WATCH THIS if Life is OVERWHELMING You (Adapting to a Change of Plans) | JHS Ep. 733
Maya Shankar is a cognitive scientist who once aspired to become a career violinist, and is the creator, executive producer, and host of the podcast A Slight Change of Plans.
Subscribe to the podcast: http://jordanharbinger.com/subscribe
Full show notes can be found here: https://jordanharbinger.com/733
What We Discuss with Maya:
0:00 - Intro (how much Maya loved violin)
20:00 - The injury that ruined Maya's career
31:45 - How to process a life-changing event
44:41 - How to pick the people that support you
56:09 - Be aware of your decision making when you're emotional
1:04:19 - Be careful how you label yourself
When change is forced upon us by life’s incalculable circumstances, our sudden loss of control over what seemed like a certainty can feel like a personal failure. We may have spent years of our lives planning for something that’s been cruelly booted out of reach — to the point that our very identities become untethered. So what can we do to reclaim a sense of purpose instead of spending the rest of our days mulling over what might have been?
On this episode, we’re joined by Maya Shankar, a cognitive scientist and host of the podcast A Slight Change of Plans about what she did when a fluke accident nixed her plans to become a career violinist — a dream she’d been pursuing since she was nine years old. Here, we discuss Maya’s unorthodox path to becoming a student of the famed Itzhak Perlman at Juilliard School of Music, the throughline of human connection that allowed her to pivot from violinist to academic to Chair of the White House Behavioral Science Team to podcasting, and her advice for those of us who need to adapt when life throws us a “slight change of plans.” Listen, learn, and enjoy!

China’s Profitable Business of "Re-education Camps" | Uyghur Human Rights Attorney Speaks OUT | JHS
Nury Turkel is a human rights attorney for the US Commission on International Religious Freedom and the author of No Escape: The True Story of China’s Genocide of the Uyghurs.
Subscribe to the podcast: http://jordanharbinger.com/subscribe
Full show notes can be found here: https://jordanharbinger.com/730
What We Discuss with Nury:
0:00 - Intro
0:06 - Using AI to arrest Uyghurs
20:49 - Americans supporting forced labor
37:03 - Xinjang is a mix of America and North Korea
59:58 - Uyghurs can't contact their families inside Xinjang
1:18:14 - The fight against 3 forces
1:38:26 - How can YOU (the listeners) help?
The Uyghurs are Turkic Muslims who have inhabited the Xinjiang area of present-day China since at least the third century AD. When the Chinese Communist Party transformed it into an autonomous region in 1955 and encouraged ethnic Chinese Han to settle here (where natural gas, coal, and other fossil resources account for more than 20 percent of China’s energy reserves), it was only a matter of time before these two groups would clash — giving the government a convenient excuse to punish the entirety of the Uyghur population for the terrorist actions of a separatist extremist minority. And when a totalitarian regime wants complete control over such a valuable parcel of land, then colonization, slavery, and genocide against the “undesirable” Uyghurs are just chapters in an elaborate, tragic playbook we’re seeing in action right now.
On this episode, we’re joined by Xinjiang native Nury Turkel, a human rights attorney for the US Commission on International Religious Freedom and the author of No Escape: The True Story of China’s Genocide of the Uyghurs. Here, we discuss how millions of Uyghurs are being systematically oppressed, kidnapped, enslaved, and “re-educated” in concentration camps by a malevolent government armed with the latest technology and a budget that helps them pay off unscrupulous western influencers to deny that any of it is happening. Listen and learn!

