Should I just go on medication? Is medication wrong for a Christian? I feel like I am struggling with my mental health, is medication going to help cure me? These are common questions that arise when people find their mood, their thought-life and emotions out of control or challenging to manage. In a world where there are so many opinions and perspectives, how can we make decisions about medication and mental health in a way that is fruitful and grounded for our journey? As Christians, I believe that God has a way for us to experience healing and freedom in mental health: which involves healing how we think, how we process emotions and how we connect in relationships. Along the way, the subject of medication comes up as a possible way to help. I want to address this subject in a way that is compassionate, gracious, but also illuminating and helpful. It is my deep convictions that we need to be discerning, not in fear, not in spiraling, but in sobriety, to understand the helpful paths for our journey. And this includes mental health and medication. Keep in mind that what I am sharing is to add value to your journey. It's not meant to replace any professional help you are getting. To understand the power of grace, you'll need to understand how it contrasts with performance and perfectionism. Most would say this is really about grace vs law, which is true. But we don't often see how law impacts us today. When most believers think of LAW, they often think of sacrifices, OT ceremonies and an intense list of thou shall nots. BUt they don't see the modern version of law that shows up in performance based Christianity and Christian perfectionism. These two driving forces heavily influenced my life and were the main forces in how I actually related to God on a daily basis. It deceives believers and strips them of living in freedom. It hinders and erodes mental health. The law in its modern form is performance and perfectionism. It creates a mentality that produces dead results, but keeps us locked into the cycle. In our brokenness and shame, condemnation comes in and tell us we need to fix things through performing and fixing a list of disturbances we see in our lives. Meanwhile, this pattern of living blocks our vision of God’s love for us and His grace towards us. There are many who need this message: stop trying to fix people and let go of being the fixer. It’s hindering your journey, it is not improving your relationships, it's wearing you out. Its fueling resentment, stress, weariness. And to top it off, it's actually not letting God simply do the work He needs to do. Many times Christians can say things and they don’t even know what they mean when they say it. In addition, we often say things that become cliches and lose the deeper meaning. Furthermore, we can often say things that can be super spiritual covers for underlying fears and distortions. One common one that I want to bring up today is the statement, “I am just waiting on the Lord.” Are you really waiting on God or are you actually living in procrastination, which is driven by fear, specifically the fear of failure, which is keeping you in a state of chronic passivity. I like to address common statements that Christians say that often become cliche, but also don’t have depth of meaning and understanding. They become blanket statements that are overused without much thought. We often do not even know what they mean. One of them is, "You are doing this in your own strength, not God's strength." But what does this even mean? Many times when I ask people what they mean, they don't really know. The statement, “You have been doing this in your own strength. You need to do it in God’s strength,” is a common prescription given to believers as a reason for why they are struggling, stuck or battling. As you look at your mental and emotional health journey, you will come across many terms that are often used to diagnose someone. As culture becomes more aware of mental health struggles and the psychological terms with diagnostics that come along with it, many wonder, “Do I have that mental health struggle? Do I need a diagnosis?” Many can wonder what is wrong with them. So in great disturbance and panic, they can rush to see if they maybe have a diagnosis. What is the role of our conscience from a biblical standpoint and how can we learn to relate to our conscience in a healthy and fruitful way? How does it impact mental health, especially those who struggle with toxic guilt, shame and obsessive compulsive struggles? In order to address this, I need to bring out what the conscience actually is and bring biblical application to how it is used. A common question that arises with Christians and obsessive compulsive struggles is they often ask, "Is this a demon? Is this an evil spirit?" The insights I am sharing have saved my mental health, which has to do with discerning self-pity in my life. This monster wil seek to interfere in your ability to step out of imprisoning mindsets and behaviors. It will interfere in your ability to walk in greater mental health. Self-pity is a deceptive counterfeit to love, but it is not love. It appears as a form of self-comfort, but it does not bring empowering comfort. It is actually based on loathing, to the point that it keeps you stuck in disempowered and unhealthy patterns. It may deceive you to think you are looking at yourself with love, but it steals your awareness of empowerment. Self-pity shows up the most whenever you are at a stretching point, you reach a current place of limitation or you are confronted with a need to make a change. Self-pity convinces you that change cannot happen and will look for evidence and other people to validate this perception. Self-Pity shows up on your worst days to prevent you from taking steps forward. Self pity cannot be called out or even cast out by someone else. You will have to see it and confront it within yourself. If someone does try to confront it in you, your initial reaction will be to get angry with them.Truth is, we don’t make progress when self-pity is not removed. Mental health is grealy empowered by living single minded. It promotes steadiness, consistency and stability. But many of us find ourselves struggling with living single minded from day to day. Our minds get pulled into so many thoughts, perspectives and directions that leads us away from a single minded lifestyle. Instead we find ourselves in world of double mindedness, which drives us into mental and emotional stability. Many admit they walk in double, triple and quadriple mindedness, as they are under the influence of so many thoughts and directions, it leaves them paralized and unable to take steps forward. Identity is developed and strengthened under the love, influence and validation that comes from Father God. Our journey of healing and freedom involves learning to experience the love of the Father. In The OCD Healing Journey, I write and teach about the importance of life transitions, seasons in our life where we need nurture and emotional equipping to help launch us into the next phase of life. But for many, they realize their seasons of transition were filled with neglect and even trauma. Today I want to bring out an important transition in the life of Jesus that we can learn so much from. When our Savior approached John the Baptist to be baptized, a critical transition was taking place. This moment was not only going to usher in the beginning of His earthly ministry, it would also place a powerful stamp on the heart of our Savior that each of us need to experience in our hearts as well.
