The documentary follows Florent, Christopher, and Mathias, a young French film crew that is sent to Los Angeles to make a documentary on the bodybuilding culture in Venice Beach. The fictional part tells the story of a film crew accidentally meeting an alien stranded on Earth. They give up their assignments to help said alien find a way back home. Think ET meets Bill and Ted’s excellent adventures, only the protagonists have a charming French accent. In this episode of Desperate Hours, we slip the surly bonds of earth to encounter disasters in the air. There have been accidents in the air ever since the time of the Wright brothers and all the improvements in aviation technology since then have lessened but by no means eliminated the dangers of flying. We hope, however, that you are not frantically canceling your next flight after watching this episode. The chance of getting into or anywhere near a plane crash is very low and air travel is considered one of the safest forms of transport. Many more people die in automobile accidents every year, admittedly with the difference that they don’t usually die hundreds at a time. With that sobering thought, we say farewell and fly safely.

On January 28, 1986 NASA lost seven astronauts when a booster engine failed, causing the Shuttle Challenger broke apart just 73 seconds after launch. But what exactly went wrong during the launch and in the preparations for the big day that led to such a catastrophic failure? Engineers at Morton Thiokol had warned managers not to launch as the “O” rings that sealed off the segments of the boosters might not expand as planned, but they were ignored. Worse still, this problem had been noticed from the very beginning of the Shuttle problem but was covered up to give NASA the commercial edge in sending satellites into space. Seven astronauts died and the Shuttle program was suspended.