Politics are Ruining Science | Neil deGrasse Tyson | JHS Ep. 727
Neil deGrasse Tyson is the Frederick P. Rose Director of the Hayden Planetarium, host of StarTalk Radio, and author. He is kind enough to rejoin us and discuss his latest book, Starry Messenger: Cosmic Perspectives on Civilization.
Subscribe to the podcast: http://jordanharbinger.com/subscribe
Full show notes can be found here: https://jordanharbinger.com/727
What We Discuss with Neil:
0:00 - Intro
4:25 - How humanity can be less misinformed
24:29 - Neil explains Big Bang proof, space physics, and more
39:26 - Why knowledge grows exponentially
50:38 - How crybaby politicians ruin scientific progress
No small number of folks seem to be under the impression that Neil deGrasse Tyson is a curmudgeon who gleefully relishes the opportunity to shame people when they dispense erroneous “facts” that can be easily disproven by comprehension of basic scientific principles. Rather, he insists, his first instinct as an educator is to educate, not humiliate those of us who offer opinions and hearsay over authentic, verifiable knowledge. As human beings, this is a tendency that seems to permeate our DNA, but it doesn’t mean we can’t strive to do better. Neil’s job is to remind us that learning to distinguish between facts and opinions gives humanity some amount of control over its future rather than being forced to rely solely on the meandering happenstance of evolution.
On this episode, Neil rejoins us to discuss these points and more as chronicled in his latest book, Starry Messenger: Cosmic Perspectives on Civilization. Here, we get into the relief we should feel when some of our most dearly held beliefs are scrutinized and dismantled by scientific literacy, what we can do as responsible citizens to increase our own scientific literacy and capacity for understanding the world around us as it is rather than as we might wish it to be, and how we can help others come to such an understanding as well. Listen, learn, and enjoy!

14:22 - Why serial k*llers take breaks
30:19 - Serial k*llers look like normal dudes
44:09 - Catching the Golden State K*ller
1:04:14 - The psychological toll of thinking like a serial k*ller
More than a third of homicides committed in the US go unsolved. But sometimes new evidence or fresh insight into overlooked clues drag these cold cases out of storage where their secrets can be brought to light and solved, giving long-eluded closure to victims’ families and bringing dangerous, murderous criminals to justice.
On this episode, we’re joined by Paul Holes, a former investigator and author of Unmasked: My Life Solving America’s Cold Cases. Here, we learn how Paul helped solve the decades-cold Golden State Killer case by using advanced DNA identification technology, what the study of cold cases that span vast periods of time has taught us about the lifelong habits of serial killers, common reasons cases go cold and what gets them flagged for reexamination, and the personal toll this world of uncompromising brutality takes on the people like Paul who immerse themselves in it. Bill Nye: 6 Disaster Scenarios That Will End Humanity | JHS Ep. 724
Bill Nye is a lifelong champion of science who is determined to teach you something today that you didn’t know yesterday — whether it’s from a television screen, the pages of a book, or next to you at a dinner party. He can be found hosting his new series, The End Is Nye, on Peacock TV.
Subscribe to the podcast: http://jordanharbinger.com/subscribe
Full show notes can be found here: https://jordanharbinger.com/724
What We Discuss with Bill Nye:
0:00 - Intro
1:25 - How to reinvent yourself
8:18 - How an individual can help save the world
14:40 - 6 disasters that can end humanity
18:29 - Normalcy bias
23:49 - The chances of doomsday (isn't low)
27:27 - Wind turbines can tame a hurricane
33:02 - Invest in fusion energy
36:39 - 3 traits of radical solution-makers
42:35 - Cognitive dissonance in adults
The science is clear: human beings have accelerated the rate of climate change over the past few centuries to the point that cataclysmic consequences are inescapable without appropriate countermeasures. And more bad news: not all potentially civilization-halting catastrophes are manmade. Supervolcanoes, solar flares, and doomsday comets are just a few apocalyptic scenarios that could hasten the demise of humanity — and most life on Earth. So what’s the good news? We’ve got science on our side to help mitigate and survive these disasters should we choose to use it.
On this episode, we’re rejoined by science champion Bill Nye the Science Guy, whose new Peacock TV series — The End Is Nye — takes us through these unfathomably grim doomsdays and demonstrates how we could use science to find our way to the other side of them. Listen, learn, and enjoy!

