Study Description:
In this week's study, we see the Pharisees question Jesus about his disciples, not "ceremonially" washing their hands. We see Jesus confronted by a Caananite woman wanting healing for her daughter and we see Jesus feed a group of 4,000 gentiles (estimated 10,000 or more in total). The theme that we hit on, and that Dave argues is the key thing Christ is looking for; "where is your heart at?"

Study Description:
In today's Bible Study we look at Matthew chapter 12 and Jesus' harsh words for the Pharisees, (a religious group that thought they were "right with God" because of all the rules they followed). Specifically, we see Jesus point out that it is out of the abundance of the heart that the mouth speaks. We can learn a great deal from Jesus' strong words for the Pharisees of that day when applying them to our lives today.

58:26 - Ephesians 6;10-18, “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 01:44 - Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:
“Hansen’s disease (also known as leprosy) is an infection caused by slow-growing bacteria called Mycobacterium leprae. It can affect the nerves, skin, eyes, and lining of the nose (nasal mucosa). With early diagnosis and treatment, the disease can be cured. People with Hansen’s disease can continue to work and lead an active life during and after treatment.
Leprosy was once feared as a highly contagious and devastating disease, but now we know it doesn’t spread easily and treatment is very effective. However, if left untreated, the nerve damage can result in crippling of hands and feet, paralysis, and blindness.”
Better for a man not to marry: 1 Corinthians 7;1-8, “It is good for a man not to have sexual relations with a woman. But since sexual immorality is occurring, each man should have sexual relations with his own wife, and each woman with her own husband. The husband should fulfill his marital duty to his wife, and likewise the wife to her husband. The wife does not have authority over her own body but yields it to her husband. In the same way, the husband does not have authority over his own body but yields it to his wife. Do not deprive each other except perhaps by mutual consent and for a time, so that you may devote yourselves to prayer. Then come together again so that Satan will not tempt you because of your lack of self-control. I say this as a concession, not as a command. I wish that all of you were as I am. But each of you has your own gift from God; one has this gift, another has that. Now to the unmarried and the widows I say: It is good for them to stay unmarried, as I do. But if they cannot control themselves, they should marry, for it is better to marry than to burn with passion.
23:18 Isaiah 53;4. "Surely he took up our pain and bore our suffering, yet we considered him punished by God, stricken by him, and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds, we are healed. We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all."

Description:
In this weeks video we finish up the sermon on the mount, looking at Matthew Chapter 7 in which Jesus talks about:
- Passing Judgment on Others
- Asking God for things
- The Path to God/Heaven
- False Prophets
- False Disciples
- Building a Solid Foundation
References / Bibliography:
03:55 - Romans 2;1-5 “You, therefore, have no excuse, you who pass judgment on someone else, for at whatever point you judge another, you are condemning yourself, because you who pass judgment do the same things. Now we know that God’s judgment against those who do such things is based on truth. So when you, a mere human being, pass judgment on them and yet do the same things, do you think you will escape God’s judgment? Or do you show contempt for the riches of his kindness, forbearance and patience, not realizing that God’s kindness is intended to lead you to repentance?”
14:46 - Matthew 7;6 “Do not give dogs what is sacred; do not throw your pearls to pigs. If you do, they may trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces.”
21:09 - 1 Peter 3;15, “Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect”
22:01 - Matthew 7;7-11 “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. Or what man is there among you who, when his son asks for a loaf, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, he will not give him a snake, will he? If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give what is good to those who ask Him!”
24:58 - Matthew 07;13-14 “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow is the road that leads to life and only a few find it.”
25:35 - John 10;07-10 “Jesus said to them again, Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. All who came before Me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not hear them. I am the door; if anyone enters through Me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.”
29:00 - False Prophets - Prosperity Now, Word of Faith Movement?
“The prosperity gospel (also known as the “health and wealth gospel” or by its most popular brand, the “Word of Faith” movement) is a perversion of the gospel of Jesus that claims that God rewards increases in faith with increases in health and/or wealth… In short, this means that “health and wealth” are the automatic divine right of all Bible-believing Christians and may be procreated by faith as part of the package of salvation, since the Atonement of Christ includes not just the removal of sin, but also the removal of sickness and poverty.”

If anyone builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw their work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each person’s work. If what has been built survives, the builder will receive a reward. If it is burned up, the builder will suffer loss but yet will be saved - even though only as one escaping through the flames.”

Blessed are those who wash their robes, that they may have the right to the tree of life and may go through the gates into the city. Outside are the dogs, those who practice magic arts, the sexually immoral, the murderers, the idolaters and everyone who love and practices falsehood. I, Jesus, have sent my angel to give you this testimony for the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, and the bright Morning Star.”
36:30 - Revelation 20;11-15 (Great White Throne Judgment,) “Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. The earth and the heavens fled from his presence, and there was no place for them. And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books. The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what they had done. Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death. Anyone whose name was not found written in the book of life was thrown into the lake of fire.”

Description:
In this week's Bible Study, Dave goes through the first half of Matthew chapter 6. Continuing in Jesus' Sermon on the Mount, we look at what Jesus has to say about Giving, Praying, and Fasting.
References:
08:44 - Matt 05;17 - “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished."
09:20 - Leviticus 27;30: “A tithe of everything from the land, whether grain from the soil or fruit from the trees, belongs to the Lord; it is holy to the Lord”
09:38 - Proverbs 03;09 “Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops”
13:48 - Matthew 25;14-30 Parable of the talents (bags of gold)
18:38 - Luke 16;10 “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much”
22:50 - Philippians 04;06-07 “do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
23:13 - Celebration of Discipline by Richard Foster
23:45 - “To Pray is to Change. Prayer is the central Avenue God uses to transform us. If we are unwilling to change, we will abandon prayer as a noticeable characteristic of our lives. The closer we come to the heartbeat of God the more we see our need and the more we desire to be conformed to Christ.” (Richard Foster - Celebration of Discipline)
32:58 - God’s Chosen Fast by Arthur Wallis
36:25 - “Scripture has so much to say about fasting that we would do well to look once again at this ancient discipline. The list of biblical personages who fasted reads like a “who’s who” of the Bible: Moses, King David, the prophet Elijah, the apostle Paul, and of course Jesus. Many of the great Christians throughout church history fasted and witnessed to its value; among them were Martin Luther, John Calvin, John Knox, John Wesley, Jonathan Edwards, David Brainerd and Charles Finnery.”
(Richard Foster - Celebration of Discipline)
37:07 “The constant propaganda fed us today convinces us that if we do not have three large meals each day, with several snacks in between, we are on the verge of starvation. This coupled with the popular belief that it is a positive virtue to satisfy every human appetite, has made fasting seem obsolete.”
(Richard Foster - Celebration of Discipline)
43:48 - Partial Fast - Daniel 10;03, “I ate no delicacies, no meat or wine entered my mouth.”
44:31 - Absolute fast - Acts 09;09, “For three days he neither ate nor drank.”

This is the first in a weekly video bible study that Dave Bigler is doing on the book of Matthew. He intros the video with an explanation of who he is and why he is doing the study. He then goes into a quick explanation of the old testament and its foundation for the new testament. Dave then does a brief explanation of who the apostle Matthew is as the book's author and why Matthew is writing the book. After the intros, Dave digs into the genealogy found in Mat 01;01-17 pulling out why Matthew chooses to start his gospel with such a dry opening. Dave closes the study with two crazy elements that show God's "divine thumbprint" on his bible.
