Women don't have a monopoly on dangerous fashion trends. Edwardian men also sacrificed their health for the sake of wearing popular stiff collars. The collars were detachable, so they could be worn with different shirts, making them practical. But they also were so stiff that they choked numerous men when they fell asleep wearing them. As they dozed off, their head fell forward and the collar's rigid material blocked their windpipe. Other men also choked on their food when their collar was too tight. The term eugenics is basically a set of beliefs and practices that aim to improve the genetic quality of a human population, historically by excluding people and groups judged to be inferior. But the Germans did not invent eugenics. In fact they were inspired by the founder of the taxpayer funded Planned Parenthood, Margaret Sanger. On May 20th 1947, The body of 22 year old Christina Kettlewell was found 150 feet from her honeymoon cottage, drown in only 9 inches of water. An inquest into her death unravelled a confounding tale of elopement, life insurance policies, suicide letters, and an attempted murder. At the turn-of-the-century in Oswego New York, tragedy struck the Tonkin family,. As whispers about a disturbing incident began to circulate - the family’s response sent shockwaves through the community. Today’s story takes place in October 1899 in Oswego New York, where one of the wealthiest families in the area - The Tonkin Family experienced the tragic loss of their 11 year old daughter, who passed away suddenly from appendicitis. Despite the fact that this family could afford all the best doctors, they were unable to save sweet Virginia. Shocked and overwhelmed with grief, the Tonkins placed Virginia's body in a hermetically sealed, (basically airtight) glass-topped coffin. They held the viewing in the library of the house, and then afterward moved the fairy tale coffin into her old bedroom, until that they could build a family mausoleum in a nearby cemetery. But as the months went by people began to notice that Virginia was never moved and it appeared as though the family was continuing to hold nightly vigils in Virginia's room. This began to attract tabloid attention and gossip began spreading like wildfire.