How Today’s Businesses Failed Their Way To Success | JHS Ep. 721
Jason Feifer is the editor in chief of Entrepreneur magazine, host of the Build for Tomorrow podcast, and author of Build for Tomorrow: An Action Plan for Embracing Change, Adapting Fast, and Future-Proofing Your Career.
Subscribe to the podcast: http://jordanharbinger.com/subscribe
Full show notes can be found here: https://jordanharbinger.com/721
What We Discuss with Jason:
0:00 - Intro
0:06 - How plague positively affects work
8:50 - Crisis is opportunity
12:00 - "9/10 businesses fail" is BS
22:13 - What margarine teaches you about big life changes
30:22 - Books will make kids stupid
40:17 - Adults fail to know what's best for kids
48:23 - How to stay on top of change instead of panicking
58:27 - Defining your skills the right way
1:06:50 - Imposter syndrome makes you a better worker
1:11:00 - Look for the moment of awareness
Predicting the future isn’t an exact science, but one thing is certainly in the cards: the way you’re doing your job today isn’t the way it’s going to be done tomorrow. And rather than resisting the inevitable changes already afoot, knowing how to adapt to these changes is what will ensure your job security and general happiness in the world to come, according to Entrepreneur magazine editor Jason Feifer in his book Build for Tomorrow: An Action Plan for Embracing Change, Adapting Fast, and Future-Proofing Your Career.
On this episode, Jason joins us to discuss what the workers of the world gained when the bubonic plague killed off 60 percent of Medieval Europe (and how our current collective experience with COVID is causing similar workforce upheavals), the pros and cons of the four-day workweek, why failure should be seen as a source of valuable information that informs future steps instead of an ominous dead end sign, what people who parrot the erroneous maxim that “nine out of 10 businesses fail” are leaving out of the equation, and what we can do to take disruptions to the status quo as opportunities to change for the better rather than succumbing to the panic that often accompanies the unknown. Listen, learn, and enjoy!

6:48 - The cliché of "always be learning"
11:18 - Competitive differentiation
18:43 - Hard and soft assets

1:09:43 - Do this 1 day per month
1:11:04 - Why everyone should have an online brand
1:17:25 - Be like George Clooney
If you want to peer inside the mind of someone who’s been through the startup game more than a few times, Reid Hoffman is your guy. He’s a co-founder of LinkedIn, investor at Greylock Partners, and co-author of several books, including Blitzscaling: The Lightning-Fast Path to Building Massively Valuable Companies, Masters of Scale: Surprising Truths from the World’s Most Successful Entrepreneurs, and the fully revised and updated bestseller The Start-Up of You: Adapt to the Future, Invest in Yourself, and Transform Your Career. Appropriately enough, he’s also the host of the Masters of Scale podcast, which explores how the world’s most successful entrepreneurs take their companies from startup level to becoming household names.
But if you’re just trying to carve out a totally normal career for yourself in the working world, why should you care about advice from the perspective of a startup-savvy entrepreneur? Because there’s no such thing as a “totally normal” career anymore. On this episode, Reid rejoins us to discuss what you have to gain by approaching your career as a startup and adopting an entrepreneur’s point of view rather than that of an aspiring employee. Here, you’ll come to understand why adaptability is really the new stability that will ensure job security, and what you can do to become an indispensable asset rather than a disposable cog in the modern machinery of gainful employment. Prof. of International Affairs on Unstable Democracy | JHS Ep. 718
Barbara F. Walter is the Rohr Professor of International Affairs at the School of Global Policy and Strategy at the University of California, San Diego, and the author of the NYT bestseller How Civil Wars Start: And How to Stop Them.
Subscribe to the podcast: http://jordanharbinger.com/subscribe
Full show notes can be found here: https://jordanharbinger.com/718
What We Discuss with Barbara:
0:00 - Intro
0:06 - Are we actually in danger of civil war?
11:08 - The 2 signs of unstable democracies
14:34 - The 2 things that make effective factionalism and tribalism
27:09 - People don't know when they're turning to a faction
34:29 - The wealth gap in America
41:50 - What a 21st century civil war actually looks like
50:59 - Nobody is going to expect the civil war until it happens
55:33 - How poor, uneducated Americans vote against themselves
1:02:40 - Uptick in far right members of US military
At a time when the United States seems to be increasingly disunited by political polarization and calls for violence to “save” the Republic are on the rise, is it reasonable to wonder if we’re on the cusp of a civil war? If so, how would it differ from the one our nation endured in the 19th century? What lessons can civil wars around the globe teach us about the potential for de-escalating our society’s undercurrent of conflict before it comes to a boil and erupts in large-scale violence?
On this episode, we delve into the common factors that precipitate civil wars and what can be done to avert their inevitability with Barbara F. Walter, a UCSD political science professor and author of the NYT bestseller How Civil Wars Start: And How to Stop Them. Here, we discuss which societies are particularly vulnerable to civil war, why some countries survive periods of political instability without experiencing civil war while others seem predisposed to violent upheaval, the case being made by some in the United States for a new civil war, and what those of us committed to avoiding this scenario can do to help correct course. Confronting a CIA Agent on Fake News | Cindy Otis Ep. 715
Cindy Otis is a former CIA military analyst specializing in disinformation threat analysis and counter-messaging, and is the author of True or False: A CIA Analyst’s Guide to Spotting Fake News.
Subscribe to the podcast: http://jordanharbinger.com/subscribe
Full show notes can be found here: https://jordanharbinger.com/715
What We Discuss with Cindy:
0:00 - Intro
0:06 - What exactly is fake news?
6:51 - Jack The Ripper: the first account of fake news
12:58 - How China and Russia exploit influencers
18:38 - Fake news isn't meant to be persuasive
22:02 - How satire is different than fake news
24:33 - The least intelligent, highest emotion people spread fake news
26:55 - How militaries use fake news
33:07 - Why extremists don't want moderates to vote
37:19 - "Confronting a CIA Analyst on FAKE NEWS"
42:56 - The post-truth era
48:17 - Why people can't distinguish fact from opinion
55:30 - How fear is exploited
1:00:52 - How to be more aware of fake news in your feed
Call it whatever you like, but “fake news” isn’t a new invention. It’s been around at least since the ancient world when Pharaoh Ramesses had his allegedly huge victory over the Hittites immortalized in stone (still visible today) in spite of being pretty evenly matched and actually losing territory when it was time to sign the world’s first peace treaty. And it doesn’t matter if you happen to believe the fake news that’s bombarding you daily, as long as it saps your morale for critical thinking and keeps you in a state of perpetual mistrust.
To investigate the evolution of fake news and its weaponization in the age of social media, we’re joined by ex-CIA analyst Cindy Otis, author of True or False: A CIA Analyst’s Guide to Spotting Fake News. Here, we discuss what fake news is and why it’s so quick to take root, how misinformation differs from disinformation, what happens when satire is spread as fact, how people in strange places get rich inventing lies that destabilize democracy, and how we can inoculate ourselves — and our children — against the intended impact of fake news. And no, the irony of dishing over fake news with someone who used to be in the CIA wasn’t lost on either of us! Listen, learn, and enjoy!

