Two Limited Edition Experimental Livery Hornby Models - are they worth getting?
In this video we take a look at Hornby catalogue numbers R140 and R2023. These locomotives are named "Tranquil" and "St. Frusquin".
Both these models are limited edition Class A3 4-6-2 steam locomotives from Hornby. They were made in England, and feature an experimental livery on both engines.
In this video we look at both in detail, and then give them a test run.
I'll also make a recommendation if you should consider buying these locomotives or not.

The Great Western Railway (GWR) is a historic railway company in the United Kingdom. It was established in 1833 and played a significant role in the development of the railway network in Britain. The GWR initially operated primarily in western and southwestern England, connecting London with cities such as Bristol, Exeter, and Plymouth.
Isambard Kingdom Brunel, a prominent engineer of the time, was instrumental in the design and construction of the Great Western Railway. Brunel's vision was to create a railway with a broad gauge of 7 feet and a unique design that incorporated many impressive engineering feats. Notable among these was the Maidenhead Railway Bridge, which spanned the River Thames, and the Box Tunnel, which was the longest railway tunnel in Britain at the time.
The GWR became known for its luxurious passenger services, which included famous express trains such as the "Flying Dutchman" and the "Cornish Riviera Express." The company also introduced innovations such as dining cars and observation saloons, providing passengers with a comfortable and enjoyable travel experience.
In addition to passenger services, the GWR played a crucial role in freight transportation, particularly in the coal and iron industries. The railway connected various industrial regions, enabling the efficient movement of goods across the country.
During World War II, the GWR played a vital role in transporting troops, equipment, and supplies for the war effort. The railway network faced significant challenges during this time, including bombings and damage to infrastructure. However, it played a crucial role in supporting the war and was instrumental in the successful D-Day invasion in 1944.
In the years following the war, the British railway system underwent significant changes, including the nationalization of the industry in 1948. The GWR became part of the nationalized British Railways, and many changes were made to the network, including the standardization of track gauge to the narrower 4 feet 8.5 inches used in most of the country.
Despite these changes, the GWR name continued to be used, and in recent years, the brand has been revived by the current railway operator in the region. Today, Great Western Railway (GWR) operates train services in the southwestern and western parts of England, including routes to London Paddington, Bristol, Cardiff, and Exeter. The company strives to maintain the legacy of the historic Great Western Railway by providing modern and efficient train services while also celebrating its rich heritage.

ScotRail HST Class 43 diesel locomotive is a type of high-speed train used in Scotland by ScotRail. HST stands for "High-Speed Train," and Class 43 refers to the specific class of diesel locomotives used in this train set. It's worth noting that there may have been further developments or changes to the ScotRail fleet after my last update, so I recommend checking more recent sources for the latest information.
Here are some key features and characteristics of the ScotRail HST Class 43:
Origin: The Class 43 HST is a diesel-powered high-speed train that was originally built in the 1970s by British Rail Engineering Limited (BREL).
Design: The HST has a distinctive aerodynamic design with a power car at each end and several intermediate passenger carriages.
Speed: The HST is capable of reaching high speeds and was designed to operate on mainline routes, making it suitable for long-distance travel.
Diesel Power: Unlike electric trains that draw power from overhead lines, the HST Class 43 is powered by diesel engines located in the power cars.
Intercity Service: The HST Class 43 has a long history of serving intercity routes, connecting major cities and towns across various regions.
ScotRail Service: ScotRail, the national train operating company of Scotland, has operated HST Class 43 trains to provide services on certain routes within Scotland. These trains are used for connecting cities like Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen, Inverness, and others.
Refurbishments: Over the years, some HST sets have undergone refurbishments and upgrades to improve passenger comfort, modernize interiors, and enhance overall performance.
Replacement: As of my last update, there were plans to replace the HST Class 43 trains in Scotland with newer rolling stock to further improve service and efficiency.

The Compound 4-4-0 locomotive, operated by the London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS), was specifically created for passenger transportation. The LMS constructed a total of 195 engines for this class, in addition to the 45 Midland Railway 1000 Class locomotives, which were nearly identical. One notable distinction was the smaller driving wheel diameter on the LMS version compared to the Midland Railway variant. These locomotives were taken out of service between 1952 and 1961. Sadly, none of them have been preserved, although the first of the Midland 1000 Class engines has survived.

The LNER Azuma train is a high-speed electric multiple unit (EMU) train operated by London North Eastern Railway (LNER) in the United Kingdom. "Azuma" means "East" in Japanese, reflecting its connection to the Japanese Shinkansen technology that inspired its design. It entered service on the East Coast Main Line in May 2019.
The Azuma train is manufactured by Hitachi Rail and is based on the Class 800/801 series trains used by several other UK train operators. It is known for its sleek and modern design, improved acceleration, and enhanced passenger experience. The train's aerodynamic exterior reduces noise and provides a smoother journey.
One of the key features of the Azuma train is its bi-mode capability, allowing it to operate on both electrified and non-electrified lines. This flexibility is particularly useful on the East Coast Main Line, which includes sections without overhead electrification. On electrified sections, the train runs on electricity, minimizing emissions and reducing environmental impact.
The Azuma trains come in two variants: the Class 800 and the Class 801. The Class 800 is a bi-mode train, while the Class 801 is an electric-only version. The trains offer improved acceleration and top speeds, reducing journey times on the East Coast Main Line. The interior of the Azuma trains is designed with passenger comfort in mind, featuring spacious seating, power sockets, and onboard Wi-Fi.
The introduction of the Azuma trains has brought several benefits to LNER passengers, including increased capacity, reduced journey times, and improved reliability. The trains have helped to modernize the rail network on the East Coast Main Line and enhance the overall travel experience for passengers.

