Charles Hoskinson: Cardano, Crypto Toxicity, & Institutional COLLAPSE
Charles Hoskinson is best known as the creator of Cardano, a top 4 cryptocurrency that has been comfortably in the top 10 for a while now.
But before that, he was a co-founder of Ethereum, he was part of BitShares with Dan Larimer, and he was the creator of the Bitcoin Education Project.
Back in 2014, long before Ethereum had even launched, I first met and interviewed Charles, at a conference in Toronto. Now 7 years later, we reconnected in Mexico at the Satoshi Roundtable, and dived into everything that's happened since then. Cardano's meteoric rise, Ethereum's success, and the shift of Bitcoin culture.
Thanks for chatting with me, Charles!

What is a VIRTUAL credit/debit card? (2021)
Credit cards are a notoriously insecure means of payment and credit card fraud is one of the most common types of identity theft in the US. We give out our credit card number constantly without even thinking about it, and with it our name and home address.
Enter Virtual Credit Cards: they're like a VPN for your credit card. No more revealing private information to every stranger from whom you want to make a purchase. No more handing out the keys to the kingdom that allow anyone to draw money from your account.
Crypto is my preferred means of payment because you retain sovereignty over your money, you can have much better financial privacy, and you can save a bunch of money if you use services like Purse.io, Bitrefill, and Dash Direct.
BUT...
Some people are not yet ready to take the plunge completely into crypto. So if you enjoy the world of recurring payments and credit card purchases but are looking for a more private option, VIRTUAL credit cards may be for you!
In this video, Josh Summers from “All Things Secured” explains how virtual credit cards work and why they're great for giving back some privacy and control over your money.

NBTV community targeted by scammers, please be careful!
In this digital realm there are lots of scammers who will try to pick your digital pockets, so you need to learn to be street smart. Here are some BIG scams to watch out for, which I have either seen personally or have had close friends fall victim to.
As a general rule, never give out your private information, passwords or account numbers out to anyone who calls you unannounced - no matter who they claim to be!
In this video we’ll give you the best ways to know your enemy and protect yourself:
00:00 - Intro
00:56 - Giveaways
01:54 - Don't trust the "celebrities"
02:34 - Popular email phishing scams
03:11 - DON'T CLICK ON THE LINK
04:32 - Your phone number is PUBLIC
05:27 - SCAM: Appeals to authority
06:00 - The FAMILY TRAGEDY scam
06:42 - How well do you know that person you're chatting to online?
07:11 - Grooming
07:59 - 2FA
08:26 - Vaults
08:44 - Passwords (watch https://youtu.be/wPQrLkHLWJ4 for good password hygiene!)
I will NEVER contact you to offer advice, counseling, or free crypto and neither will any REAL person. Scammers can do LOTS of damage, so be vigilant and share this information with your family, especially those who may be older or less comfortable in the digital realm!

Zcash: Snowden's FAVORITE crypto?
More and more people are waking up to why financial privacy is so important, and just how invasive the traditional banking system is.
Many cryptocurrencies, even though they give you back control over your money, are actually pretty bad for privacy, and can expose your full transaction history and holdings to everyone.

Scrub your Metadata with THESE Tools
Did you know that when you share a photo online, you might be revealing the exact location of your home? Or that when you print a document, there are hidden dots on the page that reveal the exact printer the document came from?
Metadata is data about data. It's attached to EVERY digital artifact, and when you share a digital file, you're probably revealing a lot more information than intended.
How do you find this metadata and erase it? We'll teach you in this video.