Prof. of Nutrition on How Processed Food Makes You Fat | Marion Nestle Ep. 713
Marion Nestle is the Paulette Goddard Professor in the Department of Nutrition, Food Studies, and Public Health at New York University, and the author of Food Politics, Soda Politics, and Unsavory Truth: How Food Companies Skew the Science of What We Eat.

Full show notes can be found here: https://jordanharbinger.com/713
What We Discuss with Marion:
0:00 - Intro
0:06 - Coca Cola's Wikileaks
5:23 - How food companies create scientific biases
11:42 - Your doctors are bribed
19:43 - Food propaganda and fake independent studies
24:20 - How ultra processed foods mess with your hunger
28:43 - Big sugar tried to shut Marion up
31:38 - Lying food headlines (Why you should drink a glass of wine daily)
35:17 - How food company ads outsmart your critical thinking
39:45 - Food company employees are members of government
44:24 - "New scientific discoveries" are simply new marketing tactics
49:17 - How food companies make truthful scientists quiet
51:41 - How to fix our broken food system
When the people who are trying to sell you something sponsor research that concludes the thing being sold will benefit you in a number of ways and you’d be crazy not to buy it, maybe the actual crazy thing is trusting that these people have your best interests at heart and aren’t manipulating information to influence your decisions. Yet food companies — especially in the United States — do this very thing every day.
On this episode, we talk to Marion Nestle, the Paulette Goddard Professor in the Department of Nutrition, Food Studies, and Public Health at New York University, and the author of Food Politics, Soda Politics, and Unsavory Truth: How Food Companies Skew the Science of What We Eat. Here, we get into how pervasive the food industry is in corrupting science to support its own agendas (i.e., making money), how it lobbies Congress to shape policy that makes such manipulation as easy as possible, the damage this causes to the health of our society, and what we can do to spot food industry deception and protect ourselves against it. Listen, learn, and enjoy!

