challenges.
Nursery and ornamental production in San Diego county is intensive with almost daily application of water and nutrients. District irrigation water in San Diego County is expensive and groundwater often presents low quality (high salinity). Certain plants require specific irrigation patterns (for example cacti and succulents) and over-irrigation can lead to root disease. An inefficient irrigation system not only wastes water, but also produces runoff that is one of the main concerns of water quality regulators. These constraints are important challenges for growers and irrigation management and water quality compliance is one of the top issues. Good irrigation technology is important, but correct management is even more. Reliance on trained personnel to operate the irrigation system is one of the top concerns for growers.
The Nursery and Floriculture Research and Extension Program with the UCCE of San Diego focuses on field trainings in Spanish to educate irrigators, field trials to measure irrigation system distribution uniformity, and outreach to disseminate management practices to improve water quality.

The Next Wave of Biologicals, the Re-Emergence of RNAi in Agriculture
Listen to the podcast here - https://www.northamericanag.com/north-american-ag-spotlight - The Next Wave of Biologicals, the Re-Emergence of RNAi in Agriculture
This week on North American Ag Spotlight Chrissy Wozniak learns about RNAi technology in agriculture from Todd Hauser, the Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of Trillium Ag. With more than 20 years of experience in biotechnology and gene silencing, Todd is a leader in the movement to modernize crop protection. With an expert understanding of crop science and a passion to protect the long-term global food supply and the environment, Todd brings a unique combination of scientific experience and technological knowledge to Trillium Ag.
Trillium Ag (www.trillium.ag) was founded in 2016 by Todd Hauser and Paul Olivier, two Seattle-area scientists and entrepreneurs with a more then 50 years of combined experience in bio-technology and RNA Interference (RNAi). Their goal was to unlock the potential for a safer and more sustainable approach to farming by creating a revolutionary new class of biologicals that target pests and provide superior crop protection. Leveraging their scientific expertise and new developments in RNAi technology, Trillium’s co-founders recognized an opportunity to develop a crop protection platform that is greener, more effective and provides the answer to agriculture’s escalating pest problem.
Traditional approaches to crop protection, such as synthetic chemicals and bacterial toxins, are in rapid decline. Due to increasing pest resistance, as well as regulatory and consumer pressures, there is an urgent need for new crop protection strategies in order to avoid continued worldwide crop losses of $220 billion annually. The Trillium Ag team understood that the agricultural industry was facing a growing problem and it was critical to uncover a solution in order to secure the world’s long-term food supply. Tapping cutting-edge science and modern technology, Trillium Ag has developed Agrisome, the future of crop protection.
Trillum Ag’s patented Agrisome technology is a revolutionary crop protection platform that employs first-of-its-kind biologicals to target agriculture’s most problematic pests, including, but not limited to, the lepidoptera and hemiptera insect classes. Alone, these two orders of insects are responsible for $50 billion in crop losses across the globe annually. Leveraging innovative RNAi science, Trillium Ag’s breakthrough platform delivers a scalable, adaptable and stacked line of crop defense, providing a sustainable and biodegradable solution in the fight against crop-targeting pests.
Agrisome utilizes naturally-derived protein coated RNA molecules creating a new class of biologicals that address and solve challenges that have hindered prior RNAi-derived crop protection attempts. Agrisome targets and activates a pests own naturally occurring processes through gene silencing, unlocking a safer and more sustainable approach to farming. Offering a topical and seed trait based product platform, Agrisome serves as a replacement for synthetic chemical pesticides and is poised to transform the agricultural industry.
Since the discovery of RNAi was awarded the Nobel Prize in 2006, significant advancements in RNAi-derived pharmaceuticals have been realized, but thus far, RNAi has been unable to make a meaningful impact in agriculture. RNAi technology as it pertains to crop protection has been fraught with failure due to bioavailability and commercialization challenges. Agrisome innovatively combines protein and RNA into self-forming and self-directed entities, providing a solution to these prior problems and an answer to previously unmet crop protection needs.
Agrisome has proven efficacy in both in vitro and in vivo models and Trillium Ag is currently collaborating with the industry’s top commercial and academic leaders to further confirm commercial feasibility and broad scale agricultural application. In addition, Trillium Ag’s pipeline, which is based on naturally-derived protein coated RNA molecules, includes added sustainable bio-agriculture products currently in the research and development stage. Further, industry leader and former Corteva CTO, Neal Gutterson joined Trillium Ag’s Board of Directors in early 2023.
As CEO of Trillium Ag, Todd oversees and leads on all areas of the business including strategy, product innovation, technology and corporate partnerships. Todd is responsible for the businesses day-to-day operations including overseeing Trillium Ag’s Seattle-based research lab and implementing the company’s short- and long-term strategic plans.