The Most PRIVATE Search Engine (2021)
Search engines completely revolutionized how we access the web. If you want to find a website, you can type in keywords and search engines will show you a list of websites that match your criteria.
But your searches can reveal a lot of private information about you: your interests, location, medical conditions, political affiliation.
Google has 90% of the market share for searches, and they track everything you do. This gives them a deep, granular insight into who you are, and this is information that they sell.
Search engines are also an effective tool for controlling what information people have access to, and there are many studies that look at how search engines influence the behavior of users by filtering out some search results and prioritizing others.
Luckily there are many ways you can protect your privacy and take back control over your quests for information. Sometimes you sacrifice the quality of your search results by doing this, but other times you’d be surprised at how good alternative results are.
We look at the following privacy-focused browsers:
00:00 - What is a search engine?
5:00 - DuckDuckGo
6:56 - MetaGer
8:00 - SearX
9:15 - Qwant
10:17 - StartPage
11:57 - Mojeek
13:01 - YaCy
14:24 - Brave Search
Always assess your personal risk and threat-level when choosing a search engine, and remember that taking small steps to minimize your internet footprint can go a long way in protecting your privacy!

*Edit:
For those wondering if using a more private browser like Brave helps mitigate surveillance from using Google search. Here is a response from NBTV tech advisor Kieran Mesquita:
"Brave will block some fingerprinting measures and it does block a bunch of endpoints that google uses for telemetry collection but Google has multiple redundant ways to collect this information so the actual impact is pretty negligible when using Google search itself. Most of the telemetry blocking mitigates Google’s ability to track users on 3rd party sites (via adsense and google analytics) and not when using 1st party Google sites/tools."
Hope that helps!

How to Live ENTIRELY on Crypto (2022)
Now that you've gotten into crypto, what do you DO with your crypto?
Many people are building their savings in cryptocurrencies that can't be debased, in preparation for potential future economic upheaval.
But there are some who argue that this day of upheaval is already here:
- We have a financial system where you have to ask permission to use your own money, and payments can be blocked
- Where every time you swipe your card your purchases are tracked & monitored.
- Where any savings that you do leave in fiat in your bank account are losing value fast.
So for this reason, more and more people are choosing not to have any money in fiat at all. They convert all their savings to crypto, and then live entirely off that crypto.
As part of my beginner’s guide to using crypto everyday, I spent a day with Joël Valenzuela to find out how he lives 100% on crypto:
How does he buy groceries? Pay rent? Buy from major chains that don't accept crypto? Manage volatility?
His answers are really helpful for anyone ready to take the plunge!
00:00 - Why spend crypto everyday?
03:45 - Local businesses
04:31 - BitRefill

06:03 - DashDirect

08:14 - Paying Bills with Crypto
09:08 - Paying Rent with Crypto

Special THANK YOU to Joël Valenzuela and ALL of the wonderful Crypto friendly businesses of New Hampshire that welcomed me!

WHY Snowden Says Don’t Use WiFi: RESPONSE VIDEO (2021)
Snowden once tweeted:
"I wouldn't use WiFi at home, because global maps of every wireless access point's unique ID—including yours—are free and constantly updated. I would use ethernet; yes, ethernet on a phone."
A while ago I made a video that explained why you should never turn your phone into a hotspot, and why wifi is less secure than a wired ethernet connection. It was shocking to me how much data we're sending out via radio-waves without realizing.
The video went viral with over a MILLION views! And there have been so many FANTASTIC questions and comments that I felt it warranted a follow up response video. This new video also updates, clarifies and corrects some information that was not 100% explained the first time around.

Apple's MASS SURVEILLANCE tool for iPhones
Apple plans to modify iPhones to constantly scan for contraband.
I'm joined by Matthew Green, the renowned security expert and cryptography professor who first broke the story about Apple's new plan to roll our photo scanning on iPhones. We discuss the descent of Apple from being a bastion of privacy advocacy to descending into a dangerous realm of surveillance overreach.
As Ross Anderson, professor of security engineering, said,
“It is an absolutely appalling idea, because it is going to lead to distributed bulk surveillance of our phones and laptops.”