Doctor Explains Why U.S. Medicine Is Dangerous | Dr. John Abramson Ep. 709
Dr. John Abramson is a physician, lecturer of health care policy at Harvard Medical School, and author of Overdosed America: The Broken Promise of American Medicine. His latest book is Sickening: How Big Pharma Broke American Health Care and How We Can Repair It.
Subscribe to the podcast: http://jordanharbinger.com/subscribe
Full show notes can be found here: https://jordanharbinger.com/709
What We Discuss with Dr. John Abramson:
0:00 - Intro
0:06 - The more you spend on healthcare the less healthy you are
6:14 - The insane cost of big pharma advertisements
13:08 - Biotech makes you think "innovation" means better
15:25 - Controlling the congress on both sides
16:45 - Drug companies have hijacked science-based medicine
25:40 - Pharma gets away with killing as many people as the Vietnam War
34:27 - Doctors trusting medical journals can't be trusted
37:06 - Most studies are done by companies, not academics
44:21 - People join systems to help others then get corrupted
52:03 - If doctors can't trust medical journals, what should they do?
55:26 - Understanding anti-vax people (but vaccines are still awesome)
1:03:11 - What do nations with successful healthcare do differently?
1:12:38 - Does capitalism do anything well for healthcare?
1:14:10 - America's system is only getting worse
1:18:38 - The solution is to take health into your own hands
Despite the fact that the US spends more on healthcare than other nations — both on a per-capita basis and relative to its wealth — the amount of time Americans live in good health ranks a dismal 68th in the world. And while it may seem like we’re drifting into wingnut territory by blaming it on popular conspiracy scapegoat “Big Pharma,” the pharmaceutical industry’s overweighted influence in the halls of American policy is well-documented. It’s no exaggeration to say that securing record profits for its shareholders is Big Pharma’s primary goal. Anything else — including the health of the very people who depend on its products — is secondary.
On this episode, we’re joined by Dr. John Abramson, author of Overdosed America: The Broken Promise of American Medicine and Sickening: How Big Pharma Broke American Health Care and How We Can Repair It. Here, John explains why Big Pharma has such a stranglehold on the way healthcare works (or, more accurately, doesn’t work) for the American public, the consequences of allowing such an amoral behemoth to run slipshod over the welfare of the people it’s supposed to serve, and what can be done to heal the hurt it’s caused over the course of decades. Listen, learn, and enjoy!

What We Discuss with Johann:
0:00 - Intro

5:55 - Switching tasks every 60 seconds
9:06 - Attention span is like mud on a windshield
15:37 - Individual vs collective attention explained
33:19 - Beating distractions offensively and defensively
38:14 - You're interrupting yourself (why you keep task switching)
50:51 - How much sleep impacts focus & how to fix it
1:05:12 - Technology isn't the problem, it's the business model
1:13:04 - Johann gives words of hope
The human brain can only really pay attention to one thing at a time, which makes finding focus in a world that’s constantly bombarding you with information—from every angle—nearly impossible. But it’s not your fault. Your inability to focus isn’t a personal failure; your focus has been stolen from you by powerful external forces that have left all of us uniquely vulnerable to corporations determined to raid our attention for profit. On an individual level, this can disrupt our ability to learn complex skills and achieve lives of purpose. On a societal level, this can keep us from achieving collective goals that benefit humanity.
It’s a real problem. But is there a real solution?
On this episode, we’re joined by Johann Hari, author of Stolen Focus: Why You Can’t Pay Attention—And How to Think Deeply Again. Here, we discuss what’s really robbing us of our attention and what Johann learned about reclaiming it on a trip that took him around the world. Listen, learn, and enjoy!

0:00 - Intro

7:35 - The Kiss up/Kick down
20:59 - BEATING the kiss up/kick down

48:23 - The Micromanager
54:53 - BEATING the micromanager
1:00:49 - Reviewing all 7 types of jerks and how to deal with them
No matter what we do for a living, we’ve all met our fair share of jerks at work. And, if we’re being completely honest, we’ve probably all been jerks at work from someone’s perspective. As Tessa West, a New York University social psychology professor and author of Jerks at Work: Toxic Coworkers and What to Do About Them says, “Jerk, I think, is really just a loose word to describe that you’re doing something to piss somebody off, and you might not even mean to be doing it. You might actually be hurting someone while helping another person.”
In this episode, we’re not learning to identify and deal with the seven types of jerks at work as a way to shame them into obscurity. We’re learning to identify and deal with the seven types of jerks at work as a way to coexist with this inevitable ingredient of any group dynamic without becoming jerks at work ourselves. Listen, learn, and enjoy!

