Woodturning - A Bit of Bark
Few months ago I turned a vase from Holm Oak, someone suggested they would like to see what a bowl would look like from it, so here it is (I do take a note of what people would like to see, so add your comment below!).
Wood was dried to less than 10% total moisture content before turning (end grain is sealed with wax). Finished in Danish Oil only with limited sanding. Gone for the more natural look with this one, you don't need to do much with Holm Oak to make it look nice!

Woodturning - The Off-Cut
Small project this week while I work on some other projects in the background. Inlay is abalone shell. Glue used is the Starbond Black CA Glue. Wood is apple sanded to 600, then finished with sanding sealer followed by abrasive paste.

Woodturning - Hobbly Bobbly Log
This weeks project was more of a test piece for future projects using some new colours of inlay powder I've been sent. Not too sure myself with the end result, but nobody can moan I used blue again...
Wood is a apple, one side is riddled with small burls. Dried in the oven for 3 hours to get the MC right down as I was originally going to use epoxy resin, went for the faster cheaper option in the end.

Woodturning - The Eternal Flame
Wanted to turn a grass tree root for some time, base is made from a piece of Eucalyptus wood I was given some years ago. Inlay is 1mm copper cable.
Eucalyptus faults and cracks are filled with the Starbond Black CA glue, larger cracks are filled with ground coffee and CA glue before topping with the Black CA Glue.
Slight error on my part leaving the date and time stamp option turned on with the one of the cameras..

Woodturning - I made it with a Grape Vine
Was going to be called another log to bowl but, I had some left over grape vine cuttings that can be seen in the back ground at the start of the video, hence the title.
Filler used is Starbond Thin CA glue and some glittery stuff I picked up from a local craft store, the main filler is Ground Coffee and some more glittery stuff. The pieces are glued into place using the medium CA glue. The spray is the accelerator for the glue. If you are using this technique please ensure the glue is fully dry before turning and wear decent eye protection or a face shield, having CA glue fly out at you will not be pleasant especially if it lands in your eye.
Wood is apple, log was cut green, ends sealed and placed in the drier for a few weeks before turning, Total MC was less 10%. Grape vine pieces were left to air dry for a couple of months before being put in a hot oven at 150c for 2 hours to fully dry out.

Woodturning - It was supposed to be a vase!
So this week was supposed to be a small vase, I knew there was a couple of cracks in the end that appeared from drying but didn't know there was a historical crack that ran all the way through the wood. So there was a change in plan as the crack was exactly where I didn't want it..
Filler used was Blue Mica Dust (same sort used in cosmetics) and used ground coffee. Wood is Apple.

Woodturning - The Lost Limb
Piece of oak from a recent crown lift, at some point a long time ago this would have been a new bough growing and was snapped off. I knew it would be off balance but it wasn't until I started to hollow it out I could see most of the inside had rotten away, which would explain why it was so off balance.
It had been in the drier for a few weeks and had stopped loosing weight, but the inside was still like a sponge and extremely difficult to get a decent cut on, so the inside was drilled to give an edge to cut from.
Sanded to 800 and finished with Danish Oil only, didn't think a high gloss finish would do it any justice

Woodturning - Reclaimed Oak HMS Victory
I was recently lucky enough to get hold of some reclaimed oak from the HMS Victory restoration. There's a bit of it floating around at the moment (no pun intended), but that's not going to last long so I've bought what I can to turn.
Each of these will be available for sale later on in the year closer to Christmas time and will come with a full certificate of provenance and fully traceable of its origin.

Woodturning - Scrumpy and Coffee
Nice interesting piece of wood taken from a Scrumpy Apple tree, bit cracked, bit Burly, bit of everything really. Cracks ground out and filled with used ground coffee beans (makes a change from resin!)
For those interested the log had already been part dried for about 3 weeks in my low temperature drying kiln, final drying was done in the microwave at intervals of 1 min on full power and left to cool in the workshop between cycles, final drying only took about a day, and then it was left in the house for a week to meet its equilibrium moisture content before continuing, although the wood still warped slightly, hence truing the base and sides up again.
Used Coffee is just normal ground beans, dried in an oven after use. Glue is just cheap superglue, I have found this to be the best for most jobs when filling cracks etc as its very thin, and normally buy it in bulk..

Woodturing - English Holm oak
Nice piece of Holm oak turned. As Holm oak is not that popular (apart from firewood) I thought it would be nice to show how well the grain pattern looks, this is from a younger tree, the older the tree gets the darker the wood. Enjoy and please let me know of anything else you would like to see made!

Woodturning - Coloured Pencil Mosaic
Ying Yang Plate made from coloured pencils.
This is the first Coloured pencil project I have done, I started this a couple of months back now, apologies for the music all the way through, most of this was filmed some time ago before I got my audio sorted on my camera.
Few lessons learned from this project for those interested in turning one. The black pencils contain a high amount of carbon (graphite), these dull HSS tools fast, and I mean I spent more time at the grinder than actually turning on the outer edge of the plate. I should have used my carbide tools and just accepted the cost or used another colour, although the darker colours all seem to have some carbon content so its still carbide tools next time.
Always use a pressure pot or at least stabilize the pencils first if you can, they just release air into the resin without a pressure pot. I made the mistake of thinking it would be ok based on the shallow size of the pour. The other option would be to use a slow cure resin and vacuum chamber to remove the air, a slow cure resin would also be better at getting into the smaller places while allowing any air to be released.
When turning you will see I had to apply superglue to the plate to keep some of the lead in each pencil in place, when the plate gets thin it just gets pushed out the other side as opposed to being cut with the wood, if you stabilized the pencils this may not happen which is something I will have to experiment with.
Sanding can be difficult with colour run, I found it best to use an extremely light pressure when sanding and gradually work you way through the grits. Finishing is just do with sanding sealer, everything else I experimented with seemed to have a negative effect with colour run, however that may just be the make of pencils I used.
I think the effect of the mosaic may have come out better with pencils that have a larger lead radius in comparison to the wood....Its also an extremely time consuming project :)
Let me know your thoughts in the comments. Thanks

Woodturning - Burly Oak Log
One of the last pieces of this oak I have, this ones covered in burls from one end to the other, slightly over seasoned but that just adds to effect, method below.
Oak treated first to stabilize the wood, this is done using a heat curing resin (Cactus Juice) under vacuum to remove the air, then left overnight to allow the resin to soak in once the vacuum is released, after this its placed in an oven at 92 C for 3 hours to cure. This time I added some colour to the resin to see what effect I could get within the wood, might need a bit more experimenting in this area.
Next the wood was placed in a mould and normal epoxy resin poured in to bond the two pieces together.
The rest is just wood turning with a bit of electricity :)