How to set up an ANONYMOUS iPhone & Apple Computer (2021)
Our lives and day-to-day activities have largely moved onto our digital devices. But this new digital landscape is filled with people trying to monitor these activities and figure out exactly what we’re doing on our devices.
What if we don’t want all of our online activity to be viewable by strangers?
I decided to see if it were possible to set up new apple devices that weren’t tied to my identity in any way – that were completely anonymous. And I found the more private I wanted to be... the less convenient it was.
Some quick tips:
Use cash
Beware of iCloud
Disable Siri
NEVER remember wifi networks!
I chose Apple products for this video because they're mainstream, and will go over some other private solutions in other videos.
One resource I highly recommend if you’re interested in extreme privacy is a fantastic book by Michael Bazzel called “Extreme Privacy: What It Takes to Disappear”

INFLATION IS HERE
Are we in for another bear cycle lasting years, or are we going to the moon? To figure that out, we have to look at what caused the recent run up.
Brian Brooks is the former Acting Comptroller of the Currency, and current CEO of Binance.US, so he has a particularly insightful perspective that bridges the worlds of traditional finance and crypto.
Renowned economist, George Selgin, is a Senior Fellow and Director of the Cato Institute's Center for Monetary and Financial Alternatives.
I chat to them both about what's going on with the US dollar money supply right now, and how that might affect your bitcoin holdings.

The MOST private email service (2021)
E-mail remains an essential backbone of internet communication, with over 4 billion users worldwide. But is it private? Actually it's inherently insecure. Furthermore, the vast majority of users rely on free online email services. Did you know that they use AI algorithms to scan your emails in order to learn more about you? Or that emails are stored in the clear, meaning in the event of a hack, all your emails would be leaked? Do you know what Metadata is and how much is collected by your email provider?
In this video, we go over what makes a good private email service and provide you with valuable suggestions for safer alternatives than the big names you are used to.
There is no one-size-fits-all answer for email, as it depends on your own threat model. But moving away from that old gmail or yahoo account is a GREAT place to start.

El Salvador and Bitcoin: Anti Freedom? With George Selgin
Bukele's Bitcoin legislation in El Salvador is certainly a win for Bitcoin. But is it a win for freedom?
George Selgin, Senior Fellow and Director of the Cato Institute's Center for Monetary and Financial Alternatives, dives into the legislation: the good and the bad.
The TLDR: The legislation is an awesome step, and can be considered a glass half full. But we shouldn't apologize for the areas where it lacks. The Bitcoin community should urge that articles 7 and 13 be repealed because at best they're unnecessary, but at worst they go against the ethos of freedom and choice, which is what Bitcoin is based on.

Amazon sidewalk... a surveillance network?
Amazon Sidewalk has launched! But how secure is it?
As of today, owners of Ring security cameras and Alexa devices are contributing a small portion of their internet bandwidth to create a network that makes it so devices stay connected further away from a home router and remain online when local Wi-Fi goes down.
Sounds great for home security, but what about privacy? It means Amazon can stay connected to you AT ALL TIMES. And everyone with an Amazon device is automatically opted-IN by default. Millions of people will now be co-opted into the program whether they know anything about it or not. It's also worth noting that fmr NSA director Keith Alexander now works on the board of Amazon.
As always, your privacy choices are your own preference, but you should ALWAYS be aware when people are collecting your data so that you can make informed decisions. But if you are privacy conscious, you might want to Opt out of Sidewalk!

Ryanair Flight ILLEGALLY Grounded to Catch Dissident… Déjà vu?
Outrage sparked after a Ryanair flight was forced to make an emergency landing in Belarus this week, so that authorities could arrested an opposition activist on board. The orders to arrest journalist, Roman Protasevich, came directly from Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko.
US and EU officials have condemned the actions calling it "outrageous and illegal behavior” and some are even calling it “unprecedented”.
The government’s attack on the media in Belarus is disgraceful. However, some of the very same figures who are now outraged at Belarus are conveniently forgetting their own actions just eight years ago when the US and EU conspired to ground a plane carrying the President of Bolivia in order to conduct a search for Edward Snowden.
I’d like their pro “freedom of the press” narrative more if it were actually sincere, but while Julian Assange is still behind bars, it’s hard to believe that the Biden administration and US pundits have suddenly embraced dissident journalists and information freedom.