On this episode, Dr. Benjamin Hardy revisits the show to discuss what you can do to become the person you aspire to be today without wasting time in some kind of self-imposed limbo as outlined in his latest book, Be Your Future Self Now: The Science of Intentional Transformation. Here, we’ll discuss the challenges that may be keeping you disconnected from this future self, and what you can do to make decisions that guide you toward that person instead of away from them. Confessions of Mexico's Most Violent Cartels (Part 2) | Ioan Grillo Ep. 701
Ioan Grillo is a contributing writer at The New York Times specializing in crime and drugs. He is the author of El Narco: Inside Mexico’s Criminal Insurgency; Gangster Warlords: Drug Dollars, Killing Fields, and the New Politics of Latin America; and Blood Gun Money: How America Arms Gangs and Cartels. (This is part 2 of a 2 part episode)

Full show notes can be found here: https://jordanharbinger.com/701
What We Discuss with Ioan:
0:00 - Intro
0:06 - Ioan needs Jordan's lawyer skills
10:13 - The Iron River: Firearms in the US moved to Mexico
19:11 - Are all firearms used by cartels?
28:04 - The firearms trade isn't strategic
33:32 - Why we can't digitally trace firearms
39:21 - Operation Fast and Furious (not the movie)
44:22 - Firearms vs police: checks and balances

56:22 - The journey of an illegal firearm
1:02:41 - Why it's so difficult to regulate firearms
1:07:51 - 3D printed firearms
Mexican cartels are infamous for their ruthlessness in carving out whatever piece of the $300 billion annual illicit drug trade they can. This means waging war against one another, as well as terrorizing the populace unlucky enough to call a contested town home. The police can’t be trusted to serve and protect them because, if they’re not on the take from the cartels, they’re certainly outgunned by them. Thousands of innocent people disappear every year as pawns in whatever games the cartels decide to play — children often recruited to carry out the bloodiest, most gruesome work while their parents and relatives wind up in mass graves.
For 20 years, journalist Ioan Grillo has been immersed in this world of nonstop cruelty and chaos, resulting in two books: El Narco: Inside Mexico’s Criminal Insurgency and Gangster Warlords: Drug Dollars, Killing Fields, and the New Politics of Latin America (we’ll get more into his third and most recent, Blood Gun Money: How America Arms Gangs and Cartels, in the second part of this two-part episode later this week). Here, Ioan shares the horrors he’s witnessed over the past two decades and tries to make sense of it all while retaining his own humanity.

How To Tell If You're Being Lied To | Malcolm Gladwell Ep. 695
Malcolm Gladwell has written multiple bestsellers that are probably on your shelf right now, including The Tipping Point, Blink, Outliers, What the Dog Saw, and Talking to Strangers. His latest book is The Bomber Mafia: A Dream, a Temptation, and the Longest Night of the Second World War, and his Revisionist History podcast has just reached its seventh season.
Subscribe to the podcast: http://jordanharbinger.com/subscribe
Full show notes can be found here: https://jordanharbinger.com/695
What We Discuss with Malcolm:
0:00 - Intro
0:06 - Why you suck at detecting lies
8:53 - Why we rationalize bad behavior
15:41 - What the Johnny Depp trial reveals about humans
20:07 - Mismatched people and how that makes them seem suspicious
26:54 - Why white cops think black suspects are more suspicious
28:54 - How to get accurate reads on people
32:15 - What to look for in first impressions
38:32 - The decline of trust in all institutions
42:02 - How Malcolm picks things to study
46:19 - Storytelling is like a jigsaw puzzle
54:57 - Malcolm took a spiral dive just so he could write about it
59:25 - Would life be easier if you didn't think as much?
1:02:59 - Why Malcolm never lets anyone change his titles
Ever feel like you’re someone who trusts too easily and winds up as an easy mark for the world’s most wicked deceivers? Don’t be so hard on yourself. It turns out we’re all actually pretty lousy lie detectors, and even people who do it for a living (like FBI agents, mobsters, and high school principals) get suckered just like the rest of us. Part of it is the evolutionary advantage to trusting others that’s ingrained in all of us. Part of it is the fact that most people aren’t lying to you most of the time. And part of it is that a lot of us have demeanors that are mismatched with how we’re expected to behave in certain circumstances — which may contribute to you thinking you’re being lied to when you’re actually not.
On this episode, we’re rejoined by Malcolm Gladwell, the bestselling author of The Tipping Point, Blink, Outliers, What the Dog Saw, and Talking to Strangers, and The Bomber Mafia: A Dream, a Temptation, and the Longest Night of the Second World War (to name just a few) and host of the Revisionist History podcast to discuss what makes us susceptible to being hoodwinked and what we can do to more honestly appraise how people present themselves. We also get into how Malcolm decides what to explore and study for his next book or podcast, why he finds storytelling that assembles an imperfect puzzle to be more satisfying than a neat, flawless conclusion, and much more. Listen, learn, and enjoy!

