Woodturning - The Scarab and the Snake
This one's been in the making for a while now, initially it was a smaller project that just seemed to grow with ideas as it went.
The stick is made from Black Palmwood, the handle or snake is made from American Walnut, the Scarab is sourced from a sustainable seller and cast in clear resin.
All the metal parts are made from Pewter.

Woodturning - The Speaker
This weeks project, (which was supposed to be last weeks project but never got finished in time) is a Speaker made from Oak, the piece was removed from a much larger piece of oak as I thought it might make an interesting project.
The wood has been drying in the work shop for the last several months, however it still wasn't dry enough to finish without a little help from the oven.
The speaker used is made by TangBand, the T2-2136SA speaker was selected as its a totally self contained unit featuring its own passive radiator, meaning no calculations for me! Which allows the freedom to create whatever shape you want and only have to consider the mounting hole size.
The speaker is finished with Danish Oil coated several times over a week and left to dry for 24 hours between each coat.

Woodturning - A Coffee Mug
This has to be my most requested project both on and off YT, so here it is...a coffee mug, with a handle.
The mug is made from a small apple log with plenty of burl, the handle is also made from burl but with a Pewter centre piece.
The mug is finished with Pure Tung oil, this oil is food safe and provides a very good water proof coating, the only downside is the time taken to apply in at least 5 coats and then around 4 weeks to fully cure, however once done it provides a very durable water proof coating that can sustain hot drinks etc and hand washing.

Woodturning - Hawthorn Root Lamp
This weeks project is something I have been working on for a while, the wood has taken longer than expected to dry out allowing the resin pour. The root was saved last year following the removal of a hedge.
The amount of resin used in the project was approximately 4kg. Although not shown in the video, the root was rough turned then placed in an over for several hours to speed up the drying, even then it still took a further 4 weeks to dry out and reach a state of equilibrium.
The initial rough turn was a little more shaky on the lathe than I would have liked and not something I would recommend doing for any extended period, however it was only a few minutes before it was balanced up enough to turn the speed up a little. Unfortunately the minimum speed on the lathe is only 500rpm, which is a little too fast for out of balance rough turning of things this size.
Hope you enjoy the final piece!

Woodturning - A Red Delicious Log
This weeks project is something I started a couple of months ago, the wood was taken from a Red Delicious Apple tree. The epoxy mix was a bit of an experiment which I thought turned out pretty good. The mix was two colours of carbon silver and a bronze / copper.
After the initial rough cut the wood was returned to the drier to loose the last of its moisture ready for casting.
Large amount of Burl within this piece which makes it extra nice.
This will be available on my website soon - mjturning.com

Woodturning - 8 Coffee Mugs
These have quickly become my most popular item requested, they all start out as wood felled from trees during normal maintenance work, the process then starts of drying, rough turning, further drying and then finishing. These 8 were started a couple of months ago.

Woodturning - Cucumber Tree Burl
Large burl from some maintenance work to a Cucumber Tree, hollowed out. Infill is a mixture of used ground coffee and CA.
Burl was part dried in my low temperature kiln, then rough turned, hollowed out to an approximate 1" thickness. It was then fully dried over a period 8 weeks in the kiln again before finishing the hollowing out. The burl is finished in Danish Oil.
This will be available on my website from tomorrow.

Woodturning - UV Glow Lamp
I've been asked a few times to make a lamp with a light inside, while I like the idea there is still an issue with dissipating heat (I'm still working on that), so I came up with this idea, I ordered a bag of phosphorus glow powder (which took a lot longer to get through customs than I expected) to put into the epoxy resin.
The idea is the UV lights are inside the hollowed out lamp, you only have to turn the power on for a couple of minutes to re-charge the lamp, it then lasts for a few hours with a nice glow.
I should have really made a purpose built mould to cast the whole lamp at once, there was a small amount of settlement within the powder while the resin cured that's left a slight line around the lamp.
The powder also dulls normal tools within minutes if you are trying this, it acts as an abrasive as you turn. You have to use Carbide ;)...

Woodturning - Logs to 2.1 Speaker System
This project was started in September this year and I've been trying to finish it off for some time now. The design originally was to use 3 similar pieces of wood so they all matched as one, then I decided I wanted the piece to follow its name of a 2.1 speaker system, so I changed the wood I was going to use for the sub woofer.
The sub woofer is made from Holm oak, the top two speakers are made from apple wood.

Woodturning - Log to Coffee Mug
I've been working in the back ground on a much larger project, as I haven't posted for a couple of weeks I thought I would post a quick project today. I've kept away from the blue / turquoise resin in this one and gone with a copper filler, so should please some people!
Large project out next Friday so look out for that one!

Woodturning - Titanic and HMS Victory Hull Pieces
Bit of history behind each piece. The fragment of hull piece from the R.M.S Titanic belonged to the former Vice President of the RMS Titanic inc who dived to the wreck 22 times. In 1996 an attempt was made to bring up a section of the hull, but this failed when the cables snapped. Two years later the same section of hull was fully recovered. The fragment in this video which is set in resin, came from the restoration before the section of hull was put on display at the Luxor Hotel Exhibition in Las Vegas.
The piece of oak from the HMS Victory is also from a recent renovation of the Victory where damaged sections of the hull was removed, and the reclaimed oak was sold off.
This pen and many more will be available soon on my website mjturning.com. Each piece comes with its own certificate of provenance.

Woodturning - The Poisoned Chalice
Well it is Halloween! Wood is apple. Inlay wood is from a grapevine. Slight error on my part when casting the grapevine into the Chalice, I forgot to stabilize the grapevine, so it created a few pockets of small bubbles, those was drilled back out and filled with embossing powder.

Woodturning - Two 4 One
This weeks project is to show what can be done with what most people would consider a piece only fit for the fire.
This was a small off cut from one of the previous projects. Small amounts of Burl in the wood. The idea of the dye was to leave some small areas of blue, the camera does not pick them up that well but they are there enough for me.

Woodturning - A bit of Blue
This weeks project was is more of an experiment of colour than anything else, I've been after a vibrant blue wood stain wood for some time, so I dragged out a bit of fire wood to see how it would turn out, think I've found it but you can give me your thoughts in the comments.
I lost some footage filling the cracks in the wood, but nothing else! Filler was red Mica Powder with CA glue, the black is Starbond black CA.

Woodturning - Rotten to the Core
This weeks project was not supposed to turn out like this, I knew there was a bit of rot in the wood, but not to the extent it ran all the way through to the centre. After a bit I gave in and just worked with what was there, picked and ground out the real soft stuff and stabilized the remaining with CA glue. Certainly never had time this week to break out the resin so its finished as nature left it.
Sanded to 400 and finished with Danish oil. Wood is Apple.

Woodturning - Camel Thorn Firewood (Kameeldoring)
Bought a bag of Camel Thorn Firewood (Kameeldoring) for the garden burner, some of it looked too nice to burn, here you have the end result.
Probably one of the harder woods to turn, dulls HSS tools in minutes (and that wasn't a cheap tool either). Moisture content of the wood is only around 1%, apparently its left to dry in the African sun.