The UNTOLD story of Bitcoin Pizza Day
The story of the $400,000,000 Pizza! (or $380,000,000 to be precise...)
Eleven years ago today, Laszlo Hanyecz made what would become one of the most famous food purchases of all time, and now today will forever be known as Bitcoin Pizza Day.
Hanyecz asked an online forum if anyone would be willing to send him 2 large pizzas in exchange for 10,000 Bitcoins.
Jeremy Sturdivant took the offer, and it was the first exchange of real world goods for Bitcoin in history.
Some say both men were ultimately fools for not holding onto those 10,000 Bitcoin.
Others recognize that this exchange grounded bitcoin’s price in terms of real world goods for the first time ever, and became a catalyst for greater adoption. We finally had a money that was uncensorable, peer-to-peer, permissionless, and you could actually use it in your every day life to buy things.
It was a revolution, covered in marinara sauce.
Happy Bitcoin Pizza Day, everyone!
And thank you Hanyecz and Sturdivant for helping ignite what quickly became a full fledged crypto revolution!

Is your phone spying on you?
Our whole lives are in our phones. We’re addicted to feeding them data about ourselves, and we take them with us everywhere we go. But Snowden says they’re tracking devices.
Snowden teamed up with hardware security expert Bunnie Huang to craft a device that could tell if your phone was sending off information about you without you knowing.
00:00 - Intro
02:27 – You think your phone is really in airplane mode? The results from their experiment may surprise you!
04:32 – Then Bunnie went even further and decided to build from scratch a device he could actually trust.
07:57 – Some tips to help give you back some privacy on your phone, without throwing the baby out with the bathwater

Check out the Precursor: (If you plan to buy PLEASE remember, this is not a phone!!! It's a precursor to a phone, it has no operating system or software, so only buy if you're developer and super techy or like to play around with gadgets! But it is indeed a cool gadget!)

The End of Centralized Exchanges: THORchain
Cryptocurrency holds the key to our decentralized and permissionless future. But one of the biggest problems in cryptocurrency is that all of these decentralized blockchains are like isolated islands. You have the bitcoin blockchain, the ethereum blockchain, the cardano blockchain. And to move from one island to another you have to rely on gatekeepers: centralized exchanges. They can deny you access, seize your funds, they can be shut down by governments or forced to delist certain coins.
There have been experiments with decentralized exchanges, but none of them have achieved the success of something like Uniswap -- a major breakthrough in dexes that allows you to exchange assets within the walled garden of Ethereum.
But now there’s Thorchain: It’s like a highway connecting these islands. A cross-chain Uniswap. It allows people to move assets from one chain to another freely, without KYC, without them losing control of their funds, without them having to get permission first.
Plus you can earn yield on your native assets.
I chat with Thorchain community member Chad Barraford about how Thorchain and the Rune token work.

Confused by Crypto Taxes? What you need to know.
Trigger warning: I have decided to make a video about crypto taxes (eep!)
First of all, this is not tax advice. These are things that I've learnt and I wanted to share them. (And it applies to US taxes only!)
Second, this is not an endorsement of taxes. Many will argue it’s ethical to pay taxes because they support public goods. But a significant portion of your taxes goes towards funding things like the military invasions and occupations, so I can't get behind an ethical justification of taxes.
Third, many people use taxes as an excuse for why they shouldn't use crypto everyday. Taxes are really not a show stopper, and I hope through this video to make them a little less daunting!
Fourth, there are some neat tricks regarding retirement accounts and donations that might be able to help you.
Huge thank you to Roger Brown for his help with this video. You can check out his company Lukka here: https://www.lukka.tech/
A great tool for institutions calculating their taxes!