0:06 - Studying gender in chimpanzees
9:15 - Nature vs nurture in gender
13:25 - The beauty of genitalia makes Carole cry
18:31 - Why Jordan's empathy has shot up with decreased testosterone
20:48 - How testosterone impacts early development
24:29 - How testosterone in fetuses affects mothers & twins
31:40 - Defining gender differences through transpeople
40:25 - How cutting off men's genitals affects behavior (eunuchs)

55:17 - The unfortunate truth of children and gender dysphoria
1:01:43 - Carole isn't afraid to say the truth in the heart of cancel culture
1:04:00 - Why scientists are incentivized to lie
1:12:29 - Getting a biologist to define toxic masculinity
1:19:23 - Why Carole thinks (some) transpeople dislike her
1:22:45 - Why Harvard turned it's back on Carole
For better or worse, testosterone can be attributed to behaviors that civilization has come to recognize as “masculine” — that is, a penchant for physical violence, a thirst for power, and a desire for sex with as many partners as possible. Elevated testosterone can give the edge to males — whether they’re chimpanzees or spiny lizards or humans — who seek to compete with (and out-reproduce) their rivals. And losing the source of most testosterone (the testicles) vastly reverses behavior to make the subject less competitive and more passive — just ask any eunuch or opera-singing castrato.
Most concur that there are differences between sexes in human behavior, although they disagree on the causes. The research, however, is unequivocal: testosterone is a strong factor in human civilization that separates the sexes physically and behaviorally. However, as our guest Dr. Carole Hooven demonstrates in her book T: The Story of Testosterone, the Hormone that Dominates and Divides Us, this results in a wide range of male and female behavior when combined with genes and culture. Furthermore, the fact that many sex differences have biological roots does not justify rigid gender norms or patriarchal attitudes. Understanding testosterone helps us better understand ourselves, one another, and how to create a society that is more fair and secure. Listen, learn, and enjoy!

In his 1970 book Future Shock, Alvin Toffler told us, “in dealing with the future … it is more important to be imaginative and insightful than to be 100 percent right.” That is, we may not be able to predict the future with unfailing accuracy, but we can anticipate potential problems and imagine numerous ways to solve them before they arrive. “There are going to be surprises. There are going to be unanticipated consequences. But if you’re thinking in this more flexible, more resilient way, it doesn’t really matter what the specifics of the change, disruption, or crisis are, because you’ve been preparing yourself mentally to be agile, adaptable, flexible, and resilient,” says Jane McGonigal, returning guest and author of Imaginable: How to See the Future Coming and Feel Ready for Anything ― Even Things That Seem Impossible Today.
On this episode, Jane joins us to discuss how we can wrap our minds around an uncertain future and develop the ability to be prepared for whatever comes our way. Here, we examine ways to imagine our way out of possible future problems without becoming too wrapped up in doom and gloom, learn how to train ourselves to spot signals of change that give us an edge on foresight, and put a few practicals in our toolkit that allow us to really get a glimpse into how weird and wonderful the future could be — and find our place in it. Listen, learn, and enjoy!
