War Ship: Navy Vessel Heavy Maintenance | Mega Pit Stops| Free Documentary
The most modern warship in the Danish Navy - the HDMS Absalon needs a major overhaul. Every 5 years, the warship is docked and checked to the bones. This happens in Orskov Yard in Frederikshavn, North Denmark.
The flexible support ship is 137 meters long and equipped with high-precision weapon systems: From torpedoes to machine guns to anti-missile weapons. Thanks to its smooth and angled outer skin, the Absalon reflects only a fraction of radar radiation, making it extremely difficult to detect. The tracking systems of the warship itself, on the other hand, are highly sensitive. Space for two helicopters, two separate engines, bulletproof steel, and the most sophisticated technology – all of this is due to be inspected.
The most complex of all the processes is checking the marine shaft device. Which, in effect, means cutting a hole in the ship to remove the rudder and propellers. The bow thruster is removed and maintained, as well as the sonar – a top secret mission. And then there are the upgrades: The technicians install a brand new UV filter system for cleaning the ballast water; the painters give the entire ship a new look. All of this happens under extreme time pressure: the team has only 5 weeks.
But unexpected problems, as well as the special construction of the highly highly-equippen vessel push the engineers to their limits. In this MEGA PIT STOP.

The Arctic: Battlefield of a New Cold War? | Ice Race | Free Documentary
The Arctic was one of the most important battlefields during the Cold War. Could this happen again?
Has the Cold War returned?
The battle for resources will intensify military activities in the north and the chances of confrontations occurring will increase. Energy reserves elsewhere in the world are in the process of becoming depleted, but there are still huge quantities of petroleum around the North Pole. The potential for conflict over these resources has resulted in a substantial increase in military activities in the Arctic during the last few years. Will we succeed in resolving this forthcoming energy crisis without resorting to the use of military force?
The Arctic was an important military area during both the Second World War and the Cold War. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, NATO placed priority on other areas of the world, but military focus on the Arctic has now returned with full force. In the first episode of the documentary series ICE RACE we will see how, like Norway and NATO, the Russians are now building up their military striking power in the north.
Someone who is witness to military developments in the Arctic daily is Johan Hætta, a pilot with 333 Squadron. From their base on Andøya intelligence-gathering aircraft belonging to the Squadron fly to some of the most inhospitable areas in the Arctic. One of their main tasks is to obtain as much intelligence as possible about the increasing Russian military activities in the area.
- “It is important to keep an eye on what your neighbors are doing,” says Hætta.
The Russian response has been one of considerable suspicion about Western military activities in the Arctic. The reasons for their suspicions are largely historical ones because, during the Cold War, the opposing parties were willing to go to extremes in order to win. President Ronald Reagan's former Security Adviser, Thomas Reed, talks about how the CIA sabotaged a Soviet gas pipeline at the beginning of the 1980s.
Speaking today Reed says: “The explosion was so powerful that it could be seen from space.”
The documentary series “Ice Race” - “The War Game” shows that a global lack of oil and gas, food, and other resources is turning the Arctic into one of the most important and explosive areas in the world. How will this affect the world and what will the consequences be for the Arctic?

Oil and Gas in the Arctic | Ice Race | Free Documentary
Oil and gas are the very blood of our modern industrial society and our last major reserves are to be found in the Arctic.
The lives of practically everyone on earth would be different if we did not have oil and gas. Our reserves will soon become depleted, apart from in the Arctic. Our episode entitled “Entering Virgin Territory” explains the dramatic energy situation. How would this impact the vulnerable Arctic environment and the indigenous populations living in the area? Should Arctic considerations take precedence over the living standards of the rest of the world? The situation is most dramatic in the USA. This superpower will soon have no major oil wells left. The country is currently consuming three times as much oil as it produces and it is paying sky-high prices throughout the world to secure access to this black gold. The northernmost town in the USA, Barrow, lies in the middle of an area that is believed to contain Alaska’s richest oil reserves. The local Eskimo population lives mainly off the area’s natural land and sea resources, and an indomitable will to survive. They are now directing their energy towards the oil industry that wants to establish activities in the area.
As the Polar ice starts to melt the oil industry is dreaming about making major oil and gas finds in this more or less untouched territory. The violent conflicts and wars that are taking place in some of the world’s most affluent oil states are adding further fuel to these dreams. But who should be entitled to extract future oil and gas reserves in the Arctic? Where do the borders run in this icy territory? History has shown us that this is an extremely dangerous situation. Because will a world that is becoming increasingly more dependent on oil respect national borders, and historic territorial claims and be able to resolve border conflicts amicably? In our fourth and final programme, “Border Conflict”, we show how the new race in the Arctic is creating new borders and new conflicts.

Most Powerful Forces on Earth: Heatwaves | Fatal Forecast | Free Documentary
n the 21st century, Planet Earth has been heating up, significantly, year after year. When it comes to the hottest temperature ever recorded, 2019 broke records across the globe while 2020 shattered them. What was once a naturally occurring seasonal event is now being attributed to the increase of carbon emissions that is wearing away at the Earth’s fragile atmosphere.
Unless the current trends are reversed, humanity is on a collision course to make more regions of the world uninhabitable, where boiling temperatures could be the new normal. It’s all due to one of the deadliest weather events ever known: the Heat Wave.
One of the hardest heatwave events struck Europe in 2003 with a death toll of about 70 000. The heatwave was especially hard in France, silently taking lives, putting stress on the healthcare services, and causing city infrastructure as well as agriculture in the rural areas.

Vegas Casino Frontier Hotel | Building Demolition | BlowDown | Free Documentary
Las Vegas Casino Demolition: Blowdown is an explosive four-part building demolition series profiling some of the most challenging projects of Controlled Demolition Inc. of Phoenix, Maryland. Each of the structures, some notable, others notorious, is unique and presents the team with challenges ranging from the structural to the explosive and to the bureaucratic.
In this episode the team from CDI descends on Las Vegas to take
down the Frontier Hotel and Casino landmark using 5000 sticks of
dynamite.
A vintage Vegas structure, the Frontier was the second hotel to be
built on the strip and hosted notable performers like Elvis, the
Supremes and Seigfried and Roy. Recently purchased for 1.2 billion
dollars, the hotel is being imploded to make way for a reconstruction
of New York's Plaza Hotel. But unlike most demolitions, in most cities,
anything that happens in Vegas is part of a larger spectacle, so not
only is the demo team contending with taking down the building, but
in working around more than 1,600 kg of fireworks and pyrotechnics
which will be used in the pre-demo show.
Despite its diminutive stature, the team expects to use in excess of
1,000 kg of dynamite, more than the team used to bring down the 32
story Stardust hotel earlier in the year. The team is challenged by a
lack of accurate blueprints and the concentration of rebar that
threatens the operation.
As they drill the holes to load the dynamite massive amounts of re-bar are found, preventing proper placement of dynamite and to add
further complication, they come across toxic asbestos within the hotel walls. So with only days to go before the implosion, CDI rethinks the demo plan and attacks the structure by pre-weakening it. Heavy-duty drills and skid-steers equipped with jack-hammers cut the support walls.
They plan an innovative technique using cables to ensure that the
building will fall in the direction they want it to. The cables are
wrapped around an end of the structure and attached to the elevator shaft inside the hotel. The plan is to pull the wall away from the neighbouring roadway and into the fall zone.
The implosion is set for 2:30 am, and the fireworks technicians will
warm up the Vegas crowd for the grand finale turning the historical
Frontier into a pile of rubble.