The Class 25 locomotives, an expansion of the earlier Class 24 design utilising Sulzer power plants, featured minor visual differences along with modest increases in speed and horsepower. These locomotives were primarily employed on the Midland and Scottish Regions of British Railways, and also served on the Western Region temporarily after the Class 35 Hymek locomotives were retired in 1972.
The Class 25 diesel-electric locomotives were designed for versatile use, operating on both passenger and freight lines. Initially, they were assigned to the Eastern Region before being transferred to the LMR (London Midland Region) in favour of the larger Brush Type 2 (Class 30/31) locomotives built by Brush. A total of 327 Class 25 locomotives were constructed across various workshops, including Derby, Crewe, and Darlington.
The Class 25 locomotives began their service in May 1963 and the last one entered operation in July 1966. Although built as Type 2 locomotives and later reclassified as Class 25 under TOPS, they did not gain significant prominence in the British Railways fleet.
These locomotives were commonly assigned to inter-regional passenger trains, parcels traffic, and freight services. Due to their light weight, freight operations often required double-heading or the use of brake tenders. The design allowed for a top speed of 90 MPH. While there were a few issues with the class, such as sheet metal corrosion, overall they performed well.
In the early years, the liveries of the Class 25 locomotives varied significantly. Some were initially painted entirely in Brunswick green with grey roofs, while later examples had light green stripes on the lower body side. Subsequent units received a two-tone green livery. All locomotives were required to have small yellow warning panels at both cab ends after 1964. Toward the end of production in late 1966, locomotives entered service in the new Corporate blue livery with full yellow ends, which became the standard for the class.
By the late 1970s, much of the work originally intended for the Class 25 locomotives had vanished from the contemporary railway landscape. The demand for mixed traffic engines had diminished, leading to the complete withdrawal of the class in March 1987. However, 20 members of the class were preserved in various operational conditions, proving valuable to their operators due to their light weight and compact size.

ABOUT THE BB7200 CLASS OF ELECTRIC LOCOMOTIVE
The SNCF Class BB 7200, an electric locomotive operated by the SNCF in France, is a variant designed for 1.5 kV DC power. It belongs to the 'Nez Cassé' locomotive family, which was constructed by Alstom between 1976 and 1985. These locomotives have a continuous power rating of 4,040 kW (5,420 hp). In France, the AC version is known as the SNCF Class BB 15000, and the dual-voltage version is called the SNCF Class BB 22200. The NS Class 1600 in the Netherlands is a DC locomotive based on the BB 7200.
Originally intended for passenger service, the BB 7200 locomotives are increasingly being assigned for freight operations, equipped with lower-geared bogies as passenger services transition to locomotive-hauled coaches by TGV services. These locomotives are restricted to operating on the French 1.5 kV DC electrified network, primarily in southeastern France from Paris and further south. As of 2016, 48 BB 7200 locomotives were allocated for freight service, 58 for intercity passenger service, 50 for regional passenger service, and two for auto-train service.
ABOUT THE BB26000 CLASS OF ELECTRIC LOCOMOTIVE
The SNCF BB 26000 locomotives, manufactured by GEC Alsthom between 1988 and 1998 for SNCF, belong to a class of dual-voltage electric locomotives with four axles and a B'B' configuration. They are capable of reaching a top speed of 200 km/h. These locomotives are commonly referred to as the Sybics.
The design and development of the BB 26000 locomotives aimed to fulfill both freight and passenger roles. They were designed to be able to haul 16 Corail coaches at a speed of 200 km/h on a 0.25% gradient, as well as a 2,050-ton freight train at 80 km/h on a 0.88% gradient.
The locomotives feature a two-cabin design with a steel body and are equipped with two pantographs, one for 1500 V operation and the other for 25 kV operation. The 25 kV AC supply is converted to 1500 V through rectification, and the power electronics are directly fed by a 1500 V supply. The locomotives utilize a thyristor bridge-based three-phase inverter circuit, with the three elements of the circuit connected in parallel. The power supplies per motor are series connected. At speeds below 15 km/h, a voltage-reducing chopper circuit is used for each motor bogie to assist with control. The power electronics of the two motor bogies are connected in parallel and cooled by evaporative cooling using boiling Freon 113.
The locomotives employ monomotor bogies with a primarily helical spring suspension system. The traction motors are three-phase synchronous type, similar to those used in the contemporary TGV Atlantique, but with two three-phase stator windings offset by 30 degrees. The power from the traction motors is transmitted to the wheels through a floating ring vibration isolation element and a hollow shaft drive.
The choice of monomotor bogies was based on the successful performance of previous locomotive classes such as the SNCF BB 22200, SNCF BB 15000, and SNCF BB 7200. The decision to use synchronous motors was driven by factors such as reduced mass, equipment simplicity, and cost-effectiveness. Two locomotives, SNCF BB 20011 and 20012, were specifically used for developing and testing the dual-voltage traction system, microprocessor control systems, auxiliary motors, and braking systems. The industrial design group MBD Design, based in Paris, contributed to the locomotive's design.
SNCF ordered a total of 264 locomotives of this class, but only 234 were eventually built. The last 30 locomotives of the order were constructed as a new triple-voltage design capable of operating on 3 kV DC as well. These locomotives utilized asynchronous electric motors and became known as the SNCF Class BB 36000 (Asytrit).
The BB 26000 locomotives have been deployed in various regions throughout France.