Aerial Solutions for Modern Farming Challenges
Listen to the podcast here - https://www.northamericanag.com/north-american-ag-spotlight
In this week's North American Ag Spotlight Chrissy Wozniak hears the inspiring story of how Hylio was built. CEO Arthur Erickson breaks down the importance of aerial farming solutions and gives advice to those still hesitant to adopt hi-tech farming methods.
Hylio develops and offers innovative drone systems that automate precision agriculture treatments. Using Hylio’s technology, farmers/producers can now apply crop treatments directly to problem areas, allowing farmers to increase yields by addressing pests and deficiencies with more accuracy and efficacy.
In 2015, Arthur Erickson and two fellow students at the University of Texas at Austin, Nikhil Dixit, and Mike Oda, were in their dorm room working on aerospace engineering assignments and discussing the possibilities of using drones in agriculture. This was the beginning of Hylio.
While they were still in school, Arthur, Nikhil, and Mike began working on prototypes. Mike, who grew up on a ranch that Arthur often visited, provided insider knowledge on some of the logistics and challenges that farmers face when spraying crops. And the trio benefited from access to equipment in UT labs like prototyping machines, and the advice and feedback of professors, as they worked to get their fledgling business off the ground while finishing their degrees.
Once the first Hylio agrodrones were ready for flight, the team began offering spray services to farmers and ranchers, and quickly realized that more testing and work were needed to perfect the drones. Because regulations for drones are more stringent in the U.S., the team decided to travel to Central America to work with farmers there as they worked on perfecting the technology.
During the first year of operations in Central America, the team worked alongside farmers spending 10 hours or more in the fields, spraying thousands of acres, and working out bugs with the Hylio hardware and software. The farms in El Salvador, Honduras, Costa Rica, and Guatemala where they worked were ideal testing grounds for agricultural spray drones. Farmers in these regions grow on extremely steep and rocky land, making it impossible to spray using ground rigs. The only option before Hylio was to spray by hand, which was very labor intensive and exposed workers to chemicals, or by plane or helicopter, which was expensive.
Hylio is now one of the very few U.S. companies that are developing drone systems in-house and manufacturing them in the U.S. The Hylio team designs everything from the mechanical engineering components such as the power distribution system, the aerospace aspects – optimization of the flight envelope, propellers, and aerodynamics in general – and the software to control the drones. Because Hylio develops its own technologies from the ground up, it is uniquely positioned to sell a turn-key system to farmers and service operators that is optimized for effective and easy crop treatment.

Election Season is Upon Us, How Should We Prepare?
Listen to the podcast here - https://www.northamericanag.com/north-american-ag-spotlight - Election Season is Upon Us, How Should We Prepare?
In this week's North American Ag Spotlight Chrissy Wozniak discusses political strategy with Executive Director of the Institute for Sound Public Policy, Kevin Lynn. Kevin was raised on a small farm in Pennsylvania and is committed to the preservation of farmlands. But what’s most interesting is his response when asked where he stands politically, his typical response is he considers himself a lapsed Republican, an unrepentant Perotist, a failed Green, and frustrated Democrat. He is an astute observer of the hijinks being played not only on both sides of the political aisle but also with numerous NGO and activist groups across the US.
Today we discuss how he got to this place, and how he looks at the myriad of issues that agriculture and essentially – the nation – is facing. And also how to navigate the issues to prepare yourself for voting season which lays dead ahead.
The Institute for Sound Public Policy is an umbrella group that includes, among others, US Tech Workers, Doctors without Jobs, and Project for Immigration Reform. The Institute for Sound Public Policy is an organization with a reputation for fixing big problems through advocacy and activism. Not a think tank, rather partners with public and private nonprofit entities and community activists to formulate and implement sound policy at federal, state and local levels of government.
